heh.. what caused your issue was the arse Uncle Joe giving you coal... not the lie about Santa.

WRONG !! ....LEARN !! It was the orchastrated LIE !!!

An orchestrated lie is not a tangible item so it couldn't possibly have been the reason for your suffering. Unless it was the coal... that was pretty tangible.

Excuse my previous post I responded to the wrong retort....

Please understand there is no more an issue....I recall this event because I survived it along with several evants some of which challenged my very existance...We have furtile ground of which to learn from each other...Not withstanding huberous...

Your post mentioning that you and your son believe in Santa motivated me to reflect and start typing.

Thanks!

ok. i think this can be viewed as a mixed bag of emotions. but here is my take on it. i think it is very important that children use their imagination as much as possible. since you do not get to as adult. life does not always allow for that. and as adults we tend to forget what it is to think like a child. and the pure joy of an imagination. so, i was in kindergarten when some other kid told me that Santa was not real. i was crushed and went home in tears. so, at that point my mom had to tell something. so it went something like this...
there once was a man who would leave presents for children that had none, at their door on christmas eve. and that that man is no longer alive but that he lives on in our heart. and with keeping in the spirit of christmas, he will live forever.
so, with that in mind, to this day i do believe in Santa.

Some of these posts are mind numbing IMO. That is ok, the world needs scrooges too.

I have to agree. The ammount of topics that are broght up for both sides are amazing! This thread has gotten out of hand a few times, but it hits close to heart. It's honest.

I would not consider myself a scrooge. But then again, I don't really think Santa makes Christmas.

Yep... I had to assume that there was much more context than what was presented.

Though I will say, that I have found that the majority of my "psychic pain" has all been due to my reaction to my world and it's events. When I change my reaction, I change the experience.

This isn't to say that I don't get angry or hurt.. but today it is all temporary. Which, oddly enough I find lines up with some wisdom from "the bible". Paul recommends we get angry, but let it go by the end of the day.

Anyway.. I'm rambling now.

I wonder what Pegans are thinking about this post. They must feel jipped by not having Santa for Yule.

This is not a one liner. A one liner would be: "My girl's so fat, I met her at the MAcy's Parade, she was wearing ropes..."

You are not rambling....Never let the sun go down on your anger...Great experience....pleasure speaking with you...perhaps another day and another way...

Likewise!

It has been a great discussion. And I've got a lot out of it.

Thanks!

I think I can make a case that Santa Claus is real. Would the intelligent people here at ATS spend 19 pages (and still going) arguing about something that ISN'T real? Of course not!

==================

Besides, who wants to miss this childhood moment?

==================

Jesus vs. Santa:

Both are believed to have been real people who lived a long time ago.
Both are said to still be alive "in spirit" even though scientists are pretty sure they're physically dead.
Both perform miracles:

Jesus
Walks on water
Feeds a bunch of people with tiny amt. of food
Casts demons in to pigs

Santa
Flies through the air
Provides gifts for "all" of the world's children
Gets inside locked houses

No one knows what either one of them really looked like.
Both love children.
If you pray to Jesus, sometimes you get what you ask for. If you write a letter to Santa, sometimes you get what you ask for.
Jesus gives the gifts of forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life, Santa gives the gifts of joy, wonder, anticipation, excitement, and charity.
Jesus has disciples and followers. Santa has reindeer and elves.
Jesus has a throne in Heaven, Santa has a house & shop at the North Pole.

Hmm. Lots of similarities there.

===============

I never realized that Christmas and Santa Claus were such controversial topics. What's next, the debunking of Frosty and Rudolph? The figurative deaths of Peter Cottontail and Winnie the Pooh? What about Spongebob and Barney?

Like I said before (and was mostly ignored) if we would all just MIND OUR OWN BUSINESS instead of trying to control how other people live their lives and raise their kids, this wouldn't be a hot topic.

And furthermore, most of ya'll are missing what really happened. This wasn't a gently administered moment of truth from a teacher attempting to educate or enlighten. This was an angry, out-of-control woman figuratively destroying Santa Claus in order to HURT and UPSET a group of kids she'd lost control of. Whether or not a teacher should have the "right" to inform someone's child that Santa is not a real person in proper context and with proper motivation, this incident amounted to emotional abuse being used as a substitute for discipline and was wrong.

i think it all boils down to personal choice in what you choose to teach your child to believe. Christmas is one of those hollidays that we tell so many lies about anway, what's one more? And no, we don't celebrate the birth of Jesus on the 25th because it needs to be celebrated and they just chose an arbitrary day. It was chosen, by the pope, as a good way to convert people. "Hey look, our big holliday falls on the same day as yours, come join our religion. Your gods are just saints in our faith, but we still recognize them, so come join our faith. If not, we will kill you and rape your children."

We don't need santa, we get a whole two week celebration and a log to burn. Seriously, we get to light things on fire and stuff, it's not much cooler than that.

Awesome post Heike...

You really did a great job of describing the Jesusification of Santa and the Santafication of Jesus.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Often times we as parents and grandparents wonder why our children lie. The fact is that we breed liars. We ourselves teach children to lie. Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny, these are just some of the subtle methods we use to teach our children to lie. The results though are the same.

I had to be careful too as in my family they used sarcasm as a tounge-in-cheek sense of humor. One day my child caught me off guard when I was being blatantly sarcastic and asked, "really?" I had to say "no, not really" and explain that 'sense of humor'. My child trusts me for instruction so I should pay better attention towards sticking to the facts. Although outside the home, my child knows people will lie but from us as parents there's really no acceptable excuse.
