So I wanted to check this out another way and I remembered that the actual owner of the ATS is The Above Network, LLC.

Then I tried going to that website and it's blank... Link

Then I did a whois for the umbrella website and that expired in April this year, on the 9th. whois

So it looks like this will expire as well, if The Above Network hasn't had any updates or activity.

That’s not a good omen
. 10 days of darkness? Even though there is the alternative to go to, it’s still a damn depressing feeling ATS will be no more…

I'm thinking it expired on April 9th...with, I assume, a month grace period for renewal.
That was likely met on May 9th.

The whois website updated the status on 5/9. They may be doing it weekly.

The website expired last month on April 9.

I believe that that could have been the date/period that the domain changed hands after the sale/purchase. In any case, it's an administrative update of the Whois registration record that isn't necessarily correlated either to the domain registration, nor to the hosting agreement and their respective expiry dates. It could simply be an update of the owner's personal information; be it a telephone number, address, etc.

From what I understand, and I may be incorrect, but I don't believe TAN was sold in the acquisition. Only the website.

TAN would still own copyright if it wasnt included in the sale...

As long as there's an archive at all, I don't really care where and who hosts it. I just don't want all of this to be lost.

www.whois.com...

I see this site expiring on May 18, 2024, but I wouldn't be surprised if they get a 31-day grace period. I have no idea but this is what I am seeing.

Okay, so the "end" is nigh, right?. Arguably (8) days away.

So, let's put this into perspective...

The owners of the data have those many days to do something. After that, the value of their data diminishes by the hour, if not the minute. Why would anyone (with any sense) let this bargaining power go away? This said, why would anyone on the internet, ATS members aside, want to buy it???

This concept is, in and of itself, a huge leverage point. If ATS was a physical island like Epstein island which people could occupy and live on it would be one thing, but it is not. ATS is a logical island which exists on the interwebz; noone can live on ATS island. When it is gone, it will be gone

To throw away the legacy of what ATS was, and what it has become, is...in my opinion...a serious mistake, but it is not for me to say.

I only throw this out there, knowing how complicated all of this is, as a consideration of restraint is not the better part of valor in this particular case.

Hint...don't wait until the last day, whomever your are, because then many of us who care, will be powerless to do anything.

Have a great day.

edit - I mention Epstein island only because it is controversial (of the highest order), and much the same as the mystery of the downfall of this site. Perhaps there are more similarities than differences in the end. But, it is up to you, (owners), to answer this question. My hope in this answer is waning.

I've always maintained that ATS, the data and hosting, is to be considered separate and distinct from the domain name... at least from a business point of view.

If I were a sort of url aficionado, I would only want the name. I would then rebrand my own island with it based on its popularity, hit-wise, and that it's a cool name .com. For this reason, the domain name probably commands a high purchase price and the owner would have to be a moron, broke or deceased to let it slip from their hands and default to the first auction bid.

Having said that, to a true fan of ATS as a long-lived Community and knowledge base, the value of the whole package is worth more than the sum of its parts.

If ATS goes down the drain it will be due to the high hosting costs, not because the domain name isn't renewed for what amounts to the cost of a fast food meal.

I hear you, but hosting costs are really not that high either.

Hell, I could do it at my house. I have multiple high speed IP lines coming in (1Gbps), an uninterruptable power supply, a good friend that's an electrician and a good size generator that I got a as a gift from my Dad in case the power goes out.

I think the shutdown has very little to do with cost and much more to do with "I don't give a sh#t anymore" or spite for some reason on the part of the new owners....whoever they are.

Idiots.

Here, directly from the horse's mouth, is what it took to run ATS at its height of popularity...

I believe the hosting costs rise exponentially with the increased bandwidth/traffic to the site. I remember in another thread S.O. said the monthly running costs ran into the thousands.

However, I agree that the loss of interest by the owner is crucial to ATS's survival.

... which is why I think that the absentee owners aren't going to renew the domain name. They don't seem to care at all so why would they continue to pay thousands a month to keep this place up and running.

I've always sustained that the owner is only interested in the domain name, so that's why I believe it will be renewed. The site could be pulled at any time, but the name would live on in a new guise or parked and sold to the highest bidder at a later date.
