That's really not a big deal..

I have been to see Old Faithful, the guides will tell you she can be 30 minutes early or up too 2 hours late.

"Faithful" is a loose term to the exact time.

-edit- That is why they give "predicted" times for a show.

Yes there are fish, fish dont die from minor quakes, they die from the water heating up beyond their threshold or from toxins leaking into the water, no one is reporting either right now.

My first post early this a.m. might put your mind at ease that I am on topic. I think I even state in subsequent posts that I have been more interested in what actually will happen on that date, what actually is happening to our magnetic field - and so on. All of which could be causing the recent increase in activity around the world including Yellowstone. None of which is based on prophecy but rather on scientific data from various scientific communities. You've taken my references to the whole 2012 date completely out of context and apparently without all of the facts.

We have no idea why, but even the first link that you provide does not have any current data.

Am I right in thinking that someone posted yesterday stating that" They would be more concerned if there was no data coming out to us"? ..Is that where we are now?

And what's up with the double black and missing line on

www.quake.utah.edu...

its all very odd

re homeland security - it's true we've started seeing less info since the FEMA alert came out yesterday.

lets see if Utah does it's big update dump today like the last 3 days.

Has anyone checked to see if the park has been closed?

There are numerous seismology experts that aren't under the control of the government. I can't imagine that not one of them wouldn't have the guts to say something. It really is possible they don't have a clear grasp of the data and all that it may imply. The seimosgraphs not working does lead one to speculate though. It's a helluva time for equipment malfunction.

If you allow - it can be compared with the long ride on a bus. Most of the people choose to relax and read, sleep or chat. Some of them sit on the front seat and watch what the driver is doing, road conditions etc.
It is just a choice.
We cannot do anything, change anything. We are just watching a true life story. Maybe learn something that we can use some other time.

About the empty lines on seismograph charts, sometimes some of them get overlapped with others for some reason (software glitch?), they aren't really "missing".

Some interesting reading

Nice background checking.

But at this point.... all the sensors listed here www.quake.utah.edu... Are not giving ANY updated data.

The whole grid is out.

Yeah, sorry only came on about an hour ago, just after LKW stopped, so I have only just noticed.

There's a good chance they are working on repairing the main comms fault though, so I'd give it a couple of hours before calling shenanigans.

One thing to note is that the new loss of data isn't displaying that cute but unreadable symbol at the far right of the graphs, as they have done on all the failed readings.
My guess is that the symbol was referring to a "no response" from the station, and the reason it is absent from the LKW now is because the shut down is deliberate for repair.

I'll give it until midnight here (5 or so hours) and then I'll start wondering if they've shut off the info for very specific reasons.

You can guarantee whole Uni departments who live for this kind of event and never thought they'd see it will be working flat-out to get the system working. So if it doesn't start up again I'll be extremely suspicious.

One thing that does bug me though, for a team offering their data out to other students and bodies for use in study, you'd think they'd have a message up stating there is a problem and what they are doing to rectify it wouldn't you? I would.

Hi there,

thanks for the link to the blog and the image from Mt St Helens. I posted the trace for Mt St Helen's (May 1980) further back in the thread and it also shows that form of trace.

One example I think that matches well with this form of trace appears in the station YTP for Dec 26 within the first two hours on that page. There are several shown but the clearest one (I think) appears just after 08:41 (UTC) -- a blue trace line.

Here's a chunk of the trace for those who might read this later when the link to the U of Utah site might be unavailable. I've ringed three possible "harmonic" traces. (Funny thing, I thought they were volcanics.
) Note: this image will be truncated. To see the whole image, please right-click on it and click "View Image".

(Original Image from U 0f Utah. Graphics added by the author of this post. Published for informational purposes only.)

I'd appreciate your opinion on it.

Many thanks,

Mike

Generally, government does not like natural events. They cannot control them, and it is not good for the control of the sheep. It gives the idea that there something much bigger than "science" and political control.
It encourages independent thinking. All this is not really welcome in tightly controled "democratic" society.

So, that is one more reason why I enjoy stories like this.

Yes - I think it's fair to say that every seismologist worth his salt is watching this 24/7 and holidays aren't even an issue. So here are my guesses:

1) there is a new url they are all looking at (let's try to find it)

2) those with the url have been told not to say a word in very strong terms to prevent any unnecessary panic (and I'm guessing FEMA gets to decide what's necessary)

3) since this all happened during the second set of mary lake harmonics - I don't see how it could not be a conscious decision to black out. The first harmonics got international seismologists to put Yellowstone as a volcano watch 2 days before FEMA acknowledged it.

Yep, this relates to the "DC" list on the right hand side. A normal number will indicate the line being higher than centered, and a - number will indicate the line being lower. There are a couple of graphs showing massive changes on this where the lines are buried beneath the next or even the one after.

I don't know what that means, not looked into that part yet.

Yay! Seismologist are now adding manually earthquakes to the list!
So probably charts will be fixed too (I hope) now.

Which have they added?

Last one I saw on the list was a 2.7, and its still the last one on the list.

Unless they added one in the body of the list.

-edit- yeah, I guess it did say 282 quakes before, now it reads 284. There is life there after all
