This is bugging me, I'm ashamedly impatient..

I've got my money on a Neutron Star.

Let wait and see

I cannot make a new thread because I am fairly new, but there is something going on in the sky southeast of where I live, which is upstate NY. I apologize for posting a reply about this here but I have never seen a UFO or anything out of the ordinary in the night sky until now. Looks very similar to a star but it is pulsating red, green and yellow lights. The object is very far off in the distance and looks almost like a star. I have dialed in on it with my telescope and it is defiantly not atmospheric interference causing the color, there is something there!

I saw the same thing a few nights back in the UK.

I see them all the time here in Chile...wonder what they are.

I too have seen this in the UK, looking East across the North Sea...Never seen a star pulse these colours before and no other star in the sky does it...even the ones close to it.

Fear not the Phage friends! He obviously gets his jollies off by giving some ATS members, those whom are sometimes slightly less educated in certain matters, a smack down of knowledge from time to time. What he didn't do was try to educate you as to what you are observing. So I'll try...

Sirius, otherwise known as Σείριος Seirios (Greek for "scorcher"), is a close neighbour of ours. A binary star system with two bodies: Sirius A & B, which is 8.6 light years from the Earth. It is 200 to 300 million years old, and it's absolute magnitude (a celestial object's brightness) is 1.42, 25 times brighter than our sun, but take into the account that it is twice as massive as our Sun. It is currently a white dwarf, coming into this state roughly 120 million years ago.

Sirius's beautiful show of flashing colour changes and oscillations are due to the slight dispersion of the normal terrestrial ray curvature, so that the rays from the star travel along slightly different paths in the atmosphere, according to their colour. Atmospheric turbulence enhances the colour changes even more-so. Colour changes never occur, apparently, at altitudes of more than 50°, but frequently below 35°. Sirius has the most beautiful scintillation, which is visible in the winter months rather low in the sky.

I hope I could help you get started in understanding the awesome stellar display some of you are questioning.

Happy stargazing ATS!

This is it guys

"NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has observed an unusual galaxy cluster that contains a bright core of relatively cool gas surrounding a quasar called 3C 186. This is the most distant such object yet observed, and could provide insight into the triggering of quasars and the growth of galaxy clusters"

Frankly i'm very uneasy about disagreeing with you Phage, since you always seem to know your stuff. So alow me to hedge my bets, please: I'm sure you're absolutely right about Sirius looking this way. However, i've been looking at this part of the sky almost every night, for 10 years now (it's view from my living room), and have never seen this 'Sirius-alike' before.

Not saying that this means it's not Sirius, but can you or anyone explain why it has only now become visible to my naked eye?

I humbly look forward to being put straight, as i'm sure a good explanation will be forthcoming

Just speculating here but could this exceptional object possibly be the object described and mentioned that the Chinese have now found on the moon that NASA are also aware of?

It would make sense for NASA to release the information that "they" wanted us to hear about it instead of China probably telling the world the "truth" of the object.

I very much doubt its some gas formation, or comet or something along thos lines because these arent really exceptional. The word exceptional is a word used to describe something important in my opinion!!!

Same thought occurred to me too.

" whats causing it..." ....thats the words you need to read..

Makes it sound more like a process/phenomenon, than an object -- the effect of something, cause unknown.

Sounds fascinating

But I'm going to hold my breath on this one. NASA has a knack of promising a great big chocolate cake and showing up with brownies. I suppose they have to have these press conferences every now and then to show they are actually doing something.

A simple search of scientific publications shows the areas of expertise of the two research scientists named in the press release:
Kimberly Weaver specializes in x-ray emitting gas in nebulae and Alex Filippenko's work focuses on supernovae.

I'm not your exalted Phage, but it's probably due to your lack of observation.

Also the fact that this scintillation is more extreme in Fall/Winter, but please trust in the fact that Sirius has always been there and put on this display.

Something is out there, something has happened and something has caused it to happen.

Another moon, a new astroid belt, a birth of a new star ...who knows....might be something really realy dull too.

Yeah I agree about what you are saying when you refer to "What's causing it".

These gamma rays, could they be what they are talking about?

Something is out there = Gamma Ray Bubbles
Something has happened = GRB turning into a Traversable wormhole
Something has caused it to happen = (?) Maybe the dawning of the Age of Aquarius? Maybe each cycle, something happens to the blackhole at the center of our galaxy?

I hope its not something dull, if it is I hope MSM and the communities around the world flame NASA for being n00bs.

All I know is that I can't wait until 1730 GMT on Monday.

I think it is possibly a black hole forming that has just appeared due to some sort of event in the milky way (possibly that happened millions of years ago) - the event has not been seen before due to us previously viewing light that is millions of years old - to now using x-rays.

Anyway, this is the first time that I can't wait for Monday on a Friday.

Ye, thats the only thing which is really new to us at this moment at the Chandra Project/Fermi. If they had something really big, they would announce it on television.

For as i know NASA, they can LIE like the best and having always bored conferences anyway. So i think 99% sure its gonna be about the X-Ray bubble they found.

No artificial stuff on the moon, No Nibiru coming, No Blackhole which is eating up the earth.

I agree and starred your post, but there is a black hole, proven to be at our galactic center, around Sagittarius A; I think.

I aint a scientist, just going by what I evidence I can find on the net.

I don't exalt any bugger, thanks, i just respect the guys proliferation and batting average.

I'll say it again - i look at this view every night from my living room and never has there been an obviously multi-colored star up there, so something factor was different; the viewing conditions; the object; my eyesight (seems as reliable as usual and the same goes for my sanity, so make of that what you will, but it's certainly not a lack of observation

Not very excited when you look at previous NASA statements.

I reckon it will turn out to be a comet that we have previously undetected that is only visible to Earth telescopes every twenty thousand years.

As much as I would like it to be, it is not going to be ET who needs to phone home.

I think that was a contribution from Fermi. I don't know for sure if they work together or not but the article clearly states it was found by the Chandra X-ray Observatory.

It actually says at the end of the earlier article that Chandra may have seen this as well, but they had yet to fully analyze the data.

They upsetting me more times, when we though there was something big going on. This conference wont be different then any other. NASA never share info about artificial stuff, because they can harm the national security, and its not their job to do so.

If you want proof? Build our own ATS Full HD Hubble look-a-like sattelite, then picture the hell out of our beautiful space. You will get more proof, then NASA did gathered all in 30+ years.

I was thinking about this on the way to work this morning lol.

They will probably announce something like they are in fact going to reclassify Pluto as a planet lol.

They have seen some pretty amazing things while they have been staring at that Plutoid.

Best website ever for info on Pluto. PERIOD!

What amazes me - and indeed I find it quite a sad indictment on the intelligence of poster here - is that NASA make an annoucement of a new discovery of immense interest to cosmologists, and because it's not what ATSers what them to have announced, they assume NASA are lying

It's like the USGS announcing a new discovery and everyone assuming it must mean they've discovered the Earth is hollow or was built by the Magratheans.

It's happened time and time and time again.

NASA does not exist purely to satisify your own fantasies. It exists to study the cosmos. And make new and exciting discoveries like this one.

If you are not interested in the cosmos, stop listening to NASA and stick to David Icke.

Agree. Hope they gonna talk about that X-Ray bubble. I am really interested what they found out. Guess we will hear it soon. Imo, it wont satisfy much members here on ATS which are fantasying just into clean air or want to hear something different.
