Well here is an attempt at explaining what is going on from an American who is on the ground in Georgia. If this is true, then I am in total support of Russia defending the people from the genocidal Georgians.

Saakashvili is a maniac, that much is clear but calling the Georgians "genocidal" is making a sweeping generalization and is insulting 4m people. Infact, over 1m of them actually live in Russia proper.

Life is priceless Randy.

How many lives do you think those 30-60 million$ Russian MIGs have taken in the last three days?

Jerusealm post ... Highlights from story

Kuwait Names Carrier Battle groups heading in

While the Kuwaiti daily did not name the ships it believed were heading for the Middle East, The Media Line's defense analyst said they could be the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the USS Ronald Reagan.

Meanwhile, the Arabic news agency Moheet reported at the end of July that an unnamed American destroyer, accompanied by two Israeli naval vessels traveled through the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean. A week earlier, a US nuclear submarine accompanied by a destroyer and a supply ship moved into the Mediterranean, according to Moheet.

That's 3 carrier battle groups as i'm counting just from USA

Here is the entire list of what we are sending for those who do not already know

The US Naval forces being assembled include the following:

Also likely to join the battle armada:

UK Royal Navy HMS Ark Royal Carrier Strike Group with assorted guided missile destroyers and frigates, nuclear hunter-killer submarines and support ships

French Navy nuclear powered hunter-killer submarines (likely the Amethyste and perhaps others), plus French Naval Rafale fighter jets operating off of the USS Theodore Roosevelt as the French Carrier Charles de Gaulle is in dry dock, and assorted surface warships

The USS Iwo Jima and USS Peleliu Expeditionary Strike Groups have USMC Harrier jump jets and an assortment of assault and attack helicopters. The Expeditionary Strike Groups have powerful USMC Expeditionary Units with amphibious armor and ground forces trained for operating in shallow waters and in seizures of land assets, such as Qeshm Island (a 50 mile long island off of Bandar Abbas in the Gulf of Hormuz and headquarters of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary

Russian

The Russian Navy this spring sent a major battle fleet into the Mediterranean headed by the modern aircraft carrier the Admiral Kuznetsov and the flagship of its Black Sea Fleet, the Guided Missile Heavy Cruiser Moskva. This powerful fleet has at least 11 surface ships and unknown numbers of subs and can use the Russian naval facility at Syria's Tartous port for resupply. The Admiral Kuznetsov carries approximately 47 warplanes and 10 helicopters. The warplanes are mostly the powerful Su-33, a naval version (with mid-air refueling capability) of the Su-27 family. While the Su-33 is a very powerful warplane it lacks the power of the stealth USAF F-22. However, the Russians insist that they have developed a plasma based system that allows them to stealth any aircraft and a recent incident where Russian fighters were able to appear unannounced over a US Navy carrier battle group tends to confirm their claims. The Su-33 can be armed with the 3M82 Moskit sea-skimming missile (NATO code name SS-N-22 Sunburn) and the even more powerful P-800 Oniks (also named Yakhonts; NATO code name SS-N-26 Onyx). Both missiles are designed to kill US Navy supercarriers by getting past the cruiser/destroyer screen and the USN point-defense Phalanx system by using high supersonic speeds and violent end maneuvers. Russian subs currently use the underwater rocket VA-111 Shkval (Squall), which is fired from standard 533mm torpedo tubes and reaches a speed of 360kph (230mph) underwater. There is no effective countermeasures to this system and no western counterpart.

on Iran

The two-ton elephant in the living room of the neo-con strategy is the advanced biowar (ABW) that Iran, and to a lessor extent Syria, has. This places the motherlands of the major neo-con nations (America, France, the United Kingdom), as well as Israel, in grave danger. When the Soviet Union fell the Iranians hired as many out-of-work former Soviet advanced biowar experts as possible. In the last 15 or so years they have helped to develop a truly world class ABW program utilizing recombination DNA genetic engineering technology to create a large number of man made killer viruses. This form of weapon system does not require high tech military delivery systems. The viruses are sub-microscopic and once seeded in a population use the population itself as vectors. Seeding can be done without notice in shopping malls, churches, and other public places. The only real defense to an advanced global strategic biowar attack is to lock down the population as rapidly as possible and let those infected die off.

and...

I have witnessed through the night...the take off of a great many aircraft from north of me in central Phoenix... perhaps north scottsdale? not sure... but quite a few planes have taken off... Just saw several fighters of unknown type about 15 minutes ago... and what appeared to be larger planes through much of the evening supplies, bombers? Not sure...

Friend in Northern AZ reported to me about 20 minutes ago... large rumbling sounds from large vehicle movement about 20 miles away from him south east of Flaggstaff... says daytime train loads appeared to be carrying military supplies along hwy 40

Agree or disagree, it does attempt to explain the situation in a bit more detail given he has been on the ground. It still does not attempt to explain the total death toll substantially.

But my post remains, if Russia's are simply trying stop genocide from happening, they have my support. Now thats not to say they wont get something out of it. I just think the Georgians are severely pissed off right now, and are pretty desperate to inflict massive casualties.

Well that right there is pretty misleading, the translation I read states that the US armed them with the latest technology. You have seen pictures of the gear they're using right? I would hardly call that latest. If the US forked over a dozen or so f/a 35s or something like that, then I would be inclined to agree.

Sounds like more justification from the Russian side of things. Have to make it look pretty for the common folk.

I don't think that Joe was on vacation in the region as RT claims.
I think he actualy lives there. And he also has a South Ossetian passport since October 2006.

I see what your saying, but think the roots of this thing go way back.

I believe Russia aims to topple the pro-Western Georgian government which was about to join NATO.

Also, three weeks ago, Russia tried to land Nuclear bombers in Cuba, but a US commander said that cannot happen.

Jane's Defense Review also cited that Russia had amassed troops outside the Georgian boder South of South Ossetia since July 19th under the pretext of "military exercises". They did not leave, but rather, went into Georgia after the proclaimed genicidal raid of Ossetia by Georgian troops.

I agree, Russia does not stand to gain much by having a pro-west Georgia. As I said, Russia stands to gain something irregardless of who is doing what.

Thanks - a rough estimate but goes to show you how costly it is to lose planes. It's ultimately how Afghan forces defeated the Russian military using Stinger missles.

Three B-52s left this base in the last 24hrs. I was counting. Hard to say, what's what, but I do know Flagstaff and Tuscon are good indicators of US military activity.
