strange events here
1 i have 2 outside dogs (black lab healer mix) they have a huge heated dog house. for the last few nites they have been sleeping in the barn under my truck. and lay on my doorstep the whole day (they have never done this i can hardly get them to come near the house)

2 lots of military flights at night (im used to them tuesday thru thursdays) after a few years you can figure out there flight and traing scedules) non of these are a6s or f18s mostly big transports and prop driven p3s (p3s has thermal capability)

3 i feel lots of little sways. just like a small little jolt not a quake just like a small wave- 2-3 then its good for a hour or 2

4 lots of crows.. no big deal other then we have 4 feet of snow on the ground never seen crows this far up in the mountians unless its summer.

5 there is a stretch of the river here that didnt freeze this year, froze over up stream and down stream, also the rocks on the banks didnt hold any snow as where the river lower down had 3 feet of ice all the way to the shore line

Interesting. Seeing how I am downriver from you a couple of hours, i need to go for a walk this afternoon and check out the birds. Seemed normal yesterday so I can compare it to today. My dogs are better than the past couple of days but are very clingy and my chickens didn't lay ANY eggs yesterday.

Turns out I have a very knowledgable contact regarding the reactors. They sent me the following article. It is from the Homeland Security Newswire.

Official: U.S. safe from Japanese radiation

U.S nuclear officials said that there was very little chance that harmful levels of radiation from Japan's nuclear reactors would reach Hawaii or the west coast of the United States; the head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) also said nuclear plants in the United States were designed to withstand natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis; readings from radiation sensors placed on the west coast have not detected any increases in radiation levels and experts do not expect any increases; Japanese utilities have flooded two nuclear reactors with sea water in a desperate attempt to cool them down and prevent a meltdown; the NRC has dispatched two nuclear experts to Japan to assist with efforts to keep three damaged reactors from melting down

“Based on the type of reactor design and the nature of the accident, we see a very low likelihood — really, a very low probability — that there’s any possibility of harmful radiation levels in the United States or in Hawaii or any other U.S. territories,” Jaczko said.

Some very good, level-headed, scientific information. We need a little more of that around here as of late.

Soooo later yesterday afternoon, after deciding I was just going to dismiss the shaking/movement I had been feeling at work, I went into a coworkers office on another part of the floor to wait for her while she finished getting ready to leave so we could walk out together...and what is the first thing she says to me? "Ok, I don't know what's going on, but I SWEAR I felt shaking at least twice today." My heart dropped. I asked her about what time or when she felt them. She said she wasn't sure, but she knew it was after lunchtime. Previous to this, we had just been talking about work related stuff, I had made zero mention of me feeling, sensing anything. She's never brought this up before, and we've both been working in these high rise buildings for years so I found this very unusual.

And then, (I'm working from home today), another coworker was instant messaging me and said she was getting waves of dizziness. She sits in the office next to mine, so while I don't remember saying anything to her about me feeling anything yesterday, I can't completely rule it (as far as her in particular...the other coworker I know I didn't for sure).

I just wanted to update with that information. I'm not so convinced anymore that it's my imagination...but I don't have an answer as to what it is.

Also, I noticed this morning that my cats aren't eating very much food. They both love their food, so seeing anything left in their dishes is concerning. There are no obvious signs in our environment that would explain why they are upset (nothing new introduced, same routines, etc.) And they both are wanting constant attention & to be held, otherwise they're hiding. Normally they're laying all out in the open spread out like they're Queen of Sheba to be waited on hand and foot.

Just had a thought not sure if it has been mentioned going back to read the rest of the thread now on page 5. But is there such thing called a magma tsunami? Or is there even something like that? And if there was how long would it take to travel from Japan to the west coast. Sorry to derail a bit just had to ask.

Hi Westcoast! First, I want to thank you for your input & analysis in ALL the quake threads. The Japan tragedy is just horrific, and my heart goes out to all the people affected. When you connected the dots on the effect the stress could have in the Cascadia region, pardon my french, I was just like "Oh Sh*t." I'm on the East Coast & I can only imagine how nervous you must be. I'm hoping and praying you and everyone in that region won't have to find out.

