Fiji is preparing for a tsunami. They've sent messages to all phones to warn people.

Source

An official at the Fiji Meteorological Service told BNO News that it is urging people to evacuate to higher ground, and fears that tsunami may hit coastal areas around 12.37 p.m. local time. The official said that mobile phone networks have sent messages to all phones to warn them and begin evacuations.

I've been trying off and on to get the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center site to open and can't get in. I was just on Twitter and there were hundreds of posts a minute so I imagine the warning site is overwhelmed.

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND
COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

It seems that no news is out as to what damage if any has occurred. The warning for Hawaii is for around 6:30 pm local time.

"EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. FOR
THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

NO TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS FOR OTHER COASTAL AREAS ALTHOUGH SOME
MAY EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES. FOR ALL AREAS COVERED BY
THIS CENTER...THE TSUNAMI WARNING AND WATCH ARE CANCELLED.

THIS WILL BE THE FINAL BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE."

The final bulletin so we just wait for info about what happened locally I guess. I hope nobody was hurt.

Wow.
I wonder if people are still going to argue that this is "normal" activity.

The frequency of these large quakes is shocking.
It seems though, and thankfully, that the death toll has been somewhat low, even considering all of the happenings. Let us hope it remains that way.

Most people just don't know how many earthquakes are going on these days because if they don't kill anybody or cause any damage they aren't news worthy. This thread shows just how many are actually happening daily! Even I was shocked when I looked at the link to the monitoring site.

I've been trying to get a handle on exactly what the numbers mean. I'm sure there is an expert among these posts that may enlighten me and others. My question is this: What is the difference between, say a 7.0 and a 7.1 earthquake?

A little research has shown me that using the Moment Magnitude Scale (MMS), an 8.0 earthquake is about 32 times stronger than a 7.0 and 1000 times more powerful than a 6.0. The scale is logarithmic (not linear). So if an increase of two MMS units equals a multiplication factor of 1000, and one MMS unit equals ~32 , what does an increase of 0.1 equal? Is it double, triple or some smaller factor?

Edit for typo

Phage?
Phage was the same guy that was arguing the other night that all of this activity is normal.
Don't get me wrong, I respect the guy tremendously, but I don't see this activity as normal.

I wish I could disagree with him, but in *averages* it's not outside the realm of *normal*...

The Ring of Fire and this particular area is known to be historically unstable and has ~fits and starts~ every few years it seems...

Now...if this keeps continuing...then we might have a case, but, till I see more than a day or two of high M's I'll hold *my view*...

Also there is the outside possibility of some Volcanic disturbance that we're not aware of yet...

if you look at the Ocean Floor in Google Earth you'll see the faults that link the Samoan/Santa Cruz and Sumatra quakes...

Maybe just slip fault energy release transfer from the original a while ago?

The way I see the "averages" is that we are about on par with yearly totals in magnitude over the course of just a few days, going on a week?

I don't remember the numbers he rattled off the other night and I don't even remember which thread it was in (although it probably was this very thread). But as far as 7+ magnitude quakes we were like 2 short of breaking the yearly totals... That was before this latest round of quakes. So we are above it now.

That isn't average.

Maybe average for a YEAR, but not for a month.
No way, no how.
