A little chink of light for the Ukrainian people as Putin orders a 36-hour ceasefire to observe Orthodox Christmas which falls on 6 to 7 of January , Ukraine is yet to say if it will reciprocate but a couple of days off may do them all some good.

Russia will cease fire in Ukraine on Orthodox Christmas - Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the Russian defence minister to cease fire in Ukraine over Orthodox Christmas, the Kremlin said today.

The Russian military will observe a 36-hour cease-fire in Ukraine from noon on 6 January to midnight on 7 January.

Many Orthodox Christians, including those living in Russia and Ukraine, celebrate Christmas on 6 to 7 January.

An official statement from the Kremlin posted on the Telegram app read: "Instructions of the President of the Russian Federation to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation

"Taking into account the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I instruct the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation to introduce from 12:00 January 6, 2023 until 24:00 January 7, 2023, a ceasefire along the entire line of contact between the parties in Ukraine.

"Based on the fact that a large number of citizens professing Orthodoxy live in the combat areas, we call on the Ukrainian side to declare a ceasefire and give them the opportunity to attend services on Christmas Eve, as well as on the Day of the Nativity of Christ."

Ukraine won't honour the ceasefire. They've been persecuting the Orthodox Church for years.

A new report from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights concludes that some civil authorities of Ukraine harass and persecute the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The UN and other international rights organizations have recognized the persecution of the UOC several times over the past several years. The latest report was delivered at the 51st Session of the UN Human Rights Council, which ended on Friday in Geneva, reports the Information-Education Department of the UOC.

Just gives him time to regroup. This is a good time to attack, then Putin can cry that Ukraine is unfair.

Ah, but it also gives the Ukrainians time to regroup. I'm waiting for the posters to come on with "Putins a liar, he wont keep his word".

As with most religions there is a schism within the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.
When Ukraine was part of Russia it came under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate but when Ukraine gained independence jurisdiction of The Ukrainian Orthodox Church was granted to the Kyiv Patriarchate by the overseeing body of Orthodox Churches.
Russia didn't like that, still doesn't.

The Kremlin funded Militia's that were agitating throughout Luhansk and Donbas in the years prior to the invasion often targeted Ukrainian Orthodox worshippers attending churches that didn't recognise the authority of the Moscow Patriarchate.

I have absolutely no doubt that followers of The Moscow Patriarchate were targeted etc by their Ukrainian counterparts.

Its an all too common occurrence where organised religions are concerned.

Not an excuse but just a bit of an explanation.

That would explain the article I posted about the Ukrainian authorities persecuting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Wouldn't it?

I don't know, how is that supposed to explain it? I just wanted to correct you because in your previous post you said they've been persecuting the Orthodox Church.

Back in WW2, the Nazis didn't care much for the church either. It appears they still don't.

Is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church not an Orthodox Church?

I'm pretty sure it is.

Who's trolling?

You even agreed, when you said:

It is, that's my point. It's just one faction of the Orthodox church, not the whole church.

a reply to: AndyFromMichigan

I mean Germany never had many Orthodox people, mostly Protestant and a bit Catholic I think. So the church was foreign to them. But in Ukraine it's split into pro-Ukraine and pro-Russia churches.

Correct.

Did you think it was the whole church?

Who said that?

Not me.

That's right, I never claimed you said it was the whole church. Only that you said Ukraine has been persecuting it.
