Anyway, after checking other webicorders than YMR (I didn't catch the earthquake on GEE in real time, where I could have looked at many seismic stations together) I realized that there were actually two earthquakes, a small one, still unreported but probably in the M1.x range, then the M2.5 one, so the reported magnitude might be correct. On YMR webicorder it looked like a single earthquake.

Things had calmed down a bit, but then two more in the past half hour or so. My guess is about 1.8 so we won't see them on the map for a while.

I don't remember last winter's swarm being all in one place like this. Generally in the Lake area, but not one right on top of the other.

Another 2.5. (Can't even see it on the webicorders yet)

2.5 2010/01/18 16:00:14 44.565 -110.972 9.0 15 km ( 9 mi) SE of West Yellowstone, MT

Just before that there was another one of those long rumblings that was probably noise in the park. Picked up on multiple webicorders, YPK made it look like a long quake but that station has been borked for a while now, probably due to wind. Everywhere else just a lot of fuzz.

Edited to say: The quake that occurred at 16:00 appears a little later on the webicorder because it jumped a line or two. That black line actually came before the red and the blue. Since then there's been at least a 1.x.

could we say that the edge of the caldera is also the weakest spot of it?
I can imagine someting seeing the surface falling in the empty chamber after the outburst then

For those of you who use Firefox browser, there is a neat little add-0n called
eQuake which sits on your Task bar and gives you up to the minute details of quakes going on around the world. You can set the size of the quakes you are looking for and it informs you immediately of where it is and with a click of your mouse you can get all the details on it. You can even set it to shake you monitor when the quake occurs.

A nifty tool for those interested in earthquakes.

Yes the caldera rim is a weak spot and in the simulations of an eruption developed by the geologists, they show the rim rupturing and then the whole rim opening up like a zipper. Then when enough magma is displaced, the roof falls into the void.

But the rim is not the only weak spot. There is the fault from the earlier caldera running throught the lake. And there are spots were the magma is only 5km from the surface. This would be considered a weak spot as well because the crust is heated and this could cause a rupture.

In December there were about 70 quakes for the month. At the moment, this swarm has produced about 70 quakes of various magnitudes. And it doesn't seem like it's slowing or ready to stop talking.

When I made my prediction on this thread on Dec. 29th, saying there would be a similiar situation to the swarm last year, I also made another prediction. I realized that even if I was correct and a swarm began on the weekend of the 15th- 17th, I knew it would be ignored and disputed. That prediction seems to also to have come true. Sunday morning when it seemed quiet, I was relieved because I would not have to go through the ordeal of trying to convince anyone that I understand what's happeining at Yellowstone. It's like a bad disaster movie where no one listens to the guy who's stumbled upon a developing phenomenon and no one believes them until it's obvious, and that only happens at the most dramatic moment. If the moon has enough gravitational power to change the shape of the earth and change the levels of entire oceans, then why can't it change the movement of liquids in crust and in the magma chamber. I say it has, and this swarm, and last year swarms, which happened when the moon was in a similiar cycle. This is strong evidence supporting my prediction and hypothesis.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Shirakawa, I value your opinion. What do you say about my claim that I knew there was going to be a swarm? You said at one point after one of the earlier large quakes that it would stop. When you said that, I knew there were many many more to come. I said Jan. 15-17. The first quake in the YMR area happened on the 15th, there were half a dozen on the 16th, and the big show started on the 17th. I don't know how I could have been any more specific.

Even though I knew my prediction would be accurate, and I knew that it would be dismissed and ignore, it still doesn't help quell my frustrations.
No one believed the trappers who came back to civilization with stories about the amazing landscape we now call Yellowstone. I understand, it's only human nature.

Do I resign myself to the fact that no one will ever believe my story? Or do I keep calling out in the wilderness.

Another "big" earthquake just occurred, seems the biggest so far since the beginning of this new swarm. Probably M2.9-3.0.

EDIT
UUSS lists M3.0 for now:

3.0 2010/01/18 11:03:14 44.562N 110.978W 10.1 15 km ( 9 mi) SE of West Yellowstone, MT

Wow who could have known that this was going to be a substantial swarm the moment the first quake hit? Who could have known that is wasn't going to stop after the first few big ones?

Oh how I dreaded the thought that my prediction fell on a weekend. I knew I wasn't going get any streaming data on magnitude updated every five minutes like the claim still posted on the most recent map. We wouldn't have had any confirmation of quakes had it not been for the fact that quakes 2.5+ aren't channeled through the YVO and UofU. That 3.7 which was downgraded to a .08 was fun to watch wasn't it?

If you want to know why they don't post quakes on weekends anymore, like they did when Shirakawa first started watching Yellowstone, and up until the large swarm last year, then I will tell you. It's about spin.

Here's the page way back where we discussed it.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

One of the ways I could have been more specific about my prediction would be say that this swarm would be slightly smaller due to the fact the the extreme distances were at the maxiums last year and this year the distances were slightly less. Curious note. If you use my calculations, Dec. 2102 does not have similiar apogees or perigees in relationship with full moon and new moon. But I've never bought into the 2012 thing, I just think it's the last day on a calender like Dec. 31. It was an interesting Dec. 31st this year. That big blue moon so close to earth and New's Year Eve to make it special. I watched it with amazement. Man did the last decade suck.

I'm so happy to see the first thread that got me to join ATS is still thriving and full of great information and all the usual rancor and passion. Thanks to everyone who truly does put an effort in here and who appreciates the science. I have lots of reading to do. It's been several interesting days. : )

Thanks Shirakawa for the graph. And from the other stations it is apparent that the uplift has slowed. But in general there is no real subsidence. It is fair to say that at this moment Yellowstone's caldera is undulating and not stalled as I earlier described it.

There is only one thing to say about the most recent map of quakes at Yellowstone. It is not an accurate. It is not correct. Information is not posted to the public in the manner stated on the website. It is not the truth. Altering preception is dishonest.

Look at this page and know that it does not have all the data. There is information missing. There are omissions on this test. The schools these scientist attended would fail them if they handed in papers that had this blank spots.

www.seis.utah.edu...

It's half way through a Monday and still the full scope of this signifigant event is not available to the general public. The average person would not know how to read the webicorders without researching it to learn it like I had to. So to a casual observer it may not look very active. Except that red 3.1.

I still don't understand why (wait, maybe yes...) other smaller earthquakes aren't being added, though.

Just wanted to make a post as I will be able to find this thread again easier, wheuu, yes i am here to see what the resident information specialists have to say about the feeling i have in the pit of my stomach.

Is it possible for the Yellowstone region to have a major EQ, say above 6. and not have the caldera blow to life killing levels?

I very much agree that everything is interconnected. From the activity in the ring of fire, the Haiti EQ and the potential for a major one in Yellowstone, but does it always spell doom for the entire country, planet?

Please spell it out for us lamans.
