I experienced the same phenomenon as a child..it was a meteor going over. It is time for Persid meteor showers I believe.

I was already awake (insomniatic here), the blast was some time after three, maybe three twenty or three thirty definitely not as late as 4 am like the reports say. I heard the blast and I'm all the way down near lakeshore, the blast was in north york. I heard a secondary blast. I live in a basement apartment and it sounded like a cross of thunder/lightening and a truck going by all at once. A boom and rumble. Then another one maybe a minute later and other minor rumblings.

Brother in law was awoken from the first boom and got outside in time to hear the second one and see the northern part of the sky turn orange/yellow.

About three minutes later I heard some sirens, though I doubt they'd be headed all the way up there? Maybe back up was called for, or more likely, its unrelated.

No serious injuries from the blast but one fire fighter died on scene, possibly a heart attack? Wasn't apparently related to the fire but they're doing investigations.

Some people are wondering if it could have been done on purpose, to send a message? Also worth noting the military armory right near by.

This is the good thing about ATS - you hear it here first!

I'm from Marietta, GA my girlfriend and were laying in bed when we heard a loud bang like an explosion and a bright flash like lightning which only lasted a few seconds the closest thing i can descibe is a transformer blowing up on a pole. so we got up and went outside too see our neighbors start trickling outside as well we didnt here any sirens but we found it odd that if a transformer blew why were the street lights the only thing out.

He might have seen the gas explosion to be sure. But once about six years ago around 10pm (was completely dark out) I was driving home when suddenly the sky lit up so brightly that it turned blue like daytime. Shadows were cast on the ground. The shadows and sky indicated to me that an enormously bright object was moving over head behind the car. Well I slammed on the brakes and jumped out of the car as quick as i could but it wasn't quick enough and it was gone. I thought it was probably a really good meteor. I watched the 11 o'clock local news that same night but nothing was mentioned. I asked people I knew if they saw it but no one was out that night at the same time. It was really frustrating not to be able to see it directly but only see the effects (which were mind blowing)

I have seen more reports of those "dancing lights" in that area here on ATS.

I am afraid our knowledge base is beginning to fail us. Perhaps this is what "they" intend.

"And the sky is filled with light, can you see it? All the black is really white, if you believe it." In This Twilight- Nine Inch Nails

But seriously, I haven't noticed anything strange around here (Ottawa, Ontario). Of course, I was asleep at 4 AM

please read your link

the MYTHS are that propene tanks explode if mechanically mishandled

if you read your link propperly - it states that propene tanks exposed to intense fire - do explode read the paragraph adressing Propane BLEVE incidents

so your link - actually supports the facts of the toronto case , namely :

a fire started in a facility containing multiple propane tanks - and the fire cause several tanks to explode after prolonged exposure to intense heat

Residents survey fire damage

Despite the scale of the devastation, the fire is believed to have claimed just two lives: veteran firefighter Bob Leek died in hospital after collapsing at the scene, and Sunrise employee Parvinder Saini is missing and presumed dead.

Things are returning to normal slowly, but many are asking what this plant was doing in the middle of such a high density residential area.

Mayor David Miller has gone on record saying that changes will be made. I hope he's good for that, but how he's able to pull that off I have no idea because industry has to be somewhat close to where people live so that they can get to work without long commutes.

One thing for sure, now that I've seen the videos of the explosions enough times, the initial blast certainly DID look like a small nuclear device had detonated.

The investigation of how it all began is still ongoing and will be for some time. When I hear about it, I'll add it to this thread (unless someone beats me to it, of course).

edit to add that the most serious problem keeping some of the 12.000 evacuees from returning home is the asbestos which was used at the site.

Only a handful of homes are deemed unsafe so far and need to be demolished.

Good Grief not another mundane explanation?

Where are the terrorists with the match?

Where are the Beam Weapons?

Where are the cool "Flaming Fireballs from Hell" videos?

Oh wait... that would be these....

And flying UFO's ??? err okay maybe IFO's

Here is a BEFORE shot form Google Earth

+43° 43' 57.60", -79° 28' 24.12"

Nice safe looking place... far away from residential dwellings

Just for 'giggles' here is one I found by fluke looking for Toronto explosions...

When I worked in the area there was the Airport and the industrial units... there were no houses... but people forget that housing developers will creep up on anything...

In Ontario California housing dev. moved into the Milk Cow area... residents had to sigh a petition that they understood that it would STINK and there would be flies...

Now there are so many houses they have lobby support and want the cows to go.... then complain about the price of milk

In North Las Vegas way out in the outskirts there is a huge pig farm... all the food waste from the hotels goes here... in Summer well 120 degrees + pig manure... you figure it out... same thing Developers... waivers in BIG RED LETTERS "Thou shall NOT complain about the pigs.."

Same thing... now the pigs have to go

Propane was there first sue the idiot developers who thought it a good idea to build houses across the street

Now ask yourself... a developer puts new houses below a flood control dam... would YOU but one?
Well they have that in TO as well

Maryland USA here, just reporting in about unusual weather we had today was the only thing i noticed out of the ordinary. The past few days its been rather hot and humid, however today was kinda chilly out of nowhere. I was just outback of my house to try to see the metor shower to no avail, too much light pollution. Nothing besides the weather that's too strange on my end.

This is August. Time for the Perseids Meteor shower.

Did you have a layer of cloud which could have been illuminated from above by a shooting star?
