pomace olive oil for frying. it has a higher smoking temp.

extra virgin for dresssings, marinades and a butter substitute when possible.

like mashed potato's, veggies. i also sub plain greek yoghurt for sour cream.

Growing sunflowers is super easy. There is an invasive species called jerusalem artichoke or sun choke. It's a root vegetable that grows like a weed with giant sunflowers.

This plant is so hardy that you can keep the roots in the ground during below 0 temps and it is just fine. In fact if you ever grow any do it in a container or you will have a hell of a time keeping it from taking over your yard.

The roots taste kinda like a potato and it makes a ton of sunflower seeds.

Not yet.

But give us another couple thousand years with a verity of foods available all the time and our bodies will adapt.

Going back in time for us even now would be hell on our guts.

No the Mrs generally makes things like Pancakes as opposed to myself, i just got put on the spot coz she was doing something else. LoL

But ive managed to pull flour out the wrong cupboard which has somehow managed to remain from 2014.

The weird thing is we have moved house since 2014, so we must have moved it with us.

As to food poisoning, yes ive had that a few times in life, the real version, not much fun from both ends(Seafood).

Anyroad we are all good and the flour binned, so im calling no harm no foul.

It depends on what you are cooking and how. Olive oil has a relatively low smoke point so frying with it is not the best idea. Use peanut oil for frying, lard or pure vegetable oil if you need to, as peanut oil can get pricey. For cooking purposes I also keep a jar of bacon grease, which includes clear drippings from sausage or pancetta also. I strain it before putting it in the jar. When cooled in the fridge it looks like pure white frosting. It renders beautifully and the flavor is excellent.

Olive oil is good for lighter cooking, or as-is on pasta, seasoned bread, etc. I typically buy larger containers of decent olive oil and make my own infusions as well. Put together a small sachet of wild mushrooms, fresh herbs, whatever you like, and put it in with the olive oil. Just make sure its clean and fresh when you do it so no spoilage occurs. I sometimes use a dried wild mushroom blend which also works very well. One of my favorites is a light olive oil/saffron infusion. It has an amazing delicate flavor. I also do one with saffron and some red pepper flakes and a sliver of ginger for a little zing. That one is a fan favorite as well.

Do NOT use olive oil or any other light oil to season cast iron cookware. The best tip I have for that is to use Crisco high-temp cooking spray after a thorough cleaning. Get the iron hot, very hot. Remove from heat, apply a good coating of the spray, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then wipe away the excess with a wadded paper towel. It will look like new and work beautifully. If it doesn't, it was probably not sufficiently cleaned first. No worries though. You can do it as many times as you need to in order to get the desired results.

Not in the slightest bit interested.

I'm afraid you will simply have to hop along and hump someone else's leg to get your jollies off this evening. x

You're in a world of hurt if you use canola oil to begin with. But then again, look at the lard butt in the video.

That's is the first thing I thought of, yuck canola oil. I know what they mean though.
What I find weird is that a lot of people use oil to cook things that are already greasy and need no oil....

One of the best gifts I ever received was an air fryer, which drove that lesson home very quickly.

Most foods really only need a very small amount of oil, depending on how you cook them. If you are deep frying, of course, that is a different story.

I'm ready to go get one today. I think i'll like it.

Yup, some bare sections on the grocery shelves here, weird stuff sometimes..potato chips?? not a great situation.

We have an air fryer the Mrs and family love the thing.

Im weird, coz its new i think i can smell/taste some sort of plastic off the thing.

They do indeed use a fraction of the oil all the same.

I'm gonna do it, have seen a lot of cool things to do with one, I like fast, and if can get away from some oil.

Does anyone use avocado oil?

We got an air fryer. I have to say for the most part I am not impressed with it. For some things its great but I won't cook with it on most things. If I want something like fries or any oven baked replacement for fried food its fine. But when it comes to real cooking I will use other more proven means.

Even if you don't eat Canola oil, the shortage will still push other oils up. They're not going to stop selling fried food, they will just sub in other oils. I just got back from the Italian grocery store I go to for reasonably priced olive oil and I bought the last one and the shelf. They used to literally have an isle full of the stuff.

Anyway, the local Jewel grocery store (part of Albertsons), the last few weeks have been having insanely good sales on survival type food - tuna, bags of rice, canned veggies and dried potatoes all were 50 cents - two pound containers of peanuts were $2. And Amazon Fresh markets for the past six weeks had coupons out that basically took 50% off your total bill. I think the sales have to be planned at least a few months in advance, so the marketing department timed things correctly. (or another far out theory is they know something is coming and the sales were a way to help people prepare?)

Seeing as this thread has seemingly transformed from "massive shortages" into a discussion on cooking oil preferences... I see no one has mentioned coconut oil as a great alternative for cooking. Healthy and cheap!

And don’t use oil in air fryers.

It says so in the instructions.
