There are two new pieces of information that are floating around. One is that the Vatican has requested time for the media for Tuesday, and the other is this:

This will be leaking out bit by bit starting tomorrow at 2pm. The object is at a great distance. It comprises of 3 mind bogglingly powerful Fermium laser beams that form a huge glowing triangle in space. It is estimated the distance between points is roughly the size of our Solar system. This is of course not a natural formation in space. Only until Chandra could they detect the properties of this beam, it is unlike any technology we have on Earth. Even more incredible is the triangle pulsates and top scientists the world over are trying to make sense of the obvious data these pulsations represent. Hold on tight, tomorrow everything changes.

Both of these are from a site banned on ATS, so take it for what you will. I'm currently viewing this as nothing more than entertainment since there is a less than 1% chance of it actually happening.

If they want to retain their credibility, they might have to.

At the moment, it may only be visible with their high powered x-ray telescope, but if it is going to get close enough for the amateur astronomer to see, I think they would like to be the first to tell the public.

I'm very interested in the term "exceptional object". If it's a normal object for space of any kind, I will certainly be disappointed.

"NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has observed an unusual galaxy cluster that contains a bright core of relatively cool gas surrounding a quasar called 3C 186. This is the most distant such object yet observed, and could provide insight into the triggering of quasars and the growth of galaxy clusters"

www.nasa.gov...

That link is coming up with an error here, but I hope to god that's not it.

I don't know if they would refer to a galaxy as an "object", since it is made up of many. Let alone calling it "exceptional".

It might me exceptional for space buffs that know their stuff, but for the rest of us that would just be plain boring.

Now THAT would be news!
I think out of all of the strange speculation, the 3 laserbeams is the coolest one yet. Doubt thats what it is, but the thought makes my imagination go off on a tangent.

Sooner or later they are going to find stuff like that out there.....

Hmm. The Chandra blog is down, getting database error (link to blog is on lefthand side of page) - this doesn't mean anything necessarily, databases screw up sometimes or get overloaded. So don't go thinking there is a conspiracy since the site is down. Still no update from Mr. Perrotto guys.

yeah its fkin random galaxy, get over it and stop sensationalising the title. As if that Nutron star is no more spectacular than life on a planet or black hole.

To the OP, ur main point of creating this thread with tat fantasic title was to draw people who are none the wiser and that dont understand one galaxy from the next.... yawn next boring thread please. Oh wait there are plenty going around at the moment, ATS is turning to sht!!

it's almost 2 oclock man, go to bed. you sound angry.

why would NASA call a galaxy an "exceptional object" and hold a press conference over it?

You have no more of a clue than anyone else as to what NASA is gonna announce. I personally love the speculation, it keeps my imagination going.

I dunno why you gotta troll the thread, but whatever man, more power to ya.

I can't wait to see what they found, even if it is something as "boring" as a new kind of galaxy...to me thats not boring at all.

That's far too good to be true, I'd probably s*it my pants if that were the case.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed but I doubt it. Then again, what better way to "disclose" alien life than to say, "oh, look, we wandered across this billions of light years from us--it's proof". Government doesn't have to answer questions about past sightings, can still deny any evidence of a cover up, and now will have the obvious backing of the American public in investigating this. I also thinking the existence of something like this billions of light years away--effectively taking away from any sort of "danger" (notice the quotes) of intelligent life forms in our own solar system, would be useful for TPTB because this isn't close enough to harm us-or even close enough to communicate with us. I tend to think that if NASA announced proof of a Mars civilization, some people would take it as proof that we will eventually go extinct too, and there would be too many questions of a NASA coverup of the Cydonia region.

Great post. I think many people on these boards get so obsessed with finding proof of ET life that they forget how truly awesome and unknown space is--I don't think any new discovery in space could truly be considered "boring". There is so much more we don't know, and just because there may be no proof of alien life tomorrow doesn't mean that this discovery isn't extremely exciting. Who knows what it could teach us about the laws of physics, space, where we came from, or where we're going to.

I won't be disappointed either way. Understanding the universe is key to our survival as a species--because if we don't get out there, we WILL die, no matter if we're alone out here or not.

remove the "." stuck on the end of your link. should work then.

I will be willing to bet, based on the fact that all three scientists available for questions are astrophysicists, and the fact that Chandra deals with X-Ray images, that what NASA has found is either a binary pulsar, a black hole, or a magnetar.

Try taking the period off of the end of "index.html". It's fine.

i see alot of misinformed posts in this thread.

The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is a gamma ray telescope it sees gamma rays, it is the telescope that has seen the huge bubbles in the center of the galaxy, that is not what is going to be discussed in this press conferance.

Chandra is an X-ray telescope so if it has discovered a "exceptional object in our cosmic neighborhood" it will be something that can be seen with an x-ray telescope.

i really think this is being highly over sensationalized without degrading the awesomeness that is space and the wonders that are in it, this will most likely be nothing of consequence or value to earth or those of us whom live here.

IMO.

yeah, people are sensationalizing this. I posted this topic and its title using NASA's own words, and explicitly left out speculation on anything ET-related. This was posted in Space Exploration, not Aliens/UFOs! Thanks to all who are working to keep things sane.

Well, now that I've championed "sanity", here's a rumor:
Obama will appear and answer questions or at least be present for this conference. OMG ALIENS!!!

Nah. Black hole/brown dwarf methinks.

What in the 7 months you've been a member, the great thing about ATS is that it's not compulsory, you can leave any time you want to, try physorg might be more up your street, if you change your mac and ip addresses you may be able to get back on there.
