BTW this

quake.wr.usgs.gov...

seems to have a more complete EQ List than this

earthquake.usgs.gov...

if it matters...

Evenin all!
Just wanted to jump in with a few things.

Firstly, sorry quakewatcher for the snub - It was late and I'd had enough. I was actually in agreement with you on some points. Really could have done without the pimple pic, I think I had a dream about it

Nonetheless, that wasn't a good way to greet a new member.

To RF and our Wind theorists- Yes, another wonderful windy day. We only had 1 tractor-trailer blown over on Outer Drive. You guys really ought to spend a few months in Wyoming around this time of year to appreciate just how bad it is. This time of year everyone gets just a bit 'edgy' because they're tired of it. We say that if it stopped, everyone would probably fall down.

To my friends on the coast, haven't changed my mind and after the last couple of hours I'm sure you agree. Alrightey, back on track. Lay some good stuff on me.

I realize this post has no useful information but I'll be contributing more. Had to take a self-imposed timeout.

Holy cow!

It looks like it's all available if you know what you want and how to request it properly.

There are some tutorials about it all, which is great. For example:

www.iris.edu...

Just briefly browsing that tells me that I'd need to spend some serious time just figuring out what, exactly, I'd want.

Amazing!

It's very hard, raw files use a format which WILL need some amount of programming to be used. I originally wanted to get raw seismic data to create sound files from them, but in the end I gave up. I really hope you or Thought Provoker manage to understand how this data works and how to use it, there are just too many uses to list!

Guys I been thinking. Oh, Oh, right?
No seriously, we have done the first step! Predicting where!
Now, how strong, how long, etc..
Maybe if we can keep from shakin' the nest we won't get stung!
Minimum we would have a fairly reliable way to predict enough to warrant action via the media or maybe spark someones interest to help that has the power. I dont care if someone wants to profit off of it, lets just get a system in place that we can trust and save some lives with! (including our loved ones and our own) I give the current system some of the credit, I just dont trust some of the people.
I sure would like to see us continue with the water flow outputs from all sources too. Maybe the new guy, thought provoker I believe could scrape together charts that are customized for what we need. Shirakawa and others have done a fantastic job there too!
Without going there and gathering uncorruptable evidence ourselves,
it is hard to rely on any official reports to backup our research.

I had some links to some testing reports but the window closed
and lost them for now. Just typical net stuff anyway.

I wanted to put this up while it was still on my mind.
Anyway, I have something unique to share with you.
Pictures of little known features I was advised to watch also.
Stream flows or various other changes. However these are
secluded and isolated spots and without going there physically
it would be hard to know for sure.
It would have to be someone who works there year round
that would be aware of these ongoing changes. hint, hint!
I'll see if the links will work and catch up again!
Thank you for your patience with my quip anecdotes and
sometimes long winded banter. D

www.yellowstone.net...

After posting this once I read you guys already found
more sources of good info!!! Kicks!
Thanks everyone and ATS crew!

Whatever happened to the right of free speech in this country. to be prosecuted for stating your beliefs is quite absurd. yes, maybe yes there is a conspiracy here not only to silence one individual but to disinform the masses.

Free speech does not include impersonating a Federal official, using the USGS logo and more.
When I first saw his warning I immediately thought, "jeez, this guy is nuts for using the USGS logo as his warning header." I new he would be headed for trouble.

If he would have left out the logo and said IMO a bit more he would be protected to speak freely.

If he did it from a strange place in his head, that's one thing. Society has fumbling ways of dealing with that. If he knows it's going to happen, or even if he just sincerely and incorrectly believes it, based on his analysis, he's got the high moral ground and would be in the right to do anything to get people to take him seriously.

There's also the possibility that he's just another willing bit player assigned a role in a game being played on our heads, for reasons entertained here and elsewhere. All of reality is up for grabs, please take notice. If global warming ain't real, ain't nuthin' real.

Lawsy, Lawsy, I thought I was posting on the "other" thread!

