Much of the buildings that were severely damaged in CHCH's 2nd earthquake were either damaged from the 1st earthquake back in Sept, old and unstrengthened or new with very little strengthed appropriately to cut costs.

Wellington would be a nightmare because there are just so many more buildings (600x) that are yet to be strengthened while costs have been cut too in who knows how many other buildings....

There were probably some old heritage buildings that were weakened by last Septembers quake, but many buildings were just knocked down by a severe sideways thrust that this earthquake caused.

all central buildings were inspected for structural damage after last sep quake.

I think the rebuilding will cost a massive amount of money bacuase buildings will have to be built to withstand this type of shaking. It was never expected here, therefore the buildings, even though were built well, were not capable of withstanding such movements.

I think we should expect earthquakes in areas around the world that would never had been expected in the first place.

Only some days ago there was one almost in the heart of Australia at around a 4.2 and I did'nt even know about it.

Based on the track of things since Sept 2010 I would suggest the next big one might be out in Pegusus Bay or maybe further north towards Kaikoura way.
I sure hope not, because that means Tsunami

That just causes more concern as the quakes seem centred where the two volcanoes seem to overlap..Im ignoring the Mega volcanoe out to sea.The Sulphur smell reported must mean that their are volcanic vents around the place.

Actually sulphur smell doesn't automatically mean volcanism. There are many possible reasons for smelling hydrogen sulphide. It's common in ground water. We can smell it here in Hawkes Bay NZ from particular bores when water sits in the pipes too long and/or in areas where pipes are too close to the surface and warm up. And of course as stated on wikipedia, "It often results from the bacterial breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen, such as in swamps and sewers (anaerobic digestion)."

gidday bluemirage5 - my apologies that I've offended you. Honestly, if the OP grantbeed feels that particular post is too off track for this thread, I'm happy to delete it.

However I thought the content was relevant - and related to a question/suggestion by another poster CosmicCitizen. And if you look back over the thread, you'll see that I made several other contributions, and not one of them a 'rant'.

I didn't even say if I agreed with the content on the links that have offended you - but that if the question was this a "symbolic attack on "Christ's Church?" was of interest, then have a look at the links and prophetic stuff. There is a substantial number of people who believe there is some significance with the city's name and symbolism with current events, and the number of posts on the links establish that, and felt that may be of benefit to CosmicCitizen and perhaps some other ATSers.

Oh, also, I really didn't think I denied anything. Perhaps you misread something I typed?

Now, if I'd said that there was some related Mayan prophecy, would you have reacted as you did? Have I really stepped that far outside the spirit of ATS?? Like I say, I'm happy to delete the links etc depending on what the OP thinks - what do you think grantbeed?

I clicked on to a couple of your links and all i got was some religious rant....much of it was misinterpretations and none of it made any sense.

Basically all it said is if the people of CHCH did'nt accept the word of Jesus then they are going to pay a price of more quakes. Try telling that to the families of their loved ones who perished in the quake. Churches and buildings are just bricks and mortar that can be put together once again, people's lives - when they're gone, they're gone and they are not coming back.

People lost their lives because of mother nature and because owners of some of those buildings wanted to cut costs because they either could'nt afford to enforce their buildings or wanted to make as much profit as they could.

Apart from the psycological scarring, I am doing fine here, thanks for asking. Very lucky as I was at work when it happened, just 5mins from the CBD.

Scarier than last Septembers 7.1 thats for sure!!

It just goes to show how precious life is and how easily and quickly it can be taken away. Live life for the moment!

Gidday. I'll reply to your last comment with a private message, as I don't want to go too off-track with this thread. I find it interesting however that you use the term mother nature; 'she' appears to be rather precocious and angry at times.

The irony is that when I lived in Christchurch, I found the people there to be of higher moral calibre than for anywhere else I have ever lived. So if God's judgment is a component of what's been happening, then the rest of us are surely in the deepest of trouble!

Like I say, I was just posting links I had come across that I thought addressed a question/suggestion. If the OP thinks that's inappropriate, I'll delete the post asap.
