The difference is huge.

The story had a few changes by Disney back in 1937 because some material deemed brutal and violent for kids.

Actually the real reason disney remakes all the old stuff is so that they can keep the propriety rights. It's a legal thing. If they don't keep using the characters they lose the rights to them.
