Yup, that's my bet too. I'm still getting nada though but the MySQL errors. I just heard a news headline on CBC radio saying blah, blah about the US saying this has nothing to do with any "new" concerns and apparently is talking at the ambassadorial level to her friends and neighbours that "could" be involved... the plot thickens. Theatre-noir begins. LOL. Temperature rising.

I don't recall too much like this ever... wait, no, I lied. The Cuban Missile deal was similar in some respects.

Vic

EDIT: To add can someone verify that this link no longer works? It should lead to where it did before. Wink. I think someone is cleaning up their footprints or a technical snafu. Wink. It's a Goddard link. 2006-57A

I see a lot of folks whining because we are shooting this thing down.

There is not a single reason NOT to take a shot at it, and if we just ignore it and let it crash these same folks would whine because we DIDN'T shoot it down.

There are a number of good reasons to shoot it, namely:

1 - We might be able to keep somebody from getting seriously injured or killed from falling debris or nasty rocket fuel.

2 - It is a great exercise for the military to show off, both for us and for any other countries.

3 - We ALREADY paid for this missile. We might as well shoot the damn thing and see if it works.

So, if there is even a chance that we can pull this off, why wouldn't we?

PS It also helps keep our imaging technology from falling into the wrong hands and keeps them guessing as to what our capabilities are.

After posting, I *did* think of one reason not to shoot:

- If we miss, it will be REALLY embarrassing.

One more point I would like to add to emsed1's reasons.

Its better (and safer) if you shoot down the satellite then letting it crash somewhere and then sending special forces to destroy, recover multiple pieces of the satellite in unfriendly territory.

I'm guessing... a shot from the North Pacific while the USA193 is just past being overhead and they'll drop it in the mid-Pacific. I'll take Tuesday next week at... damn the sat-track site is still down. D'Oh. A daylight pass for sure. If they miss? And the EKV doesn't have a self destruct? Or it fails? Another loose bit of mass to fall to Earth... check out Raytheon products on their site. Something like that.

Hit a tumbling satellite with a rock... sure no problem. They are only travelling faster than a rifle bullet. Piece of cake. Easy as pie. The US has good rocks... some surely as good as USA193. They could miss more than once too...

Vic

EDIT: I was poking around some rocket sites... you'd be amazed at how many rockets use N2H4 (Hydrazine) within our atmosphere. Huge amounts compared to the little bitty amount on USA 193.

I watched a video clip of the announcement. Military dude talking head guy as late as last night maintains that hydrazine will possibly hit the ground... and it's the "big safety issue", that's horse-#, IMHO. The beryllium bits stand a better chance of making it down in any concentration. The hydrazine should disperse over a wide-ish area when the tanks blow from aero-heating early-on in an uncontrolled de-orbit anyway. They are designed as light as possible for a pressure vessel and are normally under extreme pressure.

The US explanation... could use a little "tune up" IMHO. I don't trust the official story one bit.

I bet there are bookies in Vegas taking odds on this.

I saw during the superbowl that they were taking bets on all kinds of stuff, like how long the national anthem would take, etc.

This is a neato graphic from Reuters showing the smackdown:

REUTERS article

This graphic claims that half of the satellite would survive the fall.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't want to get hit by even HALF a bus at 15,000 mph.

It also looks like the AEGIS cruiser will have three missiles, although I haven't read anything about a third shot.

Here's what NASA reps have said within the hour. The media "old ones" who pushed on the security and press issues also asked two very good questions. To Pat and Todd of the media.

There will be a window of potential opportunity at certain times... um, I wish I had a machine with Fortran 90 right about now. Tuesday and Wednesday... I can't get the damn track from n2yo or I could come pretty close on the window... They are doing a reboost of ISS tomorrow... yeah, there's a potential window.... maybe for ISS and STS and a bunch of other assets.

This is getting interesting.

Vic

EDIT: To add,

The missile intended to be used is rather physically small... that K-V just might just punch a hole clean through or maybe frag like a bullet with a larger exit wound... maybe not, could miss and fly off to wherever. Sure will be an interesting event. Every asset possible will be watching for this from apace and the ground. The history of the system hasn't been entirely successful... but it "should" work. Should. It either will or it won't... rabbit's feet could be involved, diplomats are. We'll see.

Here's some links... the first is a bit more data to round out the stuff offered back-thread by nataylor on the delivery system (all solid propellants - no hydrazine - LOL). the second is the missile classification guide. Lotta missiles and stuff and the naming hierarchy... save it for a rainy day.

The article saying half the satellite would survive reentry is government supplied and most likely propaganda. Remember when MIR fell to earth? The space shuttle Columbia disentegrated into two hundred thousand pieces because a few tiles fell off.

This satellite is much smaller than Columbia and not designed for rentry. It would disentegrate except Bush wants to show the Chinese and Russians we are BADASSES and can shoot anything they can shoot down and better.

Heard the Bush said the Navy was going to hit the satellite.

Can't just do at your say so Bush.

Just heard: If they miss, they will try again.

Lets see how good an non inside job goes.

Whoa... fire a missile from a boat? I didn't even know we had SSMs (Surface to Space Missile). Thing must be huge. ICBMs are one thing but to target something in orbit and then fire a missile at it from the surface... that's crazy significant. If we've got that kind of ability big surprise the Chinese were able to shoot down one of our spy planes. Should make for quite the demonstration.

[edit on 14-2-2008 by apc]

The SM-3 Standard missle is "fired from a boat", er ship and is not that large.
missile info

The more amazing thing to me is that they say they are aiming at the fuel tank on the satellite. Now, that's some real fancy shootin' there, Tex!

