People, I've been watching this cam for days and it is automatic. I have never seen it "pan" as some have said. There is no operator! It is automatically updated every 30 seconds. One person said they have seen it mounted on a tree there. It has never moved since I have been watching. Ol faithfull is on the right side of the shot, obscured by steam right now. All other cams show pics of previous days. By the way it has been spurting steam almost constantly since yesterday!

There are two cameras. One updates every 30 seconds and the other is live streaming. The one that is being discussed as frozen is the live streaming camera.

Here is a the last nearby earthquake to Yellowstone which was a 4.2 in NE Nevada. Look at this map and than look at the map of the hot spot map, it appears the NE Nevada earthquake could be related to the magma substructure! I think things are beginning to stir once again after a brief quiet period.

First Papua gets hit by an earthquake, then a big wave swamps them. Poor buggers can't catch a break!

I find it somewhat interesting that this weather map shows moving clouds except over the Yellowstone area. But, it is -14 there and any warm moist air would instantly show as mist/steam, whatever it really is called.

Also the weather report is from like a week ago shown on the cam page. It is put out by the host company back east! It is NOT 31 degrees there right now!!! WTF? Yes this is relevant, we will have a real time view when you know what hits the fan!

It is very cold in Yellowstone right now. Fog would be expected near the Geysers...

Same reason why, during the cold months, you can spot caves on hillsides by looking for fog. It is the warmer air inside the cave mixing with the colder air outside.

What's also strange, is that the live stream is going, but the picture is frozen.

Not only did it pan, it was moving up and down. I was on the OF then there was another view later. It definitly moved several times. I wonder if you are watching the same cam? I am using the one linked from USGS. I'll find it and let you know. There is another there that just shows still pics as well. At least it looks as if the snow is melting off the lens.

I ahve been watching it off and on for the past 7 days and it most definitely pans and zooms in and out so someone is controlling it remotely.

Exactly. Its just like standing outside in the cold and breathing, your exhaled warm air mixes with the cold air and wala, fog.

Cheers!!!!

I posted this over at the "look out" thread also... quake.utah.edu... several in the last hour alone. One appeared to be near the 4.0 range.

It panned...I watched it.

Are y'all talking about the same camera? There are two. One appears to be locked on Old Faithful and provides still shots that are refreshed every 20-30 seconds. The other one provides streaming video and does pan around to look at other geysers, wildlife, and scenery.

I saw it pan too. I see no movement whatever on the streaming images now. It does look like the fog has moved off. I think this is just a malfunction. Maybe I'm naive.

Statistics show that there has been no marked increase in earthquakes in the past year. The only thing that is remarkable is the increase in deaths by earthquake in 2008. I was quite shocked by the number. Only 2004 has had more deaths.

I posted this back on p.174.
Pan down just a bit to a graph and scroll down farther to some charts.

That is the link to the streaming video. It does pan and zoom. It is not always on, and right now it's frozen on the picture and is broke down.

Follow the other link to get the still camera

Maybe the camera operator is drunk, it just panned and zoomed but at nothing of interest. Its almost as if the camera has been turned away from the geysers for some reason.

Have a look www.nps.gov...

I don't need to get over anything. I'm just sharing the info in case it's of some use. The interpretation of those images is entirely up to you.

PS: I added a couple of images to my post for the record.

Cheers.
