ive been watching main usgs site for years now, about 10 or so, i have seen them remove a few, but its rare to see.
But i wonder since the are just going through all the data, i wonder if some were echo's of another quake and picked up by other sensors and they are just double checking and weeding them out to get a accurate account.

It is quiet on here today, as well as the graphs.

Excellent excellent post. About all the quakes = one 4.95 quake. I had no idea the richter scale, erm, scaled, in such a steep manner. Really goes to show how a good understanding of mathematics can put things into perspective. Wish I would have paid more attention in school.

I've been lurking, read pretty much the entire thread. I don't have anything of value to add, just wanted to thank everyone for the experience and their info. I'm sure the other lurkers thank you, as well. Heh.

I don't know about EQ deletions. It may be that as they get reviewed twice or more times by geologists their actual location may be changed or they their magnitude downgraded to a value smaller than 1.0. The USGS website doesn't list earthquakes under 1.0 magnitude.
On the ANSS earthquake catalog, from what I'm seeing, each day more and more earthquakes occurred under Yellowstone Lake are reviewed and added, but from the almost 700 listed (in the area I selected) only about 100 are under 1.0 magnitude.
It could also be that some earthquakes don't meet USGS quality standards on accuracy and amount of available data and therefore get deleted after a while.

If you're talking of this page instead... here earthquakes older than 168 hours (1 week) get automatically deleted from the list.

Holy cow!

It looks like it's all available if you know what you want and how to request it properly.

There are some tutorials about it all, which is great. For example:

www.iris.edu...

Just briefly browsing that tells me that I'd need to spend some serious time just figuring out what, exactly, I'd want.

Amazing!

great ,,,,,

Too bad, as there's been a micro earthquake today at 6:39 MST, probably occurred in Yellowstone lake near LKWY. Some stations have picked it.
Maybe it's down for mantainance (remember the weird signals?).

A small earthquake occurred at 7:41, the first real one in a few days, perhaps.
Again, by judjing the intensities and arrival times detected at various stations, I'd say it was about where the last earthquake swarm ended, just beneath LKWY. Maybe something is about to start again? A number of micro-EQs already began to occur in the past few hours (check YLA mainly, as LKWY is offline).

Those also have a small wind generator to take over if that happens. Quite a few of them have the wind generator...since its quite valuable due to all the wind here in Wyoming.

Cheers!!!!

Why are earthquakes always downgraded, never upgraded?

Why can't they catch it right the first time?

No I am talking about actual deletions from the list. Here is the sequence.

(First off I have written a program to do all this by the way) The current 7 day list is downloaded and imported. The beginning and ending dates of the list are recorded and then all EQs in the database are checked. New ones are added, revisions based on the version number are up dated, duplicates are ignored.

What is left over is events that exists in my database, but do not exist in the dataset just downloaded. Since the program is only checking dates that exist in the data-set it cannot inadvertently remove ones that are no longer included because they are older than 7 days. I only added this bit a couple of days ago, and reloaded the data-sets from 01/01/2009.

Bearing in mind this only checks the dates in the data-set, 400 have been removed.

I thought this strange, so I downloaded worldwide eqs from 01/01/2009 from ANSS and spot checked around 100 values. The ones the program removed were NOT in the ANSS data-set.

I have put the list on 4shared as an .xls file so you can see them.

www.4shared.com...

If you feel like verifying my data please do so. I would be delighted to be told I am an idiot and got the programming wrong!

Yesterday the program detected 1 deletion, and so far today none.

They do get upgraded as well:

00086187 ak 1 09/01/2009 03:04 65.3332 -152.0336 2.6 13 8.20 northern Alaska

00086187 ak 1 09/01/2009 03:04 65.3714 -151.4644 2.4 9 14.90 northern Alaska

The lower on is the first version and the upper on the latest (despite the fact that the version numbers are the same)

Edit: I seem to have a sticky e. Painful!

Yes, but 99% of the time they are downgraded. All over the world. For years...

