Except that Aegis Ashore doesn't diminish their nuclear capabilities. The missiles used can't intercept an ICBM, unless they hit it in the boost
phase, which they can't at that range. It can only be used against cruise missiles, and short ranged missiles. It's going to be years before they
can even think about touching an ICBM. They've only just performed the first test with the SM-6 and Aegis BMD against an ICBM representative target.
The current Aegis Ashore uses the SM-3, which is effective against theater ranged weapons only. And nuclear weapons aren't exactly defensive
weapons.
