A naval surprise

"The first concerns the USS Ronald Reagan, an aircraft-carrier that is at the centre of yet another carrier battle-group that may be heading to the region. The Ronald Reagan left San Diego on 27 January at the head of a powerful force that included the guided missile-cruiser USS Lake Champlain and the guided missile-destroyer USS Russell; both warships are reported to be equipped with scores of sea-launched cruise missiles."

"A third carrier battle-group deployed to the region would be a clear sign that, at the very least, a major show of forces is in prospect; but in another sense, and from a rather different angle, that is beginning to happen already."

This piece dated 8-2-07, and found on openDemocracy, speculates on the possibility of the USS Ronald Reagan Battle Group being re-deployed from duty in the Western Pacific... to the Persian Gulf. Again, at the time this story was written, this appears to have been pure speculation...and personally, I haven't got a clue as to the Reagan's current status.

In my mind this statement appears to build a strong case for the large oil companies actually wanting to go to war with Iran....

All the best,

Those link's all say that they have plenty in reserve, but due to lack of investment now, they may have supply issues in 2015.

That is alot different than "running out of oil"

obviously the Iranians , as the PErsians thousands years ago, think they are a proud and strong nation...They had difficulties fighting with the Iraqis during the 80's , and they think they can be a threat to the US ? LEt me laugh.
Of course the losses in case of war will be very high for the US, but what is 3000 KIAs compared with 50 years of illimited oil ? hm ? I think the next provocation from Iran will be the last one. Anyway, notice that the Israelis are quite silent about all this. They just wait for an opportunity to pull the nuke trigger !

I think that the Iranian leaders had the British marines/sailors kidnapped for a hostage situation. They believe that this will either get their personel returned or more likely, buy them more time to secure their nuke facilities before the impending bombing raids. That the Russians removed their workers from the facilities leads me to think that bombing runs were planned to occur in the near future.

I had a wild thought...I wonder if the mullahs that really control Iran will use this to boot Ahmadinejad?

It would seem like a way to back down from the nuclear issue for now while still saving face.

YEEEEEEEAAAAHHH! A WAAAAAR ! What were you expecting kids ? A wave of love throughout the wolrd. Come on wake up, this century won't make us lose our habits. The difference is that we'll get war on TV live every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner !!!!! maybe we'll recongnize friends (hey, the one who got shot over there is my cousin Paulie !!!! boohoohoo)

WAR relies on the human nature, and PEACE on the human conscience...there's a problem, don't you think?

sigh Blair lets us down again as usual, if Maggie T was still in we would've been bombing Iran by now into submission, but no we need to talk to the terrorists like iamanidiot Iranian president who is a terrorist don't forgot he was part of the terror group who help the USA people hostage.

I feel embarrassed to be British at this time, as we really seem to be light footing around and showing no old British backbone, it just amazes me how things have come to this.

I really think our bombers should be in the air heading toward Tehran and warn Iran about it and give them the ultimatum return our soldiers to us before our bombers reach you and our bombers will return peacefully if not kiss Tehran goodbye.... I bet our soldiers would be returned so fast we wouldn't be able to blink before the got returned.

Also does anyone non Western posting here understand that we British are over there under rules from the UN and that if this is not solved fast not only will it be UK vs Iran it will be UK, EU, USA, Israel VS Iran and probably Syria, and as our Empire is better we will crush your Empire into the ground. Is it true that a French aircraft carrier is moving up? oh yes France is part of EU and an ally of UK. Also the positioning of those rockets by Syria recently looks pretty suspect after this has happened doesn't it?

Take a look at this.....

Confusion over Iran's intentions

This is not the first time Iran has seized British sailors for allegedly intruding into its territorial waters - the same thing happened to eight UK servicemen in 2004.

But this time there are reasons why it could be more serious.

The incident comes just two days after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave an unusually aggressive speech to mark the new Persian year.

He said: "In case the enemies of Iran intend to use force and violence and act illegally, without a doubt the Iranian nation and officials will use all their capabilities to strike the invading enemies."

It was an oddly defiant and hostile tone to strike for a new year speech.

I say we are less than 50 hours away.... and counting....

a little update,

UK denied access to Iran sailors

British requests for access to 15 Royal Navy personnel held by Iran have been denied, the UK has said.

In a meeting in Tehran between Iranian government officials and the UK ambassador, Iran also failed to say where the 15 were being held.

Minister Peter Hain said the seizure of the eight sailors and seven marines, from HMS Cornwall, was "very serious".

news.bbc.co.uk...

IF its true that the location is now unknown, we are being denied contact, then expect diplomatic ties to be cut very soon.

We could see some military action within afew days, we've called our troops back from Bosnia and have a large stand by force in Germany. Of course, invasion is not going to happen, but I think we may see fighting along the border follow by some sort of air attack.

I have this funny feeling that the captured troops are no longer in Iran.

The Times of 18th March published an article where the president of Iran is quoted as threatening to kidnap "blue-eyed, blond-haired Europeans" in response to an alleged kidnap of revolutionalry guards inside Iraq. This makes this kidnap a pre-meditated act of war.

Excellent point blobby

Has Syria said anything about this? I am interested to know what is going on Syria regarding this, especially since them and Iran have been accused of helping the violence in Iraq.

We will know what action will happen when the Iranian government gives its public statement on Monday.

Iran would be insane to start a war. No one believes Iran could win a conventional war with the west. They don't have the logistical capability for a prolonged event. They depend too much on foreign equipment. Now could they get Syria involved? Well whats in it for them? As far as the west invading Iran, well if I was Iran,my concern would be more with Israel.

Concerning with Israel means concerning with West.
But I also dont share your opinion that Iran looses a conventional war. First, to a war against Iran will only joun U.S and England. I am sure Europe will not involve in this. Second, underestimating Iran is the most fatal mistake. All empires in history has lost very crucial wars against Persians, and after they loose these empires collapsed. Roman empire and Ottoman empire are good examples.
Of course U.S can drop a few atom bomb and win the war, but this will mean the end of the world too..
I hope there will never be a war against Iran.

There will be, many Iranians know the next war is with America (watched a program on Channel four about it)

plus, can I point out (again) that the troops are British and the Country they're from is called the United Kingdom. Not England

England has not been a country since 1707.

Bush is more likely to get political and equipement support to the British and the European Union. I cannot see no American troops getting involved. Unless Iran decides to capture some Americans (which would be suicide)

Great spot, blobby! Is this the article you were referring to?

www.timesonline.co.uk...
IRAN is threatening to retaliate in Europe for what it claims is a daring undercover operation by western intelligence services to kidnap senior officers in its Revolutionary Guard.

“We’ve got the ability to capture a nice bunch of blue-eyed blond-haired officers and feed them to our fighting cocks,” he said. “Iran has enough people who can reach the heart of Europe and kidnap Americans and Israelis.
