Cho got off 170 shots in 9 minutes?? Wow!

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The massacre inside a chained-shut Norris Hall went on for nine minutes as Seung-Hui Cho fired off 170 rounds, killing 30 people before shooting himself in the head, police revealed Wednesday. But they said investigators still don't know why Cho launched the bloody attack on his fellow students at Virginia Tech.

Thats some pretty good shooting in my uneducated to gun violence opinion. Wonder if he had any formal/informal training that will soon come to light. ... any shooters out there wanna give their thoughts??

Not terribly great shooting as his kill ratio was pretty low. But he had to have some deep pockets or a pack or something to hold all those clips.

Works out as 1 round every 3 seconds. Entirely possible with a semi-auto handgun I suppose, but you have to factor in the time it took to walk about and find people to shoot, etc.

I would have thought it was possible to do without any formal training, as long as he knew his weapon.

either he had some rotc training which involved firearms.

maybe he went to the shooting range on the weekends.

maybe he played video games plus learned about it online.

he killed 33 people in 170 shots. Thats about 5.2 shot's per person. Basically anyone could of done it, all they needed to know was how to reload and how to pull the trigger.

At first I thought he had 90 rounds which is about 2.7 shots per person. I figured he had military training. But now we know that he was just putting alot of bullets in everyone to make sure he got a kill.

School rooms and halls are not very big, especially when people are hiding under tables, behind desks and so forth.

Maybe just walking about shooting aimlessly into the open door ways accounts for so many bullets.
but 30 dead in 9 minutes?
How many people does a class room hold?
Consider he chained the doors closed at one end too.

Not outside the realm of possiblity with or without training.

Uh 170 shots in 9min?! Thats alot of rounds in a short aount o ftime. How many magazines did he have? Anyone familiar with firearms knows thats its a pain reloading a semi-auto magazine with the 12-15 rnds each. And it take time. It's even harder when the pistol is new. So this must mean he had lots of magazines, or some extended ones. 170 rnds at 15 rnds each would be 11-12 magazines that he brought with him.

Not sure exactly what the laws are for extended mags in VA, but in CA the magazines are limited to 10rnds. If this is the case then 17 magazines were needed by CHO!

This whole episode doesn't make good sense to me. There is nothing that the "official" story has relayed that really adds up. This guy had an accomplice. There is not much doubt in my mind about it.

He could easily carry that many magazines. Two fanny packs could carry that many clips stacked on top of each other. Any that couldn't fit in there he could stuff into his pockets. It's a matter of seconds to reload a pistol with a preloaded magazine.

How many people did he injure ? 32 dead but how many people got hit ? 170 shots doesn't mean anything, imagine if he hit a majority of people twice, thats a good average, what I would like to know is how many shots hit a target ?

It's been reported that most if not all of the injured and dead, had 3 or more bullet wounds each. So let's do some math on averages: 32 dead, 24 wounded=56 totalx3 bullet wounds each=168 bullets. of course this is an average, some may have only 1-2 wounds, some bullets may have wounded more than one person. In any case it means CHO really didn't miss very much, maybe say 10-15 shots missed. That's pretty remarkable even in close quarters.

Right sure he COULD carry that many, but my point was what WAS found on him. How many magazines did he actually have on him at the time of his death.

The pistola he used were the GLock 19 9mm and the Walther 22 caliber, both semi-autos

Yeah, and both quite easily capable of firing 170 rounds in under 9 minutes.

Gee, what do you know? They found 17 empty magazines in the building.

Thanks for answering my question. Is there a source for the information? I don't know what your sarcasm is about in your post, I never did say he didn't use that amount of magazines, I was asking.

Even public schools where I am typically have 25-30 people in them, so all he really had to do was clear one class. We have larger rooms that can hold 150 people easily. And if he was in a cafeteria, there could easily be 300 or more people in there around noon.

Considering the school has 20,000 students or something ridiculous and it takes 15 minutes to walk across the campus, it's safe to say they have lecture halls that would hold 500 people or more.

Wow. We are in agreement on this one.

Bottom line is this whole thing stinks. Something's up for sure.

You were lucky at my school in your 1st 2 years a t college to only have 35-45 people per class. Normally lecture halls have 250-400 people per class in a sloping auditorium style, or movie theater style. Some of the undergrad classes had monitors for the professor lectures, the prof would be lecturing several of these large classes from a central location. The feed is then transmitted to all of the halls via the tv monitors.

I apologize for the sarcasm. I got woken up early this morning and didn't sleep well last night. There was a cnn article I found that showed they found 17 magazine in the building.

It's been like that for awhile.
I used to go into 9/11 and it always did bad things to my blood pressure.
