Haven't had the chance to catch up on the last few pages, so hopefully this isn't repeating what's been discussed:

Thanks to seismic monitoring equipment installed around the park in recent years, scientists quickly determined magmatic movement as a cause

But that doesn't answer some intriguing questions as to what the event signifies for the world's most famous volcanic region. The underground movement of superheated water is the suspected cause, but regular old tectonic activity could be playing a role as well.

According to Smith's research, the caldera floor has been rising at an accelerated rate of seven centimeters a year since 2004, but he is unsure whether any connection exists between caldera movement and earthquake swarms.

Full story

The study is still ongoing, and always will be in the case of Yellowstone. They're still using the words "unsure", which isn't exactly assuring.

Thank you,

I've also discovered the beauty of the ignore list in using this site. I'm maintaining the maximum ten just for this thread alone...after this many pages I do know who will get in the way of me going through useful info fast if I need to.

the first post of the following thread might still be useful to newcomers here.

Now that this thread has turned me on to GEE I am finally over the thrill of the wavy lines moving across the screen and decided I needed to figure out if I could discern anything from all that information.

I generally monitor the LKWY site along with 3 surroundings sites, Cody (TA H18A), Grant Village (TA H17A) and West Yellowstone (TA H 16A).

If and when all four sites indicate activity, I figure it is important. But to further my understanding of how local events differ from distant events. I researched 2 known past EQ events that all recorders noted.

I took the 1/1/09 EQ (3.0) that was located right under LKWY and the Costa Rica EQ from today (6.1 I think). These show how a local EQ differs from the distant EQ.

The first pic is the LKWY EQ

picasaweb.google.com...

Notice the amplitude on the LKWY, Lake site, peaking over 600 m/sec as it rumbled directly under it. You can also see the timing differentials as the wave propagates.

The second pic is the Costa Rica EQ

picasaweb.google.com...

Much more drawn out, all recorders about the same amplitude.

Just a start, much more to learn.

geogeek....thanks so much for continuing to read and post here. We are all learning so much from you and so many others.

I have 2 questions.

1. how can all the helicorder readings from the past 2 days be contributed to "wind" when so many look just like the readings from the official EQ swarm?

2. what would cause so many of the readings from the Live Internet Seismic Server to s how something that looks pretty large at the same time spanning the globe around 1900 hours??? From DisneyWorld to South Dakota to Barbadoes to Missouri to New Mexico, etc etc

link for this is Live Seismic Server

thanks again for all the great info and insight

I see, Geogeek. Many thanks!
A week is better than zippo, I would have to say!
And long enough to save a million lives I imagine.
We might not need Bernard after all, pretty soon!

Glad you got a chuckle!

Now we need someone to donate some of that fancy drillin' stuff
so we can see whats up...or in this case, whats down!
Dont suppose we could get a posse headed that way?

Hi Folks, I have not had time to catchup yet and I wanted to lay this one on you.

Since the start of the year over 400 EQ events that had appeared on lists have been deleted - deleted not revised (I track those also). Not only that but 154 of them were Yellowstone events. That seems high as a proportion. I do recall someone on the thread saying that they have been adding earlier ones so what is going on? The largest of these deleted start 2.5, 2.4, 2.3 and then on down to 1.0 which is the lowest magnitude I collect on a daily basis.

Does this seem unusual?

Edit: Typos!

Ask, and you shall receive. The 'daythumbs' page has a new option now, "Layout." This lets you switch between the rigid table (in order by station name) and the view you suggested. I only spent about an hour on it, but I think you'll find it handy. Now, if only I could put a Yellowstone map as its background...

Guess I should say more than that for my first post. So, hi, everyone. Took a while to get to page 281, but I made it. I have to say, I'm impressed with the level of expertise evidenced by this thread. It's brought experts of all kinds together, so here's one more. I bring data manipulation to the table. Not, like, higher-order statistical analysis, but presentation. Mapping it, making charts, sortable tables, animations, Google Earth maps (in 3D), whatever. Almost whatever. I'm hardly a master of the art, but I have a good grip on it, I think. Enough to let me write a few toys, all of which are yours to use. If you have requests, I'll try to see if I can't somehow make it happen, within reason; I do have a day job (application developer) and thus little time. I'm supposed to be creating pages in Joomla right now, in fact (shudder), so I guess that'll do it for the First Post. I'll just provide a little tidbit on the way out, if you promise to go easy on it. There's a cable modem between you and me and these images can be over a meg in size. I've tried optimizing the animated GIFs, but I guess Gifsicle just sucks at that...

Look down, near the bottom.

Hey guys thought I'd throw this up. Was emailed to me.
Someone mentioned the lake that belched out the co2.
Maybe we can find more of these patterns.

This interesting article of a lake in China may be relevant.

There is one thing I do not see with the wind idea. I live and work out side in a mountain type terrain.

Even when it is windy it is not steady, especially in the mountains. It is breezy with often times very sharp gust. They come and go very quickly.

The graphs do not reflect that.

If you listen to the wind in the mountains you can hear it coming.

You would see that in the graphs.

That is the question that bugs me too - it seems that the claim is being made that the energy sets up harmonic type vibrations in the ground, so would last past the gusts . . . I don't know. . .

Can some of you clever people out there help me with this?

I am trying to understand why these 3 recorders - all part of LKWY - show such different traces, or are they all elements of the same signal? This is a shot from a 1 hour video of these recorders that I made this morning from GEE, but it is way to large to post.

Edit: It is a big picture and only part of it is showing.

Hanging is too good for him.
Shooting him would be the waste of a bullet.
I say we put him in a cage sitting in Yellowstone Park and leave him there, feeding optional.

Let's not go there. Please!
If the thing would have went off, he would be a hero. He gambled, (yes stupidly), and lost. Leave it at that.

Whatever happened to the right of free speech in this country. to be prosecuted for stating your beliefs is quite absurd. yes, maybe yes there is a conspiracy here not only to silence one individual but to disinform the masses.

BHE is for East and West Motion 0.00 is centered a +=E movement or -=W movement from center

same for BHN +=N -=S

BHZ is for Vertical Motion

The Scale on the Left is the Scale of movement
nm Nano (smaller)
micro (greater)

Is this right?
That's my interpretation at least..
and I'm not even sure why some readings are centered as in movement above the 0.00 scale center

He is not being prosecuted for stating his beliefs. If he had put up the notice at his website and clearly identified it as his opinion and statement that would have been fine. He went out of his way to create a page that looked like a USGS notice, appropriating their official logo, including some of their info, and formatting his text to look like one of their notices.

It wasn't what he was saying that got him into trouble, it was how he chose to say it.

Edited to add: For those who have posted wondering if he'd still be prosecuted if Yellowstone blew (which from the looks of it could possibly not happen for another 1,000 yrs) - that's really irrelevant. Impersonating a public official is impersonating a public official whether or not you are right, particularly in a time of emergency. If he had something legitimate to say he should have owned his own credentials and spoken up as himself. I can't find any evidence he's even got an advanced degree in geology.

If you look across all the feeds it looks like the wind event is or has ended.

You can really see that some stations are very sensitve to it. The only thing thta puzzels me on LKWY is that today's wind interference looked nothing like past wind interference on the same station. Maybe the wind was coming in from 380 degrees today.