Breaking NEWS!!! Chris Saunders is going to be charged by the FEDS for the "FALSE EVACUATION ORDER" he issued about Yellowstone.

www.billingsgazette.net...

From the link given above

Conspiracy theorists said that if an actual eruption were eminent, the government would not alert the public.

I wonder if they were talking about ATS????

Here are some quotes from this very thread. Just for 1 of many examples.
Link to ATS post

USGS, FEMA and Homeland security would naturally try to avert panic...and through those "good" intentions may, (again a big IF) IF Yellowstone releases, put hundreds of thousands at risk.

Yes, because you know all us theorists here theorize that if any immanent disaster occurs:

First they would have to disarm us.

Give the confiscated weapons to someone else.

FEMA would round us up into their brand new railroad prison shackle boxcars.

Transport us like cattle into the nearest FEMA Prison Concentration Camp.

Where the New World Order takes effect.

Did I miss anything????

Oh yeah!

Meanwhile, the Galactic Federation Light ship of Blossom Goodchild finally shows up late and we miss it because we are in FEMA camps!

Where we remain prisoners until Planet X arrives.

For possible destruction of the earth.

But our tax dollars were finally put to good use and our government already has coffins for each of us. - Whew! At least I don't have to buy a coffin when I die.

Anything else????

To RF and our Wind theorists- Yes, another wonderful windy day. We only had 1 tractor-trailer blown over on Outer Drive. You guys really ought to spend a few months in Wyoming around this time of year to appreciate just how bad it is. This time of year everyone gets just a bit 'edgy' because they're tired of it. We say that if it stopped, everyone would probably fall down.

[edit on 9-1-2009 by sageturkey]

in Lethbridge & Fort McLeod, Alberta (just to the North of Montana/Alberta border) ... is in a major wind channel though the mountains ... and a MAJOR wind power generation area... they say that they spend so much time leaning against the wind, that they have one leg longer than the other ... they would probably agree with U about falling over if the wind ever stopped ....

*LMFAO* Oh ...oh that was good. Thank you for bringing a smile to my day.

: @ PUTERMAN: As for the removal of EQ's...could it be that they were incorrect data coming onto the charts? EQ's registering from other EQ's, mine blasts, etc...anything that would be taken off that list? They do review all the data by analyzing other forms of activity that would come up on those readings, only after the reading has been initially taken. Or am I missing something about your theory here?

I did, however, notice someone posted a current link that stated there have been 900 EQ's @ Yellowstone since Dec. 28th...

Just in case anyone is having trouble keeping up with this long thread. There is a way to bookmark a thread exactly where you left off.

Instruction found here

That way you can easily go to where you last were and read on from there.

Hey everyone, sorry for dropping out of the discussion but have been busy doing some side research. I am going to take this opportunity to learn to develop for the Android platform (right now it is only on the T-Mobile G1) and I wanted to solicit some ideas from you all as to what might make a good mobile earthquake monitoring solution.

First...No Expectations! This is not going to come out tomorrow or perhaps even not within a month, I am still very "green" on this platform.

OK, here is what I have thought of so far...

1 - Must have integration with Google Maps and GPS.
2 - Must vibrate the phone when a new quake appears based on user threshold for alerts (All, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc...)
3 - Must be able to pull up a browser to related sites (USGS)
4 - Must be able to tie into Technorati Blogosphere to search blogs on activity.
5 - Must be able to search You Tube and Wiki for information around the quakes and locations.
6 - Record and Track to Google Calendar
7 - Send Email, SMS, or MMS.
8 - Link to USGS "Did You Feel It"
9 - Integrate camera for those that may be in the vicinity and set up an Internet Site repository back-end server.
10 - Coordinate with other android users of the program that may be in the immediate area of a mag 6 or greater Quake.

I welcome additional ideas and would very much welcome anyone that has Android development experience to help collaborate on this beast. Please U2U me with ideas or ideas for support.

Hugs,

Maeve