So, I was thinking (having nightmares mostly) about what effect 66 feet of movement would have on the Cascade Region...and I thought that the USGS must measure crustal displacement up there on a regualr basis, knowing that one of the faults is basically a locked, ticking time bomb. Forgive me if this data I'm posting is redundant, but I came across the Pacific Northwest Geodetic Array (PANGA), which measures the crustal displacement of the Pacific NW region. Their site is here: Pacific Northwest Geodetic Array

They have real-time readings that you can watch, but when I tried to find historical data to lend support to the quakes you experienced after the big one in Japan, I couldn't find it. They did however have these readings from 15 minutes after the Japan quake hit:
Link

And these showing the displacement in Sendai:

I also found this blog entry from the American Geophysical Union that explained one of these readings here:
AGU Blogosphere
My head hurt as I was trying to digest that post but I think they're saying the crust displacement was SouthEast in Japan. The readings from the Cascadia Tiltmeter at PANGA show some definite displacement there downwards and North East (I think?). I'm hoping either you or another resident quakewatcher can disseminate that and maybe explain/connect some more dots. I also wonder if there's any forecasting that can be done by watching these GPS stations?

Yesterday on my way home from work a car ahead of me tapped his brakelights, and then continued on. So when I got to the same spot as him I looked around to see why he did that, and saw a deer getting ready to cross in front of me. But wasn't doing it, more like pacing around nervously or confused? (I know, not a big deal)

Then this morning on the way to the store, I saw an SUV stopped in the middle of the road with his hazard lights blinking so when I got close in the lane next to him I slowed down. Then noticed that there were two geese slowly crossing the road. So I stopped and they meandered a bit, but slowly but surely they got across to the other side. (I know, still not a big deal)

Then this evening on my way to get my son, I saw a car off to the side of the road (in the oncoming lane) with their hazard lights on, so again I slowed down. And as I passed by I saw a woman running quickly in my direction and I looked down on the road and saw a cat laying in the middle of the road that had been hit. I went to stop, because I wanted to help, but I kept going because I figured that the one person was probably enough to help the animal. And then I just burst into tears because...well...it was a cat (own 2 myself...or..err..rather they own me) and it was yet one more sad sight to a long day of sad happenings.

All of this happened in about a 24 hour period & within a couple miles of where I live. Is this a case of more animals being disoriented? I know I've been, so it's not a stretch to think they are. But why?

*side note: on my way back home, there was no sign of the cat so I'm sure the woman took it to get help. Please, I hope.

Wow...thank you for those links! (saved them) I am hoping that I'll be able to figure them out. I live just a few miles from the first station listed on there. (Mount Vernon) To the untrained eye, it looks like a heck of a lot of movement, but since I don't know how to read it just can't tell for sure. Hopefully someone else will able to explain it.

I guess I always figured we had the GPS stations but had never looked into it. Now I am wishing I had taken to time to learn about then before so I would know what I was looking at!

@Onthelookout: As to the swaying...anything is possible. I know this might sound stupid, but I have to ask if it may have been the wind? I know it's been very windy lately. There are two quakes listed out on the peninsula yesterday (small ones) other than that, nothing officiall. Who knows, really though how all this energy moving around translates. You know? I am still thinking that our land mass has to be reacting.

As to the animals...odd. Perhaps a coincidence...maybe you are paying more attention...or synchronicity. I am not even sure what I mean by that, do you?

Good question regarding the wind, as it has been windy off and on. I can't say for sure regarding my experiences at work, because I'm away from any windows and can't confirm whether the wind is blowing or not.

However, this evening I've still been feeling the movement/swaying and I've been keeping a list of the times it was most noticeable and whether there was any wind blowing etc. I'm on the 3rd floor and have nothing but super tall trees outside my windows so I'm able to see immediately whether there is the slightest breeze. So far, each and every time I felt the movement, there wasn't so much as a quiver outside. In fact it looked *too* still outside. During the windy periods, I wasn't feeling a thing.

Regarding the animals, it might be I was paying more attention. But I think the other interesting thing about it is just how observant other people are being. I only noticed any of it because someone else already had their hazard lights on or braking lights. I'm use to being the ONLY one who is noticing these things, but either other people are watching things like a hawk (how many people are sensing a "disturbance in the force"?) or there are more animals than usual wandering around where they usually don't and getting peoples attention.

