Dear Sirs
If the pavement comes alive on Flatbush Ave with toothy smiles
Comprised of traffic cones and manholes become eyes
And birds burst into flames while singing Satan's praises
And fold into the sky and rain down ashy danger

If every office empties and all slaves walk in dazes
To a pool of liquid money where they bathe blissfully naked
And drugs no longer taunt me and flooze around my conscience
And every woman beating rapist is securely in their coffins

If every open hydrant in a Brooklyn time summer moment
Is opened up by cops and folds out into an ocean
And rent is paid by bread literally and parking isn't paid for
And food stamps can be planted and childhoods can't be damaged

If fire could power space ships that safely ship the creators
Of dynamite and gun powder to the graves of all who faced it
And the slurping nerf of beauracrat life and bean coutning slave owners
Is twisted in on itself til they shave off their own faces

If all the coke and crack in the nation is collected in a top hat
And force fed to the children of every CIA agent
And dust heads get an angel and an acres worth of rainbow
And the projects turn to clouds and the stupid aren't so proud

And the snivelling grimace mongrels of infected money slobbing pesticrats ignite
into a brilliant beam of light
And mercy is the rule
And the exception's mercy too
And the desert comes in Brooklyn and the President goes to school

Time flows in reverse
Death becomes my birth
Me fighting in your war is still, by a large margin
The least likely thing that will ever #ing happen...ever

Seems to me like rap is really getting on your nerves.I can picture one of your family members or close friends saying some racist comment about rap and you joining in/agreeing with it.The reason why i said that is because i have experienced that sort of awkwardness. Its also good to do some research before POSTING SOMETHING YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT son.

Reasons why i think Slothrop might be racist:
1 They generally sound like "BIPPITY BOPPITY GIVE ME THE ZOPPITY" to me.

2 Is that a racist point you were trying to make by quoting the jazz culture?
It didnt really need to be quoted.

3 " He is better educated than the AVERAGE THUG- this sentence proves that you dont know much as i sarcasticly stated in my last response(NOT EVERYONE IN RAP IS CONSIDERED OR CONSIDERS THEMSELVES A "THUG").Watch old gangster movies and you will know what a thug is.

4 I'll bet that even if you did meet Talib Kweli he probably picked up a bad vibe from you, didnt like you and knew that you are just another HATER.

5 Believing in satan is the most insane, ridiculous amount of garbage that i've ever heard in my entire life.(this comment has nothing to do with why i think youre racist just wanted to add that).

YOU slothrop DONT SEEM SO BRIGHT YOURSELF.It feels like i know exactly what type of a person you are just by reading what you type.
OVER AND OUT.

Doesn't a conspiracy need to have a plan?

If that is the case, who is the mastermind of 'rap music destroying the language'?
Is it the rappers who coin the slang, like "fo shizzle"? I doubt it.

Maybe it is the rich white music executives who have conspired to bring down 'the language' through there exploitation of rap music. But I doubt that as well...

Instead, it is more likely that Rap Music is not a conspiracy to destroy the language. That the changing of 'the language' has more to do with the melting pot of people and languages.

But then again, I think that 'Text Messaging is a conspiracy to destroy the language'...
All those cell phone companies are working together to "dstroy d lang, n corrpt d ppl of d wrld"...

Sorry but I grew up in the worst area of a large city. I grew up with the same chance as the thugs. I achieved what and where I am now (in the farm country not suburbs) through perseverance and hard work against all the odds. I know both side of the coin I have had relationships with the thugs and have yet to meet one that can think beyond whats in it for them. No deep thoughts just consumerism and hate and take, take, take.

My life is far from lonely, I have a large family, I am a Firefighter with a group of friends that will die for me in a heartbeat.

The name LoneGunMan refers to the lone gun man theory not a reflection of being alone. My signature reflects the current human condition placed there for everyone to not think outside the box. The Abyss is about inner reflection to find the deeper mysteries in life.

Again you have proven the ability to think in a manner that is shallow and how the corporations want you to think.

I love hip hop and all that it stands for. I love the clothes, the music, and more importantly the idea: for the open minded it represents a kind of social commentary for the times. I must agree, the whole east versus west thing from a couple of years ago was stupid, most likely perpetrated by the very suits that garner hate from many posters here. I don't think the music represents any race in particular and to call it "black music" is somewhat of a misnomer in my mind. I've written rhymes for over 15 years and in my travels I have met some of the most educated individuals, many with magnetic personalities that takes away my ability to wonder why some would seek to emulate their way of being. If rap is the corporate perversion of hip hop and their intentions are less than pure well... that almost like blaming video games for violence. I'm sure cars were stolen before GTA, I'm sure people killed others with shotguns before Doom, etc.

In any case, I think bad parenting, bad education, and more to the point the bad funding that communities receive is to blame for the state of affairs and rappers are the reporters from the frontlines. Leave kids nothing and eventually they will become disgruntled by the inequity.

you state that you grew up and new thugs and new how they thought and you also claim that you grew up in the worst part of an inner city i personallly dont believe that because if younew how things went down in the city i dont think you would be saying that. Alot of people You may perceive as thugs I know to be hard working people who are just doing what it takes to support there chidren, And also how about you try participating in a constructive discussion rather then trying to insult some ones intelligence.

