The world just lit up

I am in the Toronto Canada area right now. I was standing with a friend outside when the sky lit up like daylight for aprox. 4-5 seconds then dimmed to darkness again. The time was 4 am. can anybody confirm this??

The news of the blasts and fires is still all over the front pages of Canada's two main newspapers.

Actually at 4 am in the northern Toronto area a propane factory exploded today. That could have been it too. It was all over the news.

Damn... Im in Malaysia currently, yesterday in the evening (Between 2-3:30 in the afternoon. That would make it about 1 -2 a.m. back in my home state of Michigan.) I had a few customers here using the p.c. when The entire shop (my desk faces the front door and it was wide open to welcome in the customers.) lit up. It lasted just a few seconds but my customers looked at me and I just looked around trying to figure what the hell had happened. I went outside to see the neighbors (a bike repair shop) looking baffled as well. The light came in, I dont know how to describe it. It was like it sliced in.

yo hopefully it will happen again for some reason tonight dat b pretty sweet i wanna see then the world will blow up lol

Hey Masqua,

Did you see the footage on CTV, etc? I don't know much about how propane explodes, but in the raw videos I saw this morning, it looked like....well....a micro nuke? I'm not saying it is, just speculating. The Toronto police and RCMP would not give a green light if there was any danger, so I must be wrong. It was just fascinating comparing the explosions to micro nukes.

Marketing in the office today I reached a client real close to the blast zone, she was just evacuating as I called saying her street was on fire.

I work in a building on Bloor St. in Toronto, near Sherbourne St. and was was working last night (midnight shift). For people who don't know Toronto, the building where I work is probably 4 or 5 miles from the site where the propane facility blew up. At 4AM approximately, when the explosion took place, I heard a very loud "BOOM" and the sliding glass doors on the building shook a little.

At first I thought "Oh no, not on my shift!" I thought something had happened inside our building! But then as I sat there, waiting, wondering, nothing else happened. I went outside. Everything seemed normal. Traffic was moving normally. It was very disconcerting.

First a loud boom, then the building shivers a little, then nothing. It was very confusing. I realized that in the first moments of a terror attack or war attack, it must be very confusing for people. I knew from the sound that something had happened, but there was no more evidence of anything having happened. I kind of just wrote it off. About fifteen minutes later reports on the radio about what was going on started to come through.

I am from Ontario as well, not Toronto but a little North. Of course i didnt see any flash.

This reminds me of a couple of years back i was sitting on my back porch and my backyard was pitch black. All of a sudden the sky lit up like day and then the power in the neighborhood went out. Turns out some idiot was drunk and hit a hydro pole with his truck and the flash was the transformer exploding. Ill explain why.

For those of you that dont know, hydro transformers use an electrical property known as induction to either step up, or step down voltage on transmission lines. When you attempt to remove a magnetic field from an inductor, it tries to discharge its voltage and the power it discharges will increase indefinately untill it its strong enough to create an arc jump to a suitable return path or earth ground. Arc flash is as bright as the sun and in a larger arc can result in lighting up the immediate area as though it were day.

Well I might consider my self 'lucky' to be one of the ATS members who have seen the explosion live. About 3.45 last night I was getting home driving on 401 east bound before getting to Black Creek/400 ramp when I saw the huge fire lit up the sky. I first thought that maybe a big building was in fire. Following the smoke and ilumination by the time I got into 400 I saw the huge explosion which literally shook me to the bone. The mushroom cloud went up to the sky for more then 600-700 feet and the ground shook so bad that I thought it was going to open up beneath. Scary stuff, very scary. Honestly my first thought was that of a atomic bomb. The mushroom was so similar that I couldn't avoid thinking that way. Might sound ridiculous but in that moment every thing seamed possible.

I am in Northern California and i saw a flash - about 7:30pm on
Saturday Aug 9th. i even mentioned then that i saw a flash for a second
tho the sky just after eating dinner while looking out the back sliding door. It was still somewhat blue sky and no clouds. There was no lightning
or rain anywhere near here either. It just turned lighter for a second.

all I know is the first really big explosion on the youtube video from the Toronto propane place...looks an aweful lot like Russias new non-nuclear monster bomb...also in on of the videos it seems as though the police don't want people to film the event either...It is understandable trying to get people away from the location out of fear for their safety...but why does it matter if they are or are not or what they are or are not filming? Russia does seem to be flexing a lot of muscle lately...maybe it's all tied to the Iran situation and them knowing that Isreal will be acting soon...turning the whole region into a living hell...and Russia is jockeying for a better position on the battlefield for WWIII...Controling those bodies of water on either side of Georgia would be a big score for them (and Iran), especially considering they (Iran) are completely surrounded by US troops otherwise. The chess game is getting interesting now...the only question is, since all of us pawns can't see the whole board...Who is winning?

Your info about transformers reminded me of a hilarious story I read once about a town somewhere in Scandenavia, Sweden or Norway, where the police were called after residents reported witnessing a fireball hurtling across the sky.

They thought a meteor must have landed in the town. A search revealed nothing until the next morning when the charred body of a cat was found near a high voltage line.

...just wanted to mention I am in Pgh and I saw the brightest flash in the northern sky at about exactly the same time you mentioned. Nothing after it though....strange.

Edit: ...sorry guys. I have a terrible time adjusting to the time adjustment here and I misread the date on the OP....I saw my flash around 10:30ish tonight (8/10)...hope everyone in Toronto is getting along ok.
