It seems that along with the Ukraine and Russia, we are in for a world of hurt with regards to Canola oil. But on the plus side Macdonalds should be priced out of the market. This guy checks out stuff we should be bulk buying before the shortages get to be too tedious. But the Canola oil shortage was even a bit quick for him. Seems like the supermarkets are just making the isles look good until they cant.

Can people not simply just use normal vegetable oil at a pinch?

Then there is always lard.

When i was a wean that's all that went into the frying pan/chip pan(lard).

Your opinion, best olive oil for cooking? I like our local supermarket brand (Presidents Choice) for sautéing, roasting, marinades, etc., but it only comes in bottles. I've been trying to find the stuff in cans, but I have to special order it. Do you have a favourite?

My wee gran used to say the best Olive oil for cooking was the "extra virgin olive oil".

I use Riviera Ligure DOP from Liguria. It might be hard to get, however I have a local Italian shop that imports this along with a bunch of others. I would stick with the DOP/IGP marked brands as they meet higher standards for production. There's also some California olive oils that are extremely good, I would just stay away from big brands who don't state exact sourcing on the container.

This is a good list, anything on it is killer.

I don't think canola oil is going to be a problem when you have nothing to cook.

Last night I went shopping and was bowled over to see a four pound package of chicken wings at $25.00.

I had a fast flashback of when I was in University and lived off Oodles of noodles, 10 packs for a dollar, chicken wings, five pounds for a dollar, and pork and beans, ten cans for a dollar.

I don't know how they expect children today to make it. I can say that I will not be making chicken wing meals at these prices.

I don't eat a lot of meat, but I might have to add a bit more to my diet, as fruits and vegetables are more expensive than meat in some areas.

Aside from of course people, dont even need the oil at a push.

Aye i done the Ramen noodle experience myself back in my university days NightSkyeB4Dawn, about 13p a packet back in the day. LoL

Fruits and vegetables are indeed extortionate in this day of age, which is why a garden plot is a good idea for most if they have the space.

That's is the first thing I thought of, yuck canola oil. I know what they mean though.
What I find weird is that a lot of people use oil to cook things that are already greasy and need no oil....

One of the best gifts I ever received was an air fryer, which drove that lesson home very quickly.

Most foods really only need a very small amount of oil, depending on how you cook them. If you are deep frying, of course, that is a different story.

YES! Also natural oils, animal fat, or butter works best for me.

We've been lied too for a long time saying these things were bad for us. We are finally being told the truth,
oil and sugar are bad for us. Meat and fat are not!

"We are finally being told the truth, oil and sugar are bad for us.

Didn´t you notice that this "facts"switch every, idk, 15-20 years?
Because then nobody is afraid enough anymore and doesn´t buy "fat/meat free" or "sugar free and oil free" (depends what was made "hip" at that time by the industry) anymore. So if the numbers of people buying fat free and meat free go down to where the industry doesn´t make enough profit anymore from that stuff, suddenly you will be told that sugar and oil is the devil now again for your health and that you only keep fit and alive if you just buy there new products which are sugar and oil free.

The reality is: You can eat whatever you want, meat, fat, oil, sugar. But not too much of anything, because that is the problem; Devouring masses of food, way too often (because it´s always there, it "grows" in the supermarkets and discounters...), instead of eating only the average portions with all the nutrients a human body needs.

I have learned that, as well as why you should eat things in season and locally, over exotics.

I didn't realize the answer to my seasonal allergies, until I started eating the majority of my diet from my Brother's garden and eating only his honey. It only took about six months, when I was able to give up my daily Claritan. It has been about three years now since I have had a problem with my seasonal allergies.

I was not surprised when I came across an article that extolled the benefits of local honey. I can say it worked for me.

Just watched a great show on indigenous people trying to go back to their roots especially when it comes to foods.
Many of their children have diabetes, at a much higher rate than other populations.
Those that ate locally/seasonally (buffalo meat/corn etc) did not have those issues.

Are we really built to have pineapple in the middle of winter?

Canola was pushed at one time as being the 'healthy alternative' to other cooking oils.
I remember trying it, and I never bought it again. I can't stand the taste of things cooked in it.
Now it turns out that it isn't good for the human organism.
Just like when I was a kid, they pushed margarine over butter.

Is that a joke? If you ask the people that make olive oil, "extra virgin olive oil" is a waste product.

It is the first part of the first press. It is the part that cleans the machinery out. They use it as a lubricant or burn it. Someone figured out that sticking a label on it to fool the foreigners would let them sell it for export.

Most cooking oils are overused. Most could do with a lot less than they use now. That being said, going out and buying it up just leads to a bigger shortage. That leads to higher prices and that is exactly what they want.
