Buddha statues have an entirely different significance because without them nobody would have known that buddhism ever was a thing in the Afghanistan area.
If you have good historic records, which we do, and documents, which we also have, those big stone thingies don't serve the same purpose as they do in archeology with the ancients and up to the late middle ages mostly.