ALL RIGHT THATS ENOUGH! This is very disturbing. I live in the pacific northwest and have been feeling very disoriented and sick with much ringing and pressure changes going on in my head for the last week or so. Tonight has been VERY bad. I just pray we are all being incredibly neurotic and that there is nothing to all these subjective sicknesses.

ok strange morning
woke up and on my porch the dogs had brought me a fish, looks like a 2 inch trout,
first off dont think they hatch in the winter too much around here, closest creek is a little ways off.
and why did they leave it on my doorstep i dont have any thing to trade?
also would like to add theres like 3 feet of snow on the ground here.
maybe a bird dropped it.
greatest thing in the world for me, Im a commercial fisherman so if i have dogs that can sniff out and find fish im rich....

@Nitro67...I agree. I hope we are all just crazy.

@AnnMarie: You beat me to it. Did you look close-up at where they are located? Not the 'normal' spots. The deepest one is aways NE of the Mountain....then the next was shallower SE of the montain and the next one was very shallow right on top. Wierd. Not anywhere near the seismic field that the last little swarm was.

@fritzcat....that's just wierd. A trout???? In the snow??? Since when did your dogs start fishing? Maybe you should go check the stream and make sure there aren't a bunch of dead fish in it?

I am fighting a cold now this morning and I am hoping that is the reason for my head pressure and diziness. I am trying to ignore the video of the geologist talking about an earthquake this weekend. PLEASE...I don't need a professional to fuel my paranoia!!!

Okay, my big quake dog is starting to freak me out. He isn't barking like normal....he's sniffing.

Started about five minutes ago. He is going around sniffing the floor all over...then stops in the middle of the room, looks around and raises his head sniffing the air.

Right now he got up on a chair and is looking around like he can't quite figure something out. My little dog is starting to do it too now. What bothers me is that he isn't just sniffing, but looking. He has never done this before.

I KNEW I shouldn't have caved in and watched the video of the geologist predicting a west coast quake!!

I hope you feel better and it's just a cold
The quakes all over today have been off - and out of place!!!! Do look at the video - it is worth watching! Good point on checking to see about dead fish in the area - otherwise, cool dog that ice fishes
- but some how I don't think so....

ok the fish thing has me baffled, seeing as it was verry cold this morning, I didnt see any birds till around 10:30 or so . The few birds we have dont take to flying when its cold. so im going to rule out bird

as for stream, not sure its to hard to get to now the snow is waist to chest deep and i know the dogs didnt get it from there. no tracks down there.
its a strange it wasnt froze either was real fresh looking they had chewed it a bit..
i thought it was a frog at first because the color and head.
but its was a trout after i did reconstruction of it. lol

Also ive had 2 p3s (at least there gray turbo props) flying east.. havent heard them come back yet..
I am rite on the military flight coridor from Whidbey Island, So i always know when they are around they do a lot of low level flights thru the mountians
The P3s always come 20min-1 hour before the fighters (id guesse to recon and give target info to the planes)
they have been flying one way 2-3 times a day now only thing i can think of is they have thermal hi res imiaging and are monitoring somthing. Like to There isnt much space between me and canada so its a great unpopulated route they take. i heard one come back way south but it was hours after going east.
like to ad they wouldnt be going to spokane because there field is shut down and moved to mosses lake because there repaving the runnway.

So is there anyone in montana or idaho hearing loud prop driven planes going east or southwest?

en.wikipedia.org...

they are also verry good at detecting magnetic anomolies hmmm
thermal imiaging

Regarding the chickens, we have more than 30 chickens and over the past week they have been laying 2-3 eggs a day. Usually we get around 2 dozen a day and sell them. We have barely gotten a dozen this week.

I am nowhere near you guys in WA, I live in Indiana, I understand that the new madrid fault isclose to me?

I am also wondering if your chickens are coming out of their pens?

Ours only come out for maybe 20 minutes a day and they dont eat when they are out they just scout around the outside of the coop and go back in, usually in pairs but sometimes solo.

You're very welcome. I wish I could make sense of them better!

I also came across this EXCELLENT post by an Engineer at MIT, giving a very thorough & detailed explanation as to why the US will not be affected by radiation in Japan. It's kind of long but definitely worth the read. The link is below (Pardon the somewhat snippy link title, but the article really is titled that):

You Can Stop Worrying About A Radiation Disaster in Japan - Here's Why

Hopefully that will allay some radiation poisoning fears, at least.
Sorry you're sick to boot...feel better soon!