The best plan is in the Armageddon movie,
where you set explosives on the satellite,
yet we are so behind in capability.

But I'd do it and save Bruce from it.

SM-3 needs a good test.

ED: Whats this hydrazine doing up the, tax the elite with a
hydrazine tax or fine these Illuminati rocket companies big time.
The INSIDE JOB never stops.

A quick link to an Earthbound use of Hydrazine... you'll love it... it's from a car company, here. Just a small joke.

I got through to n2yo but it isn't loading correctly at all. No matter. There is another Raytheon product in the Pacific, an asset likely to be involved in some manner or form... here.

"This is a test", like the civil defense messages on the radio and TV when I was a much younger person ring in my ears. I remember air raid horns in the school on towers. Woo. Flashback.

I need a drink. LOL. As soon as I get some good sat data I'll take a shot at a guess what might be where when Tues/Wed. The Russkies could just fly up there in a jet and pull the trigger just as easily and drop it on some asset in the Pacific... nah. Make it look like North Korea. I'm kidding. Make it look like PJ Jones truck tonight at Daytona. You think they'd adopt modern fuel systems so fires like that don't occur. He's OK. USA193 isn't.

Cheers,

Vic

EDIT: At 9:15PM Eastern n2yo.com is back up and one can track ISS and USA193 on the same screen for now.

I am concerned about the ‘failure’ of a controlled fall such as this satellite. Besides the Navy potential wasting taxpayers’ money from practicing their multiple shot(s) on this piece of junk, to ‘explode’ this object outside the earth’s atmosphere would be better than risking the possible damage to the earth’s environment and its inhabitants as well. Moreover, there has to be a way to inform the unlucky citizens targeted for death below to evacuate immediately, at least.

The sky is falling! Run!

And if it's coming down into Los Angeles? You CAN NOT evacuate a large city immediately. How is it a waste of our money to shoot the missiles we already bought, and they were already going to be shooting ANYWAY in other test launches?

Also according to that they have 3 tries since that's the amount of rockets they specially modified for this mission

If they miss what will happen to the missle? this also should be brought up. Figuring either it will be some huge piece of junk up there or it may also come crashing down on top of someone?

turned me on to a blog about sats... satrackcam.blogspot.com, here.. Nice fellow knows his stuff... has been "visited" by the NSA, US State Department, DoD, and the Sarge at Arms for the US Senate. Look for the entry called, "How USA 193 rocked this blog."

Buddy ain't a BS artist. Read it. Now we got zippo for data... the sat sites are either jammed with so much traffic (which I seriously question) or "someone" is jamming us upstream on the data or messing with server crap. Great, perhaps this is all a friggin' co-incidence.

I want Putin to shoot it while 43's in Africa preachin' abstinence - what a dork. Thanx, bud... on all accounts - dork. Worse than Nixon. That's bad. Putin ain't no worse, no better IMHO.

USA 193 is coming down... last good data (IMHO) indicates Tuesday would be good... 3 ships, 3 missiles, 3 shots or so various versions of the story go... so far. The time depends on whether they want to use ISS or STS assets to document the event. If they do... orbit 190-something would be about right.

I can't get jack at Dryden or Goddard... the servers are gonzo. The ISS crew conference was on NASA-TV... the issue was "side-stepped" upon media quiry and it wasn't denied in any real way that ISS/STS "would not in any way be involved with USA 193". OK. The words "no problem" were used. Sure, like I believe you "people" under the current data-jam and blackout. The Astros are simply being told what to say... um, notice no Russky comments during 122, wink (well almost none).

Now they say STS-122 "is on the ground" before the shot... OK. if you say and "they" do say that. That'd make it around nine-hundred hours Eastern on Wednsday... orbit 203 or later... STS weather is still unclear. They are bringing up Edwards now. Many variables. Big-league chess match...

I pick the Ruskkies over the Yanks... easier to distrust as a "known" intention. Putin's just ruthless... that's a known. The US is an "unknown" wildcard festival of Cowboy bumbaclots. Oh, and Cheney. Internationally US has egg on it's face everywhere but in the CONUS already... Expect more international reaction today... Hello Hugo? Dah, dah, dah. It's in the harbour... drive it off into the jungle and set the GPS and inertial guidance system and press the big green button after flipping the "safe" lockout. No, you can't have those, Hugo... yet. Dah, two bottles. Yes, from the St. Petersburg cellar. Say hi to Raoul. Dah. Click.

Fun you bet...

Vic

Dread-mon, Babylon 'a comin'. This is Dread. I kid. It could be worse. There could've been nuclear weapons onboard USA 193. Who'd really know eh?

EDIT: It would be a real bitch if Vlad "yoinked" US Soyuz and Progress privileges for reasons of "international and national security" and told everyone to go pound salt who's involved with ISS and space co-operation. I'd not put it past Putin...

I just found this useful link to track USA 193 as it orbits the planet.

It comes courtesy of Heavens Above and you don't need a membership to see this page.

You can even get charts with times for when it will pass over your location.

...this reminds me of playing roulette at the casino....

Too cool mighty'!! Thanx.
A lil' deeper in at "heavens" they have a nice info page for folks with an interest here. I don't see the orbital data... I'm tryin' to get a bud in Spain to help out... of course they're fishing. That's what I'd be doing too this time of year or out paintin' Valencia red.

n2yo is "back" but keeps pitching MySQL errors at me.
