Yeah. This might seem a bit conspiratorial (hey, this is ATS, after all), but do you think Russia might provoke Georgia - or at least report that Georgia continues to fight during the 'ceasefire' - so they can keep this going and possibly advance to some other positions? It wouldn't surprise me if Georgia had done that, too; every time it looked like coming to a halt yesterday, the Georgian government kept reporting that people were dying and that stuff was being blown up all over the place - probably to get the attention of the U.S. and NATO.

Hmm.

Russian TV reporter resigns after station cancels his Georgian broadcasts

Russians appear to be getting only one side of the story of the conflict in Georgia. According to a Moscow Times article, Russian television is showing the misery left by the Georgian assault in South Ossetia, but few, if any, reports mention Russia's bombing of Georgia.

After William Dunbar, a correspondent for the English-language state channel Russia Today, mentioned the bombing in a report on Saturday, his scheduled reports later that day were cancelled by the station. He said: "I felt that I had no choice but to resign."

I've been watching Russia Today since August 8th when Saakashvili launched his surprise attack. Their reporting has been very objective which is why the Georgian regime banned all Russian TV and barred Russian domain names. Pretty tough to report from there if the regime doesn't let you into the country !

On the other hand, CNN and especially the abysmal BBC have really disgraced themselves. They seem to think that this is 1990 and that their double standards will go unnoticed and that they can continue to sell the Orwellian nonsense that worked so well during the Yugoslav civil war.

Bitterness at RT is kinda predictable though. They've gotten good ratings during the last week.

Not so. It is simply that western channels reflect a western stance. Similarly Russian channels reflect a Russian stance.

When I listen to Putin spouting on about the Georgian forces pushing civilians into buildings then burning them down I shake my head at the blatent attempt to demonize the enemy in the eyes of the Russian people. However I don't accuse the Russian media of disgracing themselves for being inclined to whip up such feelings. After all their viewers have sons and relatives involved in the fighting.

I've also been monitoring Russia Today as well as RTR, etc. They have a pretty noticeable bias towards the Russian position, in fact, and it doesn't surprise me that the reporter in question got into trouble.

Many people appear to be accepting the argument that Georgia provoked all this.

But

1) They went into part of their own territory to deal with separatist militias that have been fighting the government for years.

2) There are claims that Russian 'peacekeepers'(!) deliberately provoked a Georgian response on a local scale, which ignited the current crisis

3) Such a move by the 'peacekeepers' fits rather snugly with the widely-held belief that Russian forces have been massing in and around this area for months

4) Russia has the most to gain from conflict: reassertion of their regional power and an opportunity to slap the US in the face as a result of its planned missile defense system deployment.

Do you really think Georgia would deliberately provoke Russia into intervening? There would be no surer way of guaranteeing that Georgia would lose South Ossetia - which has now happened.
