No. We're not sure about anything. Everything related to the site itself is speculation, because WE AREN'T BEING TOLD ANYTHING. If we were, we'd share it. If I get up tomorrow and can log in, yay. If I can't, then that's that.

I understand. But that is just so ridiculous as to be almost beyond belief.

Well, for what it's worth, your efforts and the efforts of the other mods that are still around are appreciated.

Thank you!

I could post that on virtually every thread on the site.

Thanks. Staff also appreciates the members, or we wouldn't still be here.

I second both those statements.

Third?

Hey, we're still here. We will do as we always have for as long as we can. The members (including us) will do all they can for as long as they want.

That's all there is.

And that's enough.

Hopefully, we all will be able to continue to do so.

Many members have been here decades. I have been a member since 2003, and was shortly thereafter made a moderator then super mod.

After over a decade of that, I was returned to member status due to my abrasive disposition for a short time.

Quite fond of being a member again, because my personal opinion and statements are not attacked as being a voice of the site. I made it clear, the difference between my official acts as a mod versus contributing as a member.

However many people were and are still, unable to separate the two.

ATS does not pay it's volunteer staff.

So my advice is, be nice to the staff we still have.
They are over loaded with maintaining discourse.

If you want ATS to continue thriving, stand with the ATS staffers and have their back, as they would yours.

We are a self Governed site, respect is key.

Show it, and you'll receive it.

I am sure there are psychological and sociological sciences that would tell us that somewhere along the lines of being a moderator and member, the two can't help but merge into one anywhere an iota of power over others is in the mix.

It's fairly easy to keep them separate, at least for oneself: Staff aren't allowed to moderate in any threads in which they participate. When staff moderates, they do so as measured against the T&Cs, not their own views.

I think what ADVISOR is talking about is that he was able to keep these things apart, but members unfairly judged him and accusations were made that he was biased. Staff sometimes wears

to underline the view that we're speaking as members not moderators. I personally -- as a member and a moderator -- think that ADVISOR was unfairly judged, however that is not something I could or can influence, nor do I wish to debate it with anyone. What I do know is that I trust ADVISOR. A great many things take place out of member view which cannnot and should not be adjudicated in the member forums. Someday you may look up and see me stripped of moderator status, or even BANNED. If that happens, don't ask me about it. I will never say and there is no value in getting yourself wrapped up also. Something has happened that is not for your purview.

Well. That was MUCH more somber than I intended. I began wanting to express support for a former staff member.

It was very weird. Our area was at about 98%. And I had read that the sun is SOOOO bright that anything less that 100% would not look like darkness.
It looked a bit like an approaching storm, but that isn't quite it either.

Most of the light that created shadows looked like white light like from a fluorescent street lamp.
It looked almost like twilight, not quite that dark.
Maximum dimness lasted about 10 minutes.

I'm right in the total eclipse path so we got the 100% at about 3PM local time. It was very cool, but not like nighttime dark. You know how you'll see one of those schlocky B&W movies from the 50s where they used a filter to simulate night but shot in daylight because it was cheaper? Not exactly like that, but close. Really weird.

The mod tags above are just for lulz purposes. I'll still mod the Hell out of this thread if I have to.

You were in the Goldilocks zone. We had about .30 totatlity, which means that you had to be wearing eclipse glasses to tell the difference. Guess what? Virtually NOBODY down here cared about it. Not surprising.

p.s. We're really off-topic. I think this is much of the new wave of ATS moderation.

I am envious, but not envious enough to throw myself and my Darlin' into the path of human strangeness. I also want to show my Darlin' the Aurora Borealis, but not willing to have to cavort into all manner of human weirdness to do so.

Solar eclipses are more cool, imo. Lunar eclipses are sort of the soft set of the Solar. It's an amazing thing to think of a travelling SHADOW of the MOON. WOW! I don't understand exactly why people are freaking out about it, but fully understand why people want to be a part of it. I watched MSNBC this morning and saw two bearded guys who were married today at Niagra Falls. I thought they both looked very peaceful and full of promise. Niagra Falls today enjoyed the most tourism dollars of any time in the past.

I really hope nobody dies today as a result of the profound traffic. If I were near the path of totality, I think I'd use a highway system parallel of it and choose a wee town just outside the line.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

all de rules have changed, no? But still, we are good people who use good values, and judge on the basis of the beloved T&Cs, even though the new owners don't apparently care enough to talk with us. It honors the foundation of the site, apart from the people who once owned it, or those that now do.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

When one person judges another person well that judgement can be questioned and debated, but when many people point out the same issue(s) with one person, well it is more likely the problem lies with that person, but having said that, ATS has special considerations that also need to be taken into account. It would be nice if members had a 'suggestion box' or an outlet where we could have certain question answered about certain moderators or review their behaviour in specific situations. This would open up intel, so to speak, if bias is present, because everyone is biased to a degree.

Beware! Possible consequences include:

1. Human sacrifice.
2. Dogs and cats living together.
3. Mass hysteria.

Thus we must remain ever vigilant to avoid... wait, that's already happening.

Right. Carry on, then.
