Whats Going on in Christchurch, New Zealand?

There was a really good story on the news last night about a couple who were able to have their wedding. As I recall she was either in or near one of the buildings that collapsed. They had their wedding yesterday. Really cute couple.

At Christchurch there's only some "symptoms" !

It will be "delivered" at lake Vostok at the south pole , when "the water brakes" !

seriously speaking , there's a book about this , some say it's science fiction , but several SF books have become reality lately...

Need to ask you a question.....

Did you or anyone else living in CHCH see any strange rainbow colours and/or weird clouds in the skies days or hours before both earthquakes?

No , not that i know of. I've read lots about various things seen before quakes though.

some spoke of sulphur smells, but its not uncommon for sulphur smells in christchurch, even though I didn't smeel any preceding the quake.

The only thing that warned me was my cat. she was acting strange for days before hand and i even said to my wife for a joke, "maybe theres gonna be another big quake".

I'll know next time!!

Post 22 Feb shows quite a different spread of activity to pre 22 Feb. There appears to be little to no aftershocks related to the first quake now - they all appear clustered around the second, - I suppose that is to be expected, and of course it hasn't been a week yet.

I wonder what the seismologists are speculating - you know, their own thoughts - not what they choose to publicly express. I imagine their profession is one which you'd have to be very guarded about what fears, concerns, or theories you publicly hold.

I keep checking the news sites a few times a day (and this thread of course) but I really don't know what I'm looking to hear or read of. I feel it is important to know what's happening to Chch and to NZ, and yet I guess it's hard to know when I cross over into just being morbid for the sake of it. As the ancients wrote "Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied, Nor are the eyes of man ever satisfied." When is enough information, emotion, shared experience enough?

Being a New Zealander living in Aus, it is very heart wrenching to see the situation unfolding in Christchurch.

One story that got me is about the guy who predicted the earthquake a few weeks before it happened.

Being a geologist myself i find the concept of earthquake prediction very interesting. More study is needed on this phenomenon.

thanks for your input,

i did hear an interview a few days ago and a Scientist did say on TV that after last Septembers 7.1 quake, this had put a huge amount of pressure elsewhere, although they couldn't pinpoint exactly where due to them not knowing where all these unseen fault lines lie.

This turned out to be the 22nd Feb Quake that had took the pressure from the Sep 2010 quake.

He then went on to say that there would now be a pressure build up somewhere else due to this latest quake and that's what they are quickly trying to determine, where.....

Hopefully they can give us a rough idea, but im not getting my hopes up just yet.

New Zealand's 9/11: Christchurch 2011

We saw how in the US in particular the murder of close to 3000 people in New York was seized by Washington to pass through the senate laws which have since that day stripped Americans of their constitutional rights, and shredded the Constitution itself.

Well, the similar steps have been taken to initiate just that outcome in NZ following the first earthquake. It is likely the second earthquake having wrought massive devastation not only the the largest city in the South Island but to the country's economy, will provide the reason for Wellington to accelerate the process.

Following the first earthquake in September 2010 the NZ government unanimously passed the the Canterbury Earthquake Response and Recovery Act (CERRA). This law concentrates wide powers in the hands of government ministers and unelected advisors allowing them to override most of the laws in NZ. Public debate is simply ruled out.

Late last year leading academics voiced their dismay in a public petition. I can't locate a copy at this moment but instead link to this online news site with its own copy and a story.

Further to this, leading NZ rightwing commentators are now urging the government to intensify austerity measures, including reviewing tax cuts and interest free student loans and working family tax credits. The last one falling under welfare which has in any event is likely to be stripped to the bones with the austerity measures already in place.

On the Gini index, which measures the disparity between wealth and poverty of a country NZ is already well up there just below the US. Tunisia has less of a disparity according to the list and we know what has happened there over the past month.
