Sure, that would extend the timeframe BUT we are talking about a company that has previously just taken numbers out of their rears, poor quality control, lack of testing in some areas, the limited testing they have done during trials (the CEO went down to ~3000m solo for a couple of hours), so it is questionable where the 96h of life support for 5 people even comes from. Did they extrapolate from the solodive? Did they do a rough estimate? Also, is that just for the oxygen supply or does it include the CO2 & CO scrubbers too?

96h is vague, media is using that as a hard cutoff point, with all the variables & questions about the sub, timeframe may be able to be extended OR, given the CEO's loosey-goosey approach to the rules, they may have already perished, last knocks (if it even was them) was heard yesterday morning? Could be 96h, could be 60h of actual usable life support systems 🤷‍♂️

My goodness, I can't fathom how terrifying this is

5 humans stuck in little submersibles in 12,000 feet deep. Rip.

It could be worse than that. For all we know it could be floating just at the surface. Less than 10 feet from air and no way to get it.

Hate to even ask, as there is such a lack of emergency signal gear, but does this submersible have a die marker so it can be found if it surfaced?

Oh, and I just wanted to check, that women and children first policy.

Now is that only for biological women or can i suddenly decide to become one?

In light of this event I've been watching various deep dive accidents. A recent one was the documentary "Dave not coming back" , as well as the horrible bell accidents on rigs. Terrifying stuff. How in the nine hells could this CEO seemingly purpousfully dodge so many important safety considerations?

gains, it's always gains. This will just keep getting worse, somehow the small business have to see how to compete, which is what we are so proud about considering our economic system.
The price to pay for process due to competition, is human life, too late to complain now...

VLF similar to what the E-6B and E-4B use to communicate with SSBNs underwater. If it's similar to the way the military does it, short code groups that match up with a code book and decode to preset messages.
Thanks for explaining how the military gets more apparent bandwidth out of a low bandwidth communication system, but that VLF is electromagnetic, right?

Electromagnetic VLF is what I guessed the lost sub might use for text message communication, but according to this article, the Titan uses an acoustic system:

Inside Titan

According to the website, Titan communicates with the topside comms and tracking team via text messages which are exchanged via a USBL (ultra-short baseline) acoustic system.
I guess sound travels underwater better than EM radiation but there are limitations to that method too. Making noise for 3 minutes out of every 30 minutes as the Titan passengers have been trained to do should help identify their location, but rescuers are still having trouble finding the source of the noise.

They are about out of time, it's supposed to run out of air or oxygen about now, though if the passengers got really cold they might use air at a lower rate than normal. The search continues anyway.

The firm Magellan from the UK had initially offered to help with the search for this missing submersible earlier this week on Monday. But was reportedly blocked by the US authorities.

Now according to several news reports, the offer of help has finally been accepted as of several hours ago.

The trouble is, that apparently it'll now take them 40 hours to get there. Another news article was saying even longer than that.

Sounds like a a case of too little too late to me. Why the delays, and why didn't they accept the help sooner as this kit could of been there by now and already helping with the search??

Not saying this thing is going to field any results, but sounds like a screw up to me.

That's not a very good summary of what this story says:

US shoots down UK firm’s offer to help in search for Titanic sub as experts urge 11th-hour rethink

the US Coast Guard, US Navy, Canadian Coast Guard and OceanGate Expeditions - is “not planning on requesting Magellan” because of “how far out that vessel would be from the area needed”.
That implies it wouldn't have been there in time for rescue operations, doesn't it? But now that it's probably more search and recovery than search and rescue, maybe they still want to find the sub even though the rescue time has passed, so it's not exactly the same mission.

Agreed it does imply they wouldn't of been there in time. But, my point is, why not just let them set off anyway. Setting of Monday morning would of had them here around mid day yesterday. (Still not sure why it takes so long though, considering you can fly from the UK in about 6.5 - 7 ish hours. Logistics of heavy equipment no doubt involved etc.

Now they are accepting help when the oxygen has all but ran out. So in essence they won't be there until Saturday / Sunday now would they? Meaning the air is long gone and they will now as you said, be carrying out a search and recovery operation.

Should they not just of accepted the offer of help when it was first offered, rather than waiting until its too late anyway? Might as well of, and carried on about there own business searching for the submersible whilst waiting for other kit to arrive.

The only reason I can think of, other than just being complete asshats, is maybe they already knew the truth, with the rumors of hearing an implosion, and just made the appearance of searching in the allotted time frame (the amount of air they had left) to keep hope alive for everyone watching the media? (or to protect HOW they heard the implosion, as has been suggested, secret tech)

And now that the time is up, they actually know where it is, but need help recovering it?

Just a thought.

The number of uninformed, hate-filled little communist dirtbags celebrating the (presumed) deaths of these people because they're rich is disgusting. And they think they're compassionate and tolerant.

You are among the most narrow-minded, ignorant people on Earth.

You could be academically honest and throw in the little slice of life acknowledging that to become a billionaire being a nice person is not in the same plan.

Spoken like a true, uninformed, hate-filled little commie. Stalin would be proud.

Could be on to something there.

Just out of interest, does anyone know, how long is it until search and rescue parties usually call of searches?

They don't operate off of a preset timeline because every case is unique.

Depends on the situation. We lost a helicopter and a crewman. We stopped searching late the following day. I figure that they will send an ROV to investigate the noise that they are hearing and if it turns out to be nothing, that's it.
