The more sophisticated scales now used take into account differences in the types of waves generated by earthquakes; Mb magnitudes reflect waves that have traveled through great depths, and MS magnitudes, waves that travel along the surface (the symbol for magnitudes on Richter’s scale is ML). The new scales (including many used only in a particular area) have been defined so that their values are consistent with those of the original scale, and these too are popularly called magnitudes “on the Richter scale.”

Must be this.
Dalai Lama threatens China with similar earthquake as Haiti!
The Dalai Lama claims the massive earthquake that hit Haiti might just hit China next. Citing recent 'bad karma' over the suppression of Tibet's population, the Delai Lama said he would pray for the victims in Haiti, but hates the Chinese leadership for years of brutal supression. He took credit for the creation of the 'The Great Dalai Lama Jump' that would spark the next China earthquake.
"If everyone in Tibet jumped up and landed at an exact moment, it would cause the Earth to tremble!" Said the Tibetan Minister of Movement, decribing the 'Great Jump' that could be performed by 100% of the Tibetan population.

UPDATE. I got answers !
Seems people are not noticing the 8.6 mb is not Richter scale. It is an updated specialized scale measuring more detailed information.
Here is a link that explains it.
Richter scale has the letters ML
Mb are for waves in great depths.
So a 8.6 yes it was, just not in or Richter scale we are used to.

im begining to become really skeptical, for one main reason, the only info on this "quake" can be found on forums, and blogs, and one siesmic website, that may or may not be credible, just saying
If it is true, it will take quite a bit of time for any commercialised media to grab ahold.
