Sustained activity on YML, a little on YMP and quite a bit at LKWY. Nothing drastic as yet to report.

There have been some medium sized ones (relatively to the magnitudes of the strongest EQs occurred until now in this swarm) and many small sized ones that haven't been manually added or captured by the automated systems. Plus, at the moment at least on the LKWY station there's constant and erratical rumbling that is going on for hours and doesn't really look like noise from wind. By looking at the charts it seems the situation is getting busier as time passes.

2008 Earthquake Swarm Wednesday 31st December 2008 An earthquake swarm has been recorded at Yellowstone volcano. The swarm has been occurring since 26th December beneath Yellowstone Lake, three to six miles south-southeast of Fishing Bridge, Wyoming. A total of more than 250 earthquakes have been measured in the swarm. The largest earthquake was a magnitude 3.9 at 10:15 pm MST on 27th December. There have been nine earthquakes between magnitude 3 to 3.9 and approximately 24 between magnitude 2 to 3. Some events were felt by people in Yellowstone National park. Yellowstone is a dormant super-volcano, and earthquake swarms, ground uplift, and geothermal activity are common. There are no other signs of unrest at the volcano.

www.volcanolive.com...

If you notice, it says, " There are no other signs of unrest at the volcano"
Sounds like they are saying this is all natural and does occur?

Is yellow stone the park with the crater(maybe geiser) that errupts every 64,000 years. I think if that crater/geiser gets set off, it will cause taupo (an extremely large crater/volcano lake) which will have devastating effects on our world, probably causing alot of people to die

I agree, the more info we have the better. I've been following this thread since day one and also at GLP. Very interesting. I also wrote and published an article "Is Yellowstone's Super Volcano Coming Alive?" with helpful links to seismic recorders and latest news. Let' hope this is NOT the big one.

Read the entire thread people.

Alot of your common questions have already been answered.

-edit- Honestly, if you don't take the time to read it all.. your just being lazy and posting for posting's sake.

It will cause most of the world to die eventually..alot of america will be wiped out,ash will build up on roofs...even in the uk roofs will collapse from the weight of ash,it will block out the sun for years...bad news for plants.Tough times all in all...ie we revert back to primitive living until it wears off and the population is ALOT smaller...

Yes, thanks all you noobs who have been stating the obvious or rehashing what was already discussed thirty pages ago.

Swarms are not unusual, but ones of this size and stamina are.
No it doesn't automatically mean it is about to erupt.
Yes we are all aware of what an eruption there would mean.
No, we're not going to explain again how to read the UofU graphs.

All of the above has been discussed already, several times.
To all those saying it is nothing, do your research first and read through this thread and links properly.
All those suggesting it's the end of the world, again, go back through this thread and links, and do the research.

This is unusual, it's not normal behavior seen before in Yellowstone.
Personally, I think we're going to see a Hydrothermic Explosion, as there is evidence of many of them happening since the last caldera eruption. The last Hydrothermic event was about 3000 years ago.

And, FYI, I've checked all the stations listed for Yellowstone, the only ones currently registering are in a ring. LKW, YFT, YMR, YNR, YUF are all working, all the rest are off-line. I'm guessing there's a fault, but it is annoying considering the YML was the most useful in showing activity.

Wow, I found something that hasn't been posted!

Archived webicorders for lkwy... going back a few years.

theinterveners.org...

Now for the bored. We can try to find analogs to what is going on there now. So far I haven't found any... But looking.

Watch the water out flow from Yellowstone Lake. Air temperatures are and have been below freezing for a sustained period so the top layer of ground is frozen and snow covered. The lake is frozen with ice on it. The water flow from the lake at a time like this is typically droping. (Median of 79 years of data) If you look at the trend the outflow is increasing which means the lake is warming and expanding or ground deformation is forcing water out of the lake.

In the end it's the physical changes that will tell us if something is really up. And if this keeps trending up it is not a good sign.

Of course maybe the wind across the ice forces more water out of the lake.

Lost some of the helicorders. Most people are probably out having fun with New Years.

I have fun all the time.

That lkwy archive is good stuff. Haven't found anything like the last few days to current on there.

Nope, I just needed a break from the ATS madness.

Check out some of these photos of Hells Half-Acre, just west of here (Casper, WY.) This was a result of the last big one and the rift runs all the way to yellowstone. It used to be open to the public but there are too many rattlesnakes so it's now closed.

Watching your work closely...

That's strange, I've never heard of earthquakes happening around the north pole before.

Could someone post the earthquakes that have happened in last few hours. I can't access the site. Thanks for the help.
