According to Professor Davies, “weird” microbes that belong to a completely separate tree of life, dubbed the “shadow biosphere”, could be present in isolated ecological niches in which ordinary life struggles to survive. Likely hiding places include deserts, scalding volcanic vents, the dry valleys of Antartica or salt-saturated lakes.
Yeah, I already mentioned this, but just like classic ATS, everybody is more interested in "aliens that look like humans", then what the article is actually saying. They just looked at the attention grabbing headline that said, "are aliens walking amongst us", and everybody is screaming that this is real, and full disclosure is upon us.

Did anyone bother to read the article?

Hehe, no, that was just a "scenario" in order to grab your attention. The article had nothing to do with actual "aliens walking next to us". It was a lead in, to grab your attention, when it just talks about a meeting that will discuss different possibilities of life in microbes, and what could happen if we happen to discover life on other planets. There is no room for speculation, when the article is pretty blunt, with just a fancy lead-in.

Note a few things.
1) The article's headline states 'To discuss whether extraterrestrials are here on Earth." Not, extraterrestrial microbes.
So yeah, there is room for speculation based on the article title itself. Let alone when they also talk about extraterrestrials being a part of your own family.
Yes, I know, that was never my point. My point, was that you guys are spinning this in a completely different direction, and acting like aliens are walking next to humans(ie. full disclosure), when the article isn't implying that at all. It's talking about finding different possibilities of life on other planets, and how SETI hasn't been doing the best job, so we should look at different methods(microbes and planets). Yes, ET-life will be world-changing, but you guys need to stick to what the article really is, and not what you wish it to be, just from a lead-in scenario.
2) Any kind of disclosure of extraterrestrial life is a world-changing event. So either way, this is still a very valid topic of conversation.
This is all just hearsay. I'm talking about what IS in the original article, not what I think is in the article, due to a large imagination.
Also, considering the other "developments" of late (I just looked at YET ANOTHER article about some Scientist saying that ET will be *just like us*... the article can be found on the sidebar of new topics right now) I can understand how people may be thinking that there may be just a little more to this "meeting" than the part of the article you snipped for us to read.
Nice to know that you like to laugh at folks, though.
I suppose maybe you have a sense of humor.
Of course it was, and that was my entire point. When you have most of the members here talking about "aliens walking next to humans", it's clear to me that they didn't even read the full article, as that part was just a lead-in, to attract the attention of the readers. There are posts talking about taxing ET-aliens, protecting them from prosecution, etc etc, when the article, and most likely the conference, isn't talking about that at all.

Maybe the article was delibaratley worded like this to attract viewers and people to the conference, who knows. I guess we will all find out soon enough though.
g
Seems to me as though he's trying to discuss the truth with a bunch of people who are already aware of the truth...he wont get very far...
Paul Davies, a physicist at Arizona State University, will suggest tomorrow that the search for extra-terrestrial life should be focused right under our noses. His audience will include representatives from Nasa, the European Space Agency and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, while Lord Rees, President of the Royal Society and Astronomer Royal, will also lead one of the sessions

ideas of what form an alien intelligence might take, how it might try to communicate with us, and how we should respond if we ever do make contact.

It's taken the scientific establishment over half-a-century to get to this stage, a live "debate" Have scientists of this stature had conferences in private previously?.. after all this time of mostly public scoffing. Why discuss as alien microbes, (already found anyway) in places like deep-sea heated vents, or anywhere that there should be no life but there is. They already know about these things, ie; organisms that can exist in any hostile environment, but would be peculiar to that environment. Stuff like that is miles away from the other agendas at the conference, like how to prepare mankind to the knowledge of other civilisations or extra-terrestrials. How they are going to package up this conference for our humble lug-holes should be worth watching, or rather listening to. There has to be a more singular reason for this to take place, any guesses?
