At this point I am not sure. I have not been following this for the past few hours and at the rate updates have been going on this issue I am going to have to say I am pretty far behind. I am sure that a lot has been going on that the public dose not know about.

All I can say is what you already know and that is that Russia has it's plans that I am sure the west is trying to find the most about while bringing this situation to a peaceful end.

Here is a somewhat informative timeline of the conflict in South Ossetia over the years. I don't know how much, or whether, it's biased in favor of one side or another. Ideally, it will be even handed and objective (i.e. just the facts.) I don't have anything to contrast it to though, so exercise your own judgment. www.reuters.com...

Russia did the same for the "separatists" -

Both Russia and the US knew this was coming for months.

It's getting closer for US invention.

'Georgian troops have pulled out of Tskhinvali under Russian fire to change their location and provide a humanitarian corridor so the wounded can be evacuated,' according to Reintegration Minister Temur Yakobashvili.

Ok as the topics are being kicked around the thread.

Found something not new but I have not seen it before
President George W. Bush pledged U.S. support for Georgia's territorial integrity and has been updated regularly on the crisis involving Russia in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia, the White House said on Saturday.

"I want to reiterate on his behalf that the United States supports Georgia's territorial integrity and we call for an immediate ceasefire," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said in a statement in Beijing where Bush was attending the Olympics

Now as for Russia invading

It looks like they are ready to open another front.

There were also signs that Russia was preparing to open up a second front from Georgia's other breakaway region of Abkhazia on the Black Sea coast. Georgia accused Moscow of sending troops by sea to Abkhazia and a United Nations peacekeeping official warned that separatist fighters were preparing an imminent attack on Georgia

Far too much speculation going on: if georgia are so wanting a cease fire then maybe they should also stop firing as well....

`cease fire russia , we want to talk - oh and ignore the thumping of outbound 155mm artilery , its nothing really`

about the pictures - the bbc picture says `burning building in gori` , i swear i saw that yesterday as a burning building in Tskhinvali

as for an invasion - 1500 troops is really a battalion in size - compared to the regiment (at least) of Georgians so reinforcement of the rest of the regiment for a `take and hold` operation is common sense ; for offensive operations i would expect a full combat brigade and 30,000 or more - combat doctrine is you out number you enemy at least 4 to 1.

and the hypocracy shown in this thread is amazing:

russia have gone too far

time for russia to withdraw

russia have killed too many

HELLO???? US in iraq anyone - they should have left years ago - pot kettle black.

Yeah, if the US would just stop war mongering the entire planet would blossom into Utopia. Russians and Ukranians would dance around the maypole holding hands. The Serbs and Kosovars would lay down together.
India and Pakistan would French kiss. Palestinians and Arabs would suddenly love the Jews.

All Muslims would suddenly elevate the social status of females. Every human being would be incredibly intelligent, beautiful and disease-free forever. If it wasn't for those darn Americans. There never would have been a Third Reich or a Bolshevik if it weren't for that darned US acting consistently against the rest of the industrialized nations' wishes.
Rogues. Cowboys. Maybe somebody oughta take them out and put some smart people in charge like the French.

Yeah, that stupid ol USA has gone done messed it up again! Started a war between Georgia and Russia somehow... I suppose Bush & Cheney used telepathy to tweak the minds of their leaders.

Good post, btw. I am guessing that your satire will be taken literally and some of the stars your post earned were from people that actually think Utopia would occur if the US would just stop existing.

As for this new war, for me it is still to early to point fingers because there's so little good information. Allegations of ethnic cleansing by Georgian forces, or aggression by Russia. Who knows at this point? Looks like this was a situation waiting to happen either way.

Just read your link. It is obvious that South Ossetia dose want to become part of Russia, correct? However, Georgia dose not want South Ossetia to become part of Russia. This was in 2002 and since then I guess South Ossetia is still not part of Russia for whatever reason.

So here is the most important question in my mind. What is so important about South Ossetia that Georgia want's it that bad?

it was the military airport next to the international one - so the video shows anyway - or is that wrong?

the only way into Georgia is via that tunnel - unless they went for a long long walk around a number of countries

More like the longer it goes on, the more time the spin doctors have to make sure all the droids in the world buy the "Russian Aggressor" story.

All the media are reporting on are the apartment blocks in Gori being bombed by the Russkies and showing those poor old people on TV. What about the 1200+ dead in SO after Georgian artillery barrages? Those pretty lights they showed floating through the sky on the first night of the fight weren't sparklers, they were rocket artillery barrages fired indiscriminately into a civilian area.

Georgia started this, Georgia declared war, and now Georgia is finding out what happens when you poke the bear in the cage one too many times.

Russia reported the '1200' figure which Georgia claims is exaggerated.

The Russian separatists broke the original cease-fire and provoked Georgia to 'root-out' Russian backed separatists provoking them once and for all.

The separatist region has always been a Russian foot-hold in the Georgian province in order to use it as a pretext for taking over the democracy on it's border soon to join NATO.

Well, presumably, Georgia wants to reintegrate the 'break-away' region(s), secure its territory and end the ongoing disputes so that it can be successfully accepted into NATO. Russia - and Mr. Putin - don't like this.

MOSCOW, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Vladimir Putin accused Georgia on Saturday of seeking "bloody adventures" and trying to drag other countries into a military conflict in its separatist region of South Ossetia.

"Georgia's aspiration to join NATO ... is driven by its attempt to drag other nations and peoples into its bloody adventures," he said during a meeting in the Russian city of Vladikavkaz. Parts of the meeting were shown on television.
