Now you need to retract your statement about ME not knowing how it is in a natural disaster. Hurricane HUGO,without power/water/food 2 to 4 weeks. WInter storm a while back 1 week,no power, water, little scarce food. I know EXACTLY how it is to be desperate for food, water. not ONCE did we EVER try to steal or loot ANYONE. We would had starved first and just about did. eating bark and drinking rain water until the Red cross came in after hugo.

SO do not even try to say I do not know how it is. Stealing is wrong no matter the reason for it. IF they feel they need to steal, then I feel the need to stop them.

We were pretty desperate ourselves up in NJ during a few of the major hurricanes / floods -
And you are SO right, we did not steal from anyone, or even think about it - no heat / hot water or power for weeks, and just had to deal with it.
It's the lowlife mentality that lives / leeches / grubs off the unsuspecting.

It doesn't matter how YOU see it.

It matters how the law sees it. It seems the law is on the side of the victim in Florida, as it should be.

Strong words coming from the Governor there. As a right wing gun owner and Trump voter, I don’t think those words should have ever come out of his mouth. I wouldn’t want to pull the trigger and take someone’s life for stealing any number of televisions. Its just not worth taking a life over, EVER. The looters are scum, yes, and should be punished, but we are talking about the highest ranking government official giving the ok to kill people he swore to protect.

Let’s all take a step back and reevaluate his words here.

He could have said "Don't loot and we won't shoot" instead. It's much less aggressive sounding.

THAT DOESN'T WORK IN THE REAL WORLD OF " A HUNGRY MAN IS A DANGEROUS MAN ". Strong action is always needed or we simply won't survive as a modern day society.

Fascist gonna fascist, I guess. So much for the rule of law.

Probably should have opened fire on the J6 insurrectionists who attacked the Capitol, if we're talking about shooting law breakers in the act...

Yes sir reeee Bob.

All those criminals in the big cities shooting like crazy every minute of every day 😊

And of course the Fascist Floyd Riots -- the biggest riot string in U.S. History 😊

Yes sir reeee Bob

Fully agreed. Also, when you need diapers for a baby, maybe it is better to stay out of harms way. One should go for safe routes and places, not stay in the disaster zone with a vulnerable baby.

And then, there are ways to get it done without mass fabricated diapers, a simple cloth sheet is enough, one can learn how to tie it very easy. Like you wrote, before diapers, there were ways too.

Food and water. Is my moral line in the sand. I would not deprive my enemy of either.
That is actually a law of war.

But? They don't need my television, radio or the catalytic converter off my truck to "survive/live".
If they're going to work for that? They can work for money, and get their own.

I don't have any emotion for idiots, that die, trying to steal something they can't eat. None.

I would never kill anyone, stealing food or water.
Don't get me wrong, they're going to earn it, if I catch them. But I ain't going to kill them.

Also don't believe that I am ignorant enough to believe, that someone/people, would not kill me for my food or water.

Food, water and shelter from weather.
If I have it? I will give you half of what I have. I don't care if you tried to kill me yesterday. Depending on how good you tried, honestly. ...But, after I disarm you,
I will "save" you.

Best thing? Would be to ask me nicely. I'd probably just give you food and water, if I have it and you don't mind a .45 between your eyes,... till you move away.

That would save me a lot of hassle.

Yea I am prepared to jump through the hoops...mags empty and fresh box of ammo all sealed up in a hard case with TSA approved locks...so many steps and yes even then they give you flak. Its almost like some of them just want to dissuade you because of some personal reasons or something...

Yea not sure why people get the idea that you can just got straight to blaming. You usually do the whole stop/freeze bit. Then if they try to run with the stolen items or attack you...its blaming time. Some places won't allow you to legally blam someone for theft but others like FL do. I would think most folks wouldn't walk up and just shoot without attempting to tell them to stop and ask what they're doing.

And that's why the law has "words" like burglary, robbery, theft, larceny, looting, etc.

We need him as the next President. He is the best Governor that we have ever had. If you've noticed, you don't hear much talk from Democrats. Why? Because Reps, and Dems actually mostly get along in this state. Why? because of this Governor.

You're right of course. I like the first one better myself too. "You Loot and we shoot" gets the message across and there is no mistaking what it means and says to potential looters.

The law sees each one of those crimes in your list as a potential reason to shoot. IT doesn't matter if you don't.

I think there is some basic misunderstanding of the situation. Andy and Barney have more to do than make sure Otis closed his cell to sleep it off. Essentially it is a limited timeframe of Without Rule Of Law (WROL). Many people have the idea of scavenge and survive when the SHTF. Bad idea. You will be considered a looter (especially if considered an outsider) and shot on sight. Some communities won’t let you enter, period. Even if you have items to barter. You will be shot forcing your way in, so don’t try it.

What I am saying is that if you are in that situation. You have to be aware. Don’t do anything to set people off. Don’t load yourself down with junk to look like a target for opportunists. There is safety in numbers. But watch who you partner up with as well.

Is shooting people for the hell of it against the law in a disaster? Yes. Will they face the law for shooting you? Doesn’t matter if you are dead. Hurricanes don’t just suddenly appear like tornadoes. You had time to gather what you needed for evacuation, sheltering in place or relocation after the fact. It doesn’t take huge sums of money to put some bottles of water, cans of tuna and some other supplies in a pillowcase and tie it off.

Of course it matters, and I'm not defending looters. But a home invasion is a more dangerous and life threatening situation that a group of teenagers looting bags of chips and cigarettes at a Walgreens or TVs from Walmart.

The problem I'm seeing in this thread up to page 4 is that people here are conflating the act of stealing valuable property during a catastrophe with scavenging and salvaging survival goods from the wreckage. The first is looting. It has been called as such for centuries. The other is scavenging and salvaging for survival.

When did it become wrong to defend your property from those who believe that what's yours is, in some reality, theirs?

I'm not risking the safety of my family, period. Come unwanted into my home, and you're very likely to leave feet first.
