There are a few smaller steam vents/geysers not far off near Old F.
Maybe there is a wind shift and it is blowing their steam towards Old F.

Knowing several people who have worked for the US Forest Service it just occurred to me that the people maintaining the stations and webcams might be low grade forrest rangers...or equally like and increasingly is the case with our underfunded national forests this past few years, these people may very well be recently hired private contractors. Don't laugh, after 20, and 30 and 35 years many people I know who worked for the US Forest Service are now private contractors.
Under GWB our national forests have been privatized. Yeah, go ahead and imagine all that.

Also since most of the equipment installed at these monitoring sites is purchased by the government it may not be the best gear available it was just the lowest bid or a company affiliated with the outgoing VP.

morning all - can someone post the link to Robert Smith article where he talks about world wide earthquakes may be connected?

and on GEE things seem to be more active than on Utah - maybe it's my settings?

Does anyone know if there is a way to name what level of plus or minus we're on and if so - what is a good level to watch because now I'm bouncing off the top and the bottom -

thanks for any tips

I was part of the Old Faithful discussion yesterday. All I can say is that this output seems to be at least double anything yesterday. Could be temperature related, I guess, but that degree of venting was absent. The fact that the camera is trained on that one vent as opposed to panning like it did constantly yesterday suggests that the camera operator is equally impressed by that constant activity.

RSOE is saying 4.3 and volcanic activity nearby. I know they are not completely accurate.

Can this be close, I don't see anything on the USGS

hisz.rsoe.hu...

And volcanic activity in Montana.

I have not figured out what the connection is between the water data coming from Tantalus Creek at Norris Junction, YNP and the quakes we have been seeing around the lake but, one observation that I have made is this...the quake activity was the strongest when the water temperature from that monitor was at it's highest. Current Water Temp is about 10.5 C from the latest reading, when it has reached 17-18 C we have been seeing a lot of activity. I think there is a pattern here and something to keep focusing on. Current temperature is trending up also.

that information is a week old and even then it was still level green

Yes and they will probably take it off this list too

And on another subject; everyone talking about quakes in other parts of the world causing ones in Yellowstone should read this article from a few years ago

I found this graph for LKWY

mbmgquake.mtech.edu...

The one that I had been following is this one.

www.seis.utah.edu...

If it's the same recorder, why is it so different?
I've been following this and the other thread from day one, maybe I missed something. If I did I appoligize. If I didn't, then what the heck is going on?

They come and within 2/3 minutes they are gone.

Situation Update No. 5
On 04.01.2009 at 05:38 GMT+2

At 11:32 this morning, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake was reported 38 miles east southeast of West Yellowstone, Mont., in Yellowstone National Park — the latest in a swarm of earthquakes that has hit the area in the past week. The 3.5 tremor was followed this afternoon by a 3.2 magnitude quake at 12:40 p.m. and a 3.0 temblor at 1:15 p.m.

Why wasn't this posted here:

earthquake.usgs.gov...

and here?

earthquake.usgs.gov...

Two are listed as tremor and one as quake.

Nobody has any thoughts on this? I can't believe USGS is being remiss on this. I think its an intentional withholding to avoid any panic. Missing three close 3.5, 3.2 and 3.0 EQs is whack.

Just found this updated info from RSOE under the "Situation Update" box:
RSOE EDIS

"On 04.01.2009 at 05:38 GMT+2

At 11:32 this morning, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake was reported 38 miles east southeast of West Yellowstone, Mont., in Yellowstone National Park — the latest in a swarm of earthquakes that has hit the area in the past week. The 3.5 tremor was followed this afternoon by a 3.2 magnitude quake at 12:40 p.m. and a 3.0 temblor at 1:15 p.m. The swarm of more than 500 tremors is the largest series of back-to-back quakes to hit the area in years, according to scientists...."

"Professor Robert B. Smith, a geophysicist at the University of Utah and one of the leading experts on earthquake and volcanic activity at Yellowstone, said that the swarm is of keen interest to scientists. "It's not business as usual," said Smith. "This is a large earthquake swarm, and we've recorded several hundred. We are paying careful attention. This is an important sequence."

However, the observatory said there is some potential for explosions and that earthquakes may continue and increase in intensity. Joe Moore, director of the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security, said his office is tracking the events at Yellowstone on a minute-by-minute basis. "It's being followed very closely," said Moore. He said his office has evaluated the emergency plans — which includes evacuations — developed by Teton County, where Jackson Hole is located, and Park County, where Cody is located. Should a destructive earthquake or volcanic explosion occur, he said his agency would assist those counties as well as communities in Fremont County, which includes the Wind River Indian Reservation. He said the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Denver is closely monitoring the seismic activity in Yellowstone.

That sounds a bit more serious than what they have officially been saying.
