Some news from the conference -

We will find Earth’s twin in 2010’, predicts scientist

London, January 26 (ANI): One of the world’s leading astronomers has predicted that scientists will have detected the first truly Earth-like planet outside the solar system by the end of this year.

According to a report in The Times, Professor Michel Mayor, of Geneva University, who led the team that discovered the first extrasolar planet in 1995, said that he was confident that a planet of a similar size and composition to Earth would be found in the near future.

“The search for twins of Earth is motivated by the ultimate prospect of finding sites with favourable conditions for the development of life. We’ve entered a new phase in this search,” he said, while addressing a Royal Society conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) programme.

He told the audience, which included representatives from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, that dramatic technological progress over the past 15 years had led to the discovery of more than 400 exoplanets orbiting stars similar to the Sun.

However, very few if any of the planets discovered so far are likely to be viable candidates for incubating life, as most of them are too large.

Very large planets are likely to have very active tectonic plates, making for a highly turbulent environment.

To date, the smallest exoplanet found is 1.7 times the mass of the Earth.

A further condition for a planet to be habitable is that it orbits its star at such a distance that its water would be liquid.

“If the planet’s too close, it will be blazing hot and all the water will evaporate and if it’s too far away, it will be ice,” Professor Mayor said.

He said that NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, which is carrying the largest telescope to have been sent beyond the Earth’s orbit, will be the first to find a planet that meets both these criteria.

The telescope, which has been in orbit around the Sun since March last year, is focused on a dense star field in the Orion spiral arm of the Milky Way.

Monitoring more than 100,000 stars every half-hour for three years, it is looking for variations in the brightness of stars caused by planets as small as Earth passing in front of them.

Within about four years, Kepler is likely to have found planets of the same size as Earth that are also in the “habitable zone”.
.

Not exactly ET life here on Earth, but it's interesting news none the less. My god, they really are dangling a big carrot in front of our noses this year so far!!

Exactly. This point is quite intriguing, and I felt that it needed more consideration.

Here's another story from todays speakers at the conference -

Life out there will be nearly as we know it

ALIENS will look and talk like humans, a leading Cambridge scientist has claimed.

He said: "They will look weird at first but once people recover from the shock they will see similarities. They will have heads and limbs and eyes, they won't just be vapour or in the shape of a pyramid.

Some interesting statements here from a Cambridge Scientist. He seems to know quite confidently how it's going to pan out!

That is pretty shocking if you consider that Davis (or whatever his name is) who spoke yesterday evening said he doesn't believe in abductions and military regarding ET's, because the ones people describe look too human which he doesn't find enough fishy. Hm... Why such a twist? I have to say, this IS the year, but man..i'm curious and excited how all this plays out. Maybe the GFL channelings were right all along and the Andromedans and Plaeidians have pushed the TPTB to the corner. Yeah

did you not spot that the scientist never said 2010, he said 4 years. We may find an earth sized planet in the HZ around an M class star by the end of this year but certainly not around a G type star like sol. Like he said we need around 3-4 years of kepler data to confirm that.

Skeptic pesimistic people who are in denial and think how unique humanity is should be locked up in brainwashed US and A with the masses. No offence, but what you just wrote is a complete rubbish bloody nonsense. If you are serious, then i feel very sorry for your close-minded soul. Hopefully it escapes the box soon.

On the other hand, if you are some NWO disinfo agent, pi$$ on you!

Peace!

How am I close-minded? I don't accept some very unlikely (impossible) scenarios, (UFOs coming down, Alien contact) and I think that makes me more open minded than someone who accepts such unrealistic ideas.

We will never have disclosure because there is nothing to disclose. A world where UFOs are possible is a VERY different world then we live in. The sooner you accept this, the better your life will be. UFOlogy is a collossal waste of time.

Then you and others who post such comments do not belong at ATS Aliens and UFO's forum.

This was discussed fairly recently with ATS Admin and it was clarified that posts such as yours are deemed to have no place at ATS, are worthy of deletion and the members who post them would not be tolerated here. You are obviously completely closed minded to the subject this forum was created to discuss and are only here as a heckler rather than a genuine, open minded participant.

As Springer said in response to my thread on this topic:

I have no problem with skeptics. This thread is not about skeptics, but those who have made up their mind that there is nothing to investigate, because ETs don't exist and the whole investigation is futile and pointless.

Those type are what the "ALERT" button is for. People who espouse such bollocks are not here to discuss and therefore will not be tolerated period. .

This is a discussion forum.

I would caution you that just because you think that's what somebody meant in a post isn't going to get their post removed.

They would literally have to be as crass as what you've written. If they do that, then the post is OFF TOPIC and will be removed if it is brought to the attention of the staff. ....

That's why the ALERT BUTTON exists...

Springer...

www.abovetopsecret.com...

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Such posts are becoming more and more common at ATS, in contravention of the forum mission statement, and I encourage members to alert them, as Springer requested, in order to help reverse this trend of closed-minded, pseudo-skeptical debunkery that has come to dominate in this forum.

[edit on 26-1-2010 by Malcram]

I came to this sight because the motto is: DENY IGNORANCE.

I cannot believe you would suggest that my posts be deleted for disagreeing. That to me is worse than any censoring that most conspiracy theorists would despise. You really want people who don't believe in UFOs to be silenced? Why? What are you afraid of? I am not attacking anyone.

I have every right to give my opinion about extra terrestrial life. I feel just as strongly as you and I belong in the forums every bit as much as you.

Your posts directly and obviously contravene the purpose of the forum as stated by Admin above and he makes it clear what the consequences of that are. End of. You say almost word for word, in several of your posts, what Admin says "will not be tolerated" and should be deleted, because it is not conducive to open minded discussion but is simply outright denial.

Alien and UFO forum 'mission statement':

This forum is dedicated to the discussion of historic and contemporary events related to extraterrestrial encounters, UFO sightings, and speculation about related subjects. Discussion topics and follow-up responses in this forum will likely tend to lean in favor of the existence of extraterrestrials and the related conspiracies, scandals, and cover-ups. Members who would seek to refute such theories should be mindful of AboveTopSecret.com\'s tradition of supporting the examination of the \"extraterrestrial phenomenon\" on the related conspiracy theories, cover-ups, and scandals.

You consider the very purpose of this forum, as enshrined in it's mission statement above, to be "disinfo" and "a colossal waste of time" - your words. So why are you here?

When you post as quoted above you'll be alerted and if the Mods are actually prepared to enforce Admins word on the matter and the forum's mission statement, they will deal with it.

If not, then ATS truly has 'gone to the dogs'.

If there is a planet out there with 'human-like' aliens then it goes that that planet will also have ANIMALS like earth does ! So they are aliens too ? This is what has crossed my mind so many times but doesn't seem to have been thought of by many more ? So there would be thousands of species of 'ALIEN' on the one planet !

Hi Pro,
There was at least one very good mainstream documentary, that dealt with this. It's probably been ripped to Youtube by now, I'll have a look.

UFO's and the MSM
The Aliens watching nukes stories.
The Ambassador to the aliens stories.
Are they just to get us to tune in to the Royal Societies royalsociety.org... event that will take place on Oct 4/5th
Thats what I thought....but the more I do searchs and try to look harder, it seems really, this is being kept under wraps....because one of the themes of this conference will be = "Extra-terrestrial life and arising political issues for the UN agenda"

yep....
