Oh yeah. When the Soviets pulled out of East Germany, everything from uniforms to Kalashnikovs could be had for very low prices. What a wild time that was.

Cheers

And we are trading back the very person who made a KILLING doing that. The lord of war himself.

Its true Russia no longer has the ability to produce its own tech. For example, they can't even build cars because they don't have the parts.

They are also done in space which is why I really don't understand the decision to leave the international space station the only one it hurts is the Russians. They cant even produce rockets without western help.

Seems like peace loving Putin now wants to stir up trouble in Kosovo.

First it was Russia having issues producing Tanks... Then it was high precision (as they call it) missiles.. Now they are having issues producing top of the line military aircraft...

1 August Update

Key Takeaways

* ISW assesses that Russian forces were responsible for the July 28 attack on the Olenivka prison that killed 53 Ukrainian POWs; two anonymous US officials confirmed that there is no evidence that Ukrainian forces used US-provided HIMARS, some of the only munitions Ukraine has that are precise enough to do the kind of limited damage seen in satellite and other imagery, to strike the prison.

* Russian forces are transferring elements of the Eastern Military District (EMD) from the Slovyansk area to support defensive positions along the Southern Axis.

* Russian forces did not conduct any offensive operations north of Slovyansk or around Siversk.

* Russian forces conducted unsuccessful ground assaults on settlements south and southeast of Bakhmut.

* Russian proxy authorities did not claim any territorial gains near Avdiivka as Russian forces launched unsuccessful ground assaults on Avdiivka and Pisky.

* Russian regional officials are reportedly failing to provide promised payments to the “Atal” Volunteer Battalion of the Republic of Chuvashia.

* The Kremlin is likely prioritizing propaganda and sham referenda over the welfare of Ukrainian civilians in occupied Ukrainian territories.

* Russian occupation forces are likely increasing efforts to deter and suppress partisan movements in occupied territories as partisan attacks on Russian officials and Ukrainian collaborators continue.

I've been holding onto this one for a while, not really having the time to post it and defend it from what I suspect will be a bunch of whatabouts. But now seems like a pretty good time as we are closing in on 6 months since Russia started a full blown invasion and war in Ukraine. This is a study done in April 2014, right at the beginning of the Russian hostilities in the Donbas region and shortly after the Ukrainian gov managed to almost squash the separatist movements plaguing the area. It also occurred before the Azov Battalion was formed, so they are not being referenced when Nationalists and radicals are being mentioned.

Now before I post it, I acknowledge that there are lies, damn lies and statistics.

I want to highlight a few of the sections of this survey, which really kinda puts to bed this imaginary notion of the East of Ukraine wanted to be part of Russia and that the Russians invaded back in 2014 to protect the peoples of the region.

This questions focuses on whether Yanukovych was considered president after the euromaidan protests..

Do you consider Viktor Yanukovych to be a legitimate President of Ukraine?

Donetsk Oblast Certainly, yes: 18.8 Rather, yes: 13.6
Luhansk Oblast: Certainly yes: 12.2 Rather yes: 15.4

So about 1/3 in Donetsk and less than 30% in Luhansk thought he was the legit president.

Do you support actions of those, who with arms capture administrative buildings in your region?
Donetsk Oblast Certainly yes: 9.4 Rather yes 8.7 Certainly no: 53,2

Luhansk Oblast Certainly yes: 12.2 Rather yes: 12.2 Certainly no: 39.2

So in both Oblasts, far more people did not support the actions of Girkin and his ilk.

Remember that meme of the Ukrainian peoples of the Donbas wanted to secede from their own country?

Do you support the idea, that your region should secede from Ukraine and join Russia?

Donbas Oblast Certainly yes : 11.9 Rather yes: 15.6
Luhansk Oblast Certainly yes: 13.2 Rather yes 17.1

So less than 30% in both Oblasts thought this was the way forward.

Do you agree that Russia rightly protects the interests of Russian-speaking citizens in the South-East of Ukraine?

Donbas Oblast Yes: 47
Luhansk Oblast Yes: 44.2

So in both Oblasts this sentiment held a highly positive view with close to 50% in each Oblast agreeing.

