Not purposely drifting off topic here, but I did build such a setup for a weather camera mounted on top of a 20 story building for a tv station's weather casts. The camera had an enclosure, but the front would always get water droplets or dirt on it. So I made a small wiper system that cleaned the front window of the enclosure and collected the rain water and pumped that through a small washer system to clear the dried up mud and dirt droplets on the window. This was in Midland Tx for KOSA TV I used to chief engineer for back in the mid 90's when I built the ICR relay for them. I still have the design specs.

Hmm, maybe I will pitch the idea to them so we all can get nice clean Old Faithful webcam video.

Cheers!!!!

I didnt see the steam 2 days ago..and you're really sure its a different color? I wonder if more sulfur would cause that, or if there is any significance in color change.

You should patent that idea! I know alot of cams I wish had those, including the one pointing at my neighbors house..Im kidding..seriously, I dont have that!

But back on topic, have there been any more Q's?
Will someone call me if there's any change, Im going for a nap, see ya all later

from the 21th december i been watching all this couple of days before this thread was opened.
I'm sure that the color from the right one on the cam is not like the past 2 weeks or so.
But some "friendly" poster say it's normal.

Listen i realy care about this , i'm almost on the other side of the world and some cold years is no problem and if i post something that in my eye seems as a sign and i get ...... strange people sometimes and i read every single post.

Well, if we see some guy run out and wipe the lens and wave at us, then we'll know for sure they are following this thread and we want the lens cleaned. I do see the camera moving up and down, very slowly and irritating so I can't look at it for too long at a time. This is the first time I have seen the geysers or Old Faithful, so I will reserve any comments about the steam, because I have no clue!

My GEE is getting alot of activity on 17 and LKWY and 18 seems to have quit. I am watching teh LKWY as this is usually the one with a pretty flat line and for awhile now, it's been doing alot.

I'm thinking we are in a lull right now - it will start again soon enough.

How much did it cost? I'd be willing to toss in some $$ to get a good clear picture..

The "noise", oh sorry Not Authorized, the "wind noise" has begun to pick back up. Very slight, but definitely there. What are the winds doing??? Have they increased. Anyone else seeing this new "noise" pick up?

Hey, you could be right, Im no expert. But I'd like to know if there's any significance to it. Sometimes all it takes is someone with a good eye

So things seemed to calm down greatly from last night into today. Does this mean it's over? Or will it start up again?

Because the last few times it started to die down, but then went back up again.
But it seems to be staying quite the most now then it has yet.

Any thoughts?

No "noise" at Upper falls though. I guess the wind doesn't blow there. Surely it has nothing to do with the fact that the YUF sensor is on the opposite side of a very deep canyon from the LKWY sensor. Maybe that canyon won't conduct the shallow "winds" that are causing this "noise"?!?!? Just a thought.

Coolvibe -

When super heated steam erupts into really cold, dense air, it tends to "fold over" on its self as it raises. This can create a shadow effect, thus giving the steam a smokey appearance, with variations in shading of greys.

I apologize if my last reply seemed harsh, it wasn't meant to be.

Granted.

Thing is I'm VERY well versed in the area. In the summer you can probably catch me calling Geyser eruptions over the radio channel us geyser gazers or see me sitting waiting patiently for an eruption of Giant Geyser.

Thing is, I went through this panicked garbage during the Norris Basin swarm and ground deformation in 2003. 100% of the people I talked to had NO idea how Norris worked, nor how normal it was for ground heating and deformation to happen during it's annual disturbance (that actually had declined prior). Read up the history of Pork Chop Geyser and the hydrothermal explosion, and the 2003 issue that happened on the trail less than 100 yards away from it. Yet, it became so super sensationalized that truth was lost and the public panicked.

It's a pet peeve of mine, as Yellowstone is by far my #1 vacation destination and favorite place on Earth. Theres no other place like it, and people should understand it as a treasure to humanity.

Call me defensive, but I HATE false information being spread around about it and the park.

I mean come on, new hot springs in Mammoth means it's going to erupt? It's on the other side of the park nearly 50 miles away from the swarm. Not to mention new springs happens quite frequently as it's soft dissolved limestone (not geyserite). One of the 1800 houses have a barrier blocking a 'new' hot spring that threatened to consume it in travertine. Or sulfur smell? You smell it the second you get into the park and is around all the fumeroles, hotsprings, mud pots and geysers. All very much normal, and there's no abnormal gas readings. The important H3E readings I've heard of show no fresh infusion of magma.

Too bad West Thumb Geyser basin doesn't have webcams, as I'd love to see if the swarm has reactivated any of the geysers there. For a matter of history, that basin has been 'dying' since the early 80's.

At best, we're looking at a hydro thermal explosion. It's happened around that area before, and in geologic terms it's freqent.

I was thinking about the fact that the activity has just stopped. I mean, it would make sense that there may be smaller quakes or events picked up on the USGS site since the last one listed. I am still wondering about how correct the reporting to the public is? I mean, we are seeing movement and such on GEE, granted not really big spikes, but movement for sure on LKWY, but that's about it.

Thanks to the poster who clued me in to the Mac "Tremor Skinner", I just got an alert to a 7.7 quake in Papua, Indonesia.

Just a lurker here, but am wondering if it will trigger any alarms, or set the earth ringing...

Old Faithful has erupted at 12:06 PM PT. Every 1.5 hours now or so it should be like clockwork.

Um. You've never been there either, have you?

Upper falls is the FIRST waterfall on the Yellowstone River and you can easily walk down the grade to it brink of the falls and is Handicap Accessible.

It's not at the end of the canyon. The lowest one is actually nicely named, the Lower Falls -- which drops 300 feet. It's at the top and is the beginning of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and starts it.

OK, once and for all!

It's the same effect with "grey" clouds on dark, stormy days. Clouds are made of water vapour, just the same as the steam from Old Faithful et al. Except perhaps with steam as oposed to water vapour, the droplet size is bigger leading to denser shadows.

People look up and say "Whoo! Look at that big black cloud!" But... All clouds are white as you'll know if you've ever flown, but they do cast shadows as you'll have seen on some google earth images. It's the shadows beneath the clouds that make them look dark and grey.

It's the same with the steam from these vents. Get the steam between you and the sun and it will cast a shadow beneath it making the steam look dark. Especially in contrast with the surrounding white snow. Get a lot of steam and it'll block out the light even more.

Fog and mist work the same way. Grey & dark in the fog, but climb a high enough hill or building to get above it and you'll see the fog as pristine white.

Early on in my weather geek days someone said in explanation of grey clouds "Think shadows!". The same applies to the images we're seeing from Yellowstone.

Think shadows!

I've seen your question twice and there are a number of posts that I have yet to read so I'm not sure if your question has been answered but there are 2 stories that I know of that may, at the very least, put you in a direction to search. The first is a volcano named Paricutin that rose out of a farmer's field as he was sowing in Mexico. The farmer's name was Dionisio Pulido. The date was February 20, 1943. The story is that he was sowing his fields when he felt trembling and witnessed the ground swell about 2 meters. Overnight, it had risen another 30 feet and the following day, another 120 feet. The second story, which should, perhaps, be the first, took place about 50 miles away from Pulido's farm, also in Mexico, in 1759. That volcano's name is Jurollo. Both volcanoes rose in an area known as the Mexican Volcanic Belt.
