Old with the old and in with the new...cultural icons.

Did you just compare George Washington with the Kardashians?

Ordinarily, I am dead against the statue removers but, reading this gave me a much better appreciation about why some of them should be got rid of.

free sauce

And if that statue was removed, all that history would be locked away, safely from any and all who might learn from it. Bravo.

History is apparently like math, hard and racist and impossible to comprehend.

More like Columbus with Columbo.

I get you don't understabnd the hurt seeing it awakens in people affected by the man's crimes.
I always struggled with that too, but that article really opened my eyes to the whole thing.

I totally get that a descendant of slavery would see the horror of that time period in the art. it makes sense. But to lock it away and ignore it won't change a #ing thing. To have it out in the open and talk about it, allow new generations to learn from the mistakes of past generations and teach why we don't do things like this anymore is the way forward. To ignore it, hide it away, and hope nobody has to look at it ever again, will likely produce the same lesson down the line once we regress far enough. Unless you are of the mindset that we are progressing into some utopian dream.

Tearing down the past not to make way for the future, but to ignore it is a horrible way forward.

Are you seriously suggesting there is anyone alive who was hurt by the m ans crimes?

The best way to learn history is to repeat it, then it's really fresh in your mind.

Like doing slavery again so we know what it is?

Just my two cents on updating cultural icons (which is what a statue is):
I think it is actually not really a sign of the end of the world but a natural process as the population develops, or dare I say: changes the icons of that culture get replaced/renewed/reinterpreted.

I think the everyday space needs new imagery to go with the times.
I don't promote the destruction, but put them in a place where you can look at them if they're real art - or I mean it is probably well documented so it's not so special that it actually is a great loss as long as we keep the record.

The outrage as if you ever gave a thought about those statues is a little funny. They haven't mattered for a while now you probably don't walk past them and think 'Yes you (the statue) give me my American Identity' every day or ever do you?

I don't live in New York, so it's none of my business.

Keep 'em, move 'em, tear 'em down; I don't care.

The statue of Liberty now, I might have a problem if someone wanted that moved. But didn't the Ghost Busters do that already?

The Marists are tearing down Washington's statues and will probably put Lenin in it's place.

If George's statue has to be removed because he owned slaves, shouldn't our VO be removed because she comes from a family of slave owners?

I'd send you my dollars if I still had any to spare after the last three years of our 'BBB' booming economy, but I'm tapped out.
Will you take an IOU, contingent on the outcome in 2024?

How long should it take to stop being hurt by stuff?

How many years do you think it should be before one of Hitler's water colours can hang in the Knesset?

taking this IS theme of removing heritage to its natural next level, Stonehenge is well past its sell by date and could make some gravel for paths and there are some stupid walls built by romans that'd make a nice rockery for someone as they've been doing nothing for near 2,000 years,as is proved its all worthless stuff with no cultural value..

you'll be first in demanding most of the buildings and statues in england be removed them then as all of them will cause offense and hurt someone somewhere even cathedral cities like Hereford would cause hurt by existing.