In the case of incursion of Russian troops into the South-East of Ukraine, you are going to…?
Donetsk Oblast: Welcome the deployment of Russian troops 12.6 Join the army of Russian Federation 3.5
Luhansk Oblast: Welcome the deployment of Russian troops 11.7 Join the army of Russian Federation 2.5

These results line up with the sentiment earlier of the % of people who felt the region should secede and join Russia. The telling part is that the amount of people who responded by saying they would fight against Russia are about the same as the % of those that would fight with them or welcome them, something that pretty much played out during the whole early part of this Russian invasion back in 2014.

The recruitment of overage 'volunteers', criminals, non-Russian nationals, and mercenaries is an explosive mix. Putin is rolling the dice and hoping for "boxcars", but he may come up with "snake eyes".

Russia are now accusing the US of direct involvement-

Russia has accused the US of direct involvement in the war in Ukraine for the first time.
A spokesperson for Moscow's defence ministry alleged the US was approving targets for American-made Himars artillery used by Kyiv's forces.
Lt Gen Igor Konashenkov said intercepted calls between Ukrainian officials revealed the link.
The BBC could not independently verify this.
There was no immediate comment on the allegation from US officials.

Just like their pilots flew in combat against US forces during the Korean War ?

Russian state doesn't seem to understand the rules they play by can be turned against them.

"Speaking to The Telegraph's British journalists, Skibitsky admitted that "before rocket launches, there are consultations between intelligence officials from both countries, which allow Washington to stop any potential attacks if they were unhappy with the intended target".

What's wrong with that?

If the US were directly involved, then russia woiuld be feeling it. Despit their attempt to redefine words, at best, that is indirect involvement. They dont want direct involvement by the US military...if they think thigs are going bad right now....

The Americans and Brits have openly said from the start they were sharing intelligence with Ukraine leadership.

For sure the Yanks are directly involved in Ukraine. They've been involved since 1991 one way or another, indeed before too in forcing the Saudi to cripple the price of crude thus crashing the Soviet economy. Direct involvement in the 2014 coup cookie bar Newlands etc.

You can take any conflict going on around the planet since the 1960's and the Yanks will be involved in it one way or another. Yet same for Russia and now China too.

While the Yanks control Zelensky and fund, train and fuel his war machine, I have no doubt whatsoever China is supplying Russia through the back door with the same. Iran too will be supplying drones. I'd bet the Cubans too.

Same old same old. Nothing has changed and nothing will change.

Ten years from now there will be some new Syria, Ukraine, Six Day War, Nam, Korea type playing field to play the proxy war game and the same named countries will be playing.

"War machine"?

Zelensky is defending a sovereign nation against an invading aggressor.

Do you think Ukraine should just roll over and become another Putin puppet state, against the manifest will of the Ukrainian people?

Ha OC I gave up giving a monkey months ago over this that and the other when dealing with a war that is another people's business. All I do is gaze at the events and make no judgement. Totally out of my hands and controlled by the major powers. They will decide the outcome, as per usual with proxy war games.

"War machine" as you query, well yes the Ukranians have a war machine that is developing fast trained, supplied and directed effectively by the English speaking nations, French and a few others too. A war machine that is developing fast and is getting pretty effective now compared to half a year ago. Far stronger than before the current war, thanks to the 'West' and their proxy wars

2 August Update

Key Takeaways

* Unconfirmed social media reports suggest that Iran may have sent the first batch of drones to Russia and sent pilots and maintenance personnel to train on the Russian Su-35, potentially suggesting that Iran may seek to use recent aviation agreements to facilitate the acquisition of Russian combat aircraft.

* Russian forces conducted unsuccessful offensive operations northeast and northwest of Kharkiv City.

* Russian forces conducted limited ground attacks northwest of Slovyansk and east of Siversk.

* Russian forces made marginal gains southeast of Bakhmut and continued offensive operations to the northeast and southeast of Bakhmut.

* Russian forces made incremental advances around Avdiivka and are continuing attempts to push southwest of Avdiivka.

* Russian forces launched two assaults in northern Kherson Oblast and are continuing to redeploy troops to the Southern Axis.

* Russian federal subjects are forming new volunteer battalions in Novosibirsk, Saratov, Ulyanovsk, and Kurgan Oblasts, and are changing time periods for enlistment compensations.

* Ukrainian civilians are continuing to resist the Russian occupation with acts of civil disobedience and partisan sabotage as the Kremlin considers longer-term methods of population control in occupied Ukraine.
