If I'm not mistaken there is a policy of mandatory military service in South Korea.

As I recall, you are correct.

South Korea does have mandatory military service. I served with a ROK soldier when I was in. He was probably the most disciplined, serious, & focused soldier in the unit.

I don't know if the shooter served though.

Ah, here it is:

Military service age and obligation:
20-30 years of age for compulsory military service; conscript service obligation - 24-28 months, depending on the military branch involved; 18 years of age for voluntary military service;

theres an aspect of this that bothers me, well aside from teh obvious.

if he was south korean...how exactly did he purchase a gun legally? i was under the impression, though i could be wrong as i havnt purchased a gun in a few years...that you had to be a resident of the state and a US citizen to pass the backround checks.

so, either someone (many someones) dropped the ball or, his gun wasnt legally purchased.

or have the laws changed? i mean, dont get me wrong, i like my guns and WILL keep them, but i AM for laws that make sense.

Quote from my post on the previous page answers that.

Gun purchase

Mr. Cho had proof of Virginia residency, checkbook (for a second ID), and his green card(which is, of course, not green). That is all he needed to purchase a handgun.

i dunno if its been mentioned but CNN have a quote from one of the doctors at Montgomery Regional Hospital that says "here wasn't a shooting victim that didn't have less than three bullet wounds in them" and he describes the injured a bit too "we saw one patient that had a bullet wound to the wrist, one to the elbow and one to the thigh. We had another one with a bullet wound to the abdomen, one to the chest and one to the head"

if he was putting 3 bullets in each person im not sure he was that well trained (unless it was like 2 bullets centre mass and one head) but im no expert on this

I am thinking that alot of bulletes may have ricochets off off people, some may have went through more than one person, and some may have hit more than 1 body part. ep went through the wrist which was on the thigh so the bullt went through both. Those ae just some explanations IMO

I think this deserves to be posted again. The guy is handling this whole thing with a lot of class.

I agree but...that guy is still crazy. Besides the pics he said that this is why he feels all students should have guns in class on college. Yeah he has handled it with class BUT he is still a bit off his rocker

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Glock-17 have a burst-fire mode in which it can dispense 2-3 bullets on every release?
Seems that these wounds are typical of that..

And yes S Korea does have 2 years of mandatory military service; which I think needs to be completed before you're 21 or something..
Conscription is at 18, and its strictly enforced(3 yrs jail term and a permanent criminal record if you abscond).
So in all eventuality, it seems like this person underwent that military training and hence obviously knew how to use a pistol.

Is it possible that this may have helped in preventing the amount of slaughter seen at Virginia Tech.?

Probably not, but if this law had been passed a year ago it might have made a difference....

Irony is that once this bill was defeated the detractors of the bill claimed that its defeat was a victory for the safety of the college campuses in Virginia. Sad...

How in blazes can someone compare drinving a car to possessing a weapon?
Why do you need a gun for defending yourself?
Esp if you're a 23 year old.. in a urban area??!!
Its not like you're some lone rancher who needs to keep dacoits and tresspassers off with a double barrel rifle..

Really I don't understand.. why is its so easy to buy weapons?
Even foreign nationals can pick them up now?All it takes is a green card?
wtf?

You don't need anything to buy a handgun. I started a thread last week about unregistered handguns. You can go to a gun show and buy a pistol from an unlicensed dealer no questions asked.

Peace

If just one single person, (perhaps a prof), had been armed, they could possibly have stopped this thing cold, before so many people died. That is one good reason to have a gun to defend oneself.

More notes on shooter from Fox News TV.

Immigrated here from South Korea as a child. Birth date Jan 18th 1984, in country age of 8. Valid Greencard. Parents still live in Centerville. Police searched their house.

I think I wrote all that down right while they spoke.

Both are tools which can be used to kill people....

Because criminals have guns, knives, sometimes they are bigger than their victims etc.....

It is not that easy... Before you buy a weapon from any store the store clerk calls in some government agency, not sure who they call I think it's the FBI, he/she gives your name, your social security, a background check is done over the phone and if you check out, you have no priors and you are a legal resident in the U.S. you can buy a weapon.

Now that's a racist comment...

He was a resident... there are residents who are in the military, and btw...most of them have automatic firearms....

I was a U.S. resident when I joined the military.

I've just been doing some research on killed-to-injured ratios. 32 dead and 15 injured yields a ratio better than 2:1, which is a special forces score. Does that level of comptetance put a person into the catergory of "Trained Killer".
If so what was a trained killer doing studying English in Virginia of all places?

Here's a place to start: www.nraila.org...

There are no federal level laws outside of dealer permits and licensing so they vary by state. What I know as the law here in CT is different from the law in VA which is different from the law in DC. The citizens of VA decided their own regulations and limitations. It isnt for the fed to decide how residents of VA should live. The residents of VA, however, have all the right to dictate how the fed should act. We own them. They dont own us.

Gun laws apply to gun shows just as much as they apply to any shop dealers who frequently sell firearms. They also have to call in, I think the FBI, to check in with your information, such as social security number, name, address of residence, and a background check is done over the phone. You have no priors, you are of legal age and have a legal status in the U.S. and then you can buy the weapon.

It is a myth that "there are loopholes in gun shows".

Maybe in the past there was, but for several years they have to abide by the same rules when selling weapons in gunshows.

My opinion is that the VA Tech massacre was a government sponsored, planned and enacted operation just as 911 was. This particular operation was to divert attention from several current events that reflect poorly on the administration, their policies and programs and the war in Iraq.

When you are done with your handwringing, praying, search for the guilty and punishment of the innocent try looking at what the magician is doing with his OTHER hand.

The Killer Was NOT in the korean military. He hasbeen in the us since 1992 and is 23 yr old. So he was 8 yrs old South Korea Shocked. So how did he learn to shoot so well? ort is just that he had easy targets rather than him being a good shooter per say?

Bravo! I was wondering when someone was going to come out and say it!
Same goes for Columbine and the Port Authur Massaccre in Australia.