Once again
Have A nice Day

You probably shouldn't generalize all rap music into one category.

Yes, there are som rap songs that just seem to be a lot of "filler" lyrics that relies heavily on the instrumental and base-driven beats to make it likeable.

There are also other rap songs in which the rappers lyrics and plays on words are totally relevant and nearly ingenious.

Think of this for a second: If you wanted to get a message out to the public, but didn't want the average person to understand that message head on, how would you do that??

You'd put it in a rap song.

Ask tupac shakur, oh, ya can't now, he was shot down to.

I see you be a canuke and far away from the states. So maybe you be the child since you shot off your ignorance before checking some facts.

Ever hear of the east coast west coast hip hop feud.

Sssssssssssss. In the case of hip-hop, you don't understand it so you classified it as nonsense, but actually Ebonic speech has a studied and recognizable grammar, and language innovation is an age old process that cannot be stopped (See: Romance Languages vs. Latin).

Also, if one wishes to be a hardcore language maven, one ought to use proper spelling and composition in one's own OP.

Tupac and Biggie were products of gang shoot-outs? You can't even prove that which in fact goes to you being the ignorant. Groups like NWA spoke out because cops go into their streets and hassle the innocent.

So what do you like? Metal, heavy metal, punk? Do you honestly think those genres are there to help people and not break down their thoughts too. Slang is developed with every language and with every culture. Stereotypical people like yourselves who think they are higher then any other race are the downfall of this world...

I tried desperately not to let this get to me too much, but after reading every post on this topic, I must say that I am extremely let down. I am and avid reader of almost every topic on ATS, and honestly have always considered this to be a pretty open-minded group for the most par; at least I thought that until today. The fact that this is even a living topic, and reading the vast majority of posts on this thread has shown me that I coudn't have been further from the truth. It is a non-issue to begin with, but somehow, ya'll have managed to turn a matter of opinion into one gigantic, close-minded, and in some cases, rascist tirade (again, of course barring a few posts made in the defense of the genre, and freedom of expression).
I truly expected more from ya'll than such blatant ingorance. I highly doubt that the bulk of you have ever even listened to any hip-hop, and if you have, you were likely as close-minded to it before you ever listened as you are now. I know this, because if you have truly listened to real hip-hop and real rap artists, and studied the rich cultural history from which it spawned, you would have to be absolutely brainless to remark as you had. Before you post such filth as this, do some research on the culture you are so pointlessly hell-bent on bashing and degrading, you might actually learn something you didn't know and hopefully step outside of your box a little bit.
Oh, and just to let you know, I am not some "thug" or whatever infantile, degrading, rascist stereotype you probably imagine that I am. I have my bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Ethics and am currently a law student at Temple University. I have listened to hip-hop my entire life, and owe most of my success as well as open-mindedness to it. The rappers that I have held as heroes inspired me to get where I am in life, so that I can one day fight for the equality and freedom of ALL human beings. They were far more than "thugs" as you label them, they were poets and revolutionaries at heart and I believe that one day their words will undoubtebly spark in the mind of some bright individual the revolution that this nation so dearly needs.
Open your mind and quit being ignorant, SON!

Racists.....you can't change thier mind nor can you ever call them enough names
. I doubt rap is doing this...I like some of it, but to me, most of it just sucks. Always someone trying to say crap about rap..imma poet I didn't even know it
.....it's just a way for the african american culture to express themselves not all of them but some..nothing more. To see it as a way to kill the english language is stupid, then so is country music. Y'all...word to your momma

Personally, no I do not think that rap music is a conspiracy to destroy the language. I agree that various forms of language that are heard or seen in the medium do eventually start to become used in common speech.

However, I would like to point out that a sizeable percentage of most Rap music is actually quite clever. I'm not going to go and find sources or lyrics of the net to back up my point, if you don't believe me then you can look yourself.

There are many, many Rap songs that include smart vocabulary and rhymes, I have wondered myself sometimes how such music I previously thought was cr*p could be so clever.

You sound confused besides showing your ignorance once again. These two killings besides many others are related to the 'business". Got it!.

Stereotypical people like yourselves who think they are higher then any other race are the downfall of this world...

Another ignorant statement since you don't really know now do you.

You people do realize...that rap music is the by product of years of oppression, demoralization, and hate mongering, correct? If a society shunned you, enslaved your grandparents, great grandparents, raped your mothers, daughters, wives, would you not subconciously ( if not conciously) seek to see the fall of such dominion? I find it funny those who judge "intelligence" on manner of speech. If for instance, a "scholar" of any foreign culture, be it latin, east indian, asian ect. were to only speak their native language in America, does that make them "morons" and "idiots" because you can't understand them? Ebonics is a native language, to less fortunate inner city children, and rap music is the soundtrack to it. Now, that it has reached into your suburban homes, and the more fortunate kids have grasped to it. Does it frighten you, that maybe expression cannot be oppressed? Conspiracy I doubt, its in your face, the "old regime" of America must fall. No cover up necessary.
