I really think Russia caught wind of what was being planned for Iran, and they've moved first to get at the Caspian Sea.
This is easily turning into a psyop war for all the rest of us to have bit of a chew on.

That doesn't make much sense. Russia is already at the Caspian Sea, Georgia is at the Black Sea.
As a new significant non-OPEC source of oil, Azerbaijan will
become a significant contributor to Europe’s energy security, a desperately needed
asset given Russia’s dominance in the European energy market. The fact that Azerbaijan’s
leadership has preferred this western route over Russian or Iranian routes shows
the limited nature of Baku’s trust in its northern and southern neighbors and its
desire to secure the country’s independence and sovereignty with the help of
Turkey and the West.

Whatever. If they did provoke them, does that give the Georgians the right to gun-down 1,500 civilian souls in the street? Answer me that.