By the way, I have calculated that the sum of the energy of every earthquake occurred in the latest Yellowstone earthquake swarm is roughly equivalent to that of a SINGLE earthquake of roughly 4.95 magnitude! Shocking, isn't it?

Now I understand why some geologists said we should start worrying only when we see multiple magnitude 4.5+ earthquakes occurring in a short time.

Holy Moly! Are you serious? Is that just since what, Dec. 26th?
Hundreds of quakes! Wowza, what a perspective.
Almost can't believe it.

Whew!!

This thread has been a marathon run for me. I've learned a great deal thus far about a subject I've had keen interest in since I was a child. There is simply not enough time in a single day to absorb all of this.

Now, I'm in agreement with RF and others that live here in Wyoming. The wind blows just about anywhere you go in this state. And it DOES blow!

Two stations that I've been connecting to so far, are LKWY and Cody (TAHI8A)...

Interesting stuff, to say the least...

Anyway, I have a couple of questions and a comment"

1: In the event that the dome beneath Yellowstone Lake bursts in a hydrothermal explosion, what might we experience here in Sheridan? (Earthquake Magnetude, debris, gases, etc.) We are about 250 miles away.

2: In a blow similar to that which occured 640,000 years ago, How long would it take for us to feel the effects at this distance?

Comment: I've been going to Yellowstone for 40 years now and it is a forever changing environment. Even before it was classified as a 'super volcano' I've felt this place to potentially be an extremely volatile piece of real estate. I'm a microwave technician by trade but I also enjoy the outdoors and wild life in particular. It's my gut feeling that when I see or hear about the animal population leaving the Yellowstone area in droves, I just might be a bit concerned, if you know what I mean...

Regards, Ric..

BTW, hats off to some wonderful minds that have participated in this very informative thread...

Ric...

Hanging is too good for him.
Shooting him would be the waste of a bullet.
I say we put him in a cage sitting in Yellowstone Park and leave him there, feeding optional.

Sitting that dude on a geyser might be a better way.

What happened to the Lakeway helicorder? It's been down since about 5:00 tonight.

Here's another animated GIF of all of the helicorders for Yellowstone, but this one is from December 30, 2008. That's a day with some actual earthquake activity.

This gives a little perspective, I think. Plus, it's fun to see this one because there's a lot more "real" activity in it.

farm4.static.flickr.com...

For this one, the timing is set to 30 milliseconds per chart page.

Thanks for this file.
This should be enough to convince people that proper seismic activity will show at about the same time on two or more webicorders (depending of course on their distance and sensitivity).

BHE is for East and West Motion 0.00 is centered a +=E movement or -=W movement from center

same for BHN +=N -=S

BHZ is for Vertical Motion

The Scale on the Left is the Scale of movement
nm Nano (smaller)
micro (greater)

Is this right?
That's my interpretation at least..
and I'm not even sure why some readings are centered as in movement above the 0.00 scale center

What would be fantastic would be to have the actual RAW data that was used to create those charts in the first place. Then it'd be fairly easy to write a program to re-graph the data at whatever re-scaling we wanted to apply. But without the raw data, it's hard to do.

Surprisingly, raw earthquake data is freely available to the public from IRIS (Incorporated Research Institutes for Seismology), but it's not very easy to manipulate. That GEE program many people here are using, to display seismograph traces, downloads streaming raw earthquake data from IRIS' real time servers for example. If Thought Provoker with his programming skills is able to figure out how both IRIS EQ realtime and archived data work he could greatly improve his site.

I've tried it a few days ago.
It's hard to use and has got a few bugs.
GEE is way more intuitive and quicker to set up... when its server connection works.

Oh boy I am glad to hear from you! Nothing for an hour on the board and no data from VASE - I thought it had blown!!!!

You are right about the setup - definitely not intuitive, but if I can ever get a data connection I understand that it can strean ascii text live, which I don't think you can do on GEE.

I don't know if you saw my post about the deletions. Do you think removing 400 (of which YW ws 154) is usual?
