Reuters has obtained a copy of the draft U.N. resolution which Russia has deemed insufficient.

The draft, obtained by Reuters, calls for an "immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities," supports the "sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Georgia" and backs mediation by the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

It also calls for the withdrawal of Russian and Georgian forces to their positions prior to Georgia's move on Thursday to reclaim control over its breakaway region South Ossetia.

It does not criticize either Russia or Georgia but would have the council say it is "gravely concerned at the escalation of violence in Georgia" and the spread of violence into Georgia, including another breakaway enclave, Abkhazia.

www.reuters.com...

Russia has reportedly rejected this draft on the basis that it does not specifically mention or deplore Georgian aggression.

Journalist killed in Georgia - reports

A GEORGIAN journalist covering his country's conflict with Russia has been killed when a shell hit his car in Gori, an Agence France-Press photographer at the scene said.

His driver also died in the mid-morning incident, said the photographer, who saw the journalist's ID card and the stricken vehicle in the main square of Gori alongside a huge statue of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

USA will not publicly do any thing to save Georgia from this mess, reason.
Look at this financial blog link:
www.bloggingstocks.com...
If Russia put on the market all $50 billion of its Fannie Mae mortgage-backed bonds and its US dollar-backed assets and of course will accept only Rubles and Euros in the future sale of Russian oil and natural gas, which the European will willingly do.
Then Russia could create a massive financial meltdown of the USA economy which could dwarf the mortgage US crisis.
It is not so easy for the neon con in Washington to lay they grand plan!

Lavrov: Saakashvili cannot be partner in the negotiations

On August 12, 2008 12:26
Lavrov: Saakashvili cannot be a partner in the negotiations
Moscow. On August 10. INTERFAX.RU - the head of MID RF Sergey Lavrov confirmed the position of Moscow, according to which the present President of Georgia cannot be a partner in the peaceful negotiations.

“I do not think that Russia will have a mood not only to conduct negotiations, but also to talk from Saakashvili. It completed criminal acts against our citizens”, stated Lavrov at the press conference on the results of the meeting with his associate from Finland by Alexander [Stubb].

“We proceed from the fact that Mr. Saakashvili no longer can be our partner, and there would be best anything, if it left”, said Lavrov.

Sure its war same as Russia bombing of the cities the # of dead so far is countless probably far greater then what happen in S.Q

How is that so. The russians didn't levelled any city while people were in it. And by ``levelled`` I mean destroyed and burn to the ground.

Su-25 aren't bombers, and the russian offensive is not like US cruise missiles strikes on Iraq nor B-2 bombers bombing Iraq... Even if they ``bombed over 50 times`` ... it's not a lot of explosives and if there was hundreds of deads on the georgian side, we would see it as most of the western media is pro-Georgia.

Just saying. But anyway, it's bad everywhere.

For the treaty, France should add that they deplore Georgia agression of South Ossetia.... so the killing can stop.

Here is an interesting side story in which the conflict in Georgia is factoring somewhat.

WARSAW (Reuters) - Washington's negotiator John Rood is expected to visit Warsaw later this week in a bid to break an impasse in Polish-U.S. talks over hosting a U.S. missile shield, a U.S. official said on Monday.

The United States wants to deploy 10 rocket interceptors in Poland and a radar in the neighboring Czech Republic as part of its missile shield against ballistic rockets it says could be fired by states such as Iran.
...
"The example of Georgia shows strongly how important is today the security of Poland and of the whole region," Tusk said.

"In the whole post-Soviet region realistic guarantees of security and territorial integrity are even more important today."

www.reuters.com...

If Russia was irritated at the idea of a missile defense system on its doorstep, it will likely be even more so at the notion of using the Georgian conflict to help justify it.

With that I'm going to bed for the night. I hope that tomorrow there will be news of more concerted efforts at securing peace, rather than further escalation. Good luck everyone.

That doesn't sound like good news. Not now Russia just stated that they won't negotiate a ceasefire with Shaakasvili.

If the Italians go in, it will be as peaccekeepers under EU or UN authority. I don't think you will see them in an active role.

Russia themselves actually requested the meeting with NATO around Sunday, and now NATO are saying that it won't take place.

How on earth does that work...

I presumed everyone knew the missile shield was to increase the potential of US nuclear first strike capabilities? In any event, looks like the Georgia war may sway Poland to adopt the plan, fear sells.
