Putin's actions / speech are probably not about Biden etc, but I fear the USA government's response will be.

That's a noble hope but I fear the response will be more confrontational than that , more threats of sanctions to follow.

I can live with sanctions. I just hope they don't start offering up our troops or tax dollars.

Much of the speech was about NATO and America's (before Biden) actions since the fall of the USSR , the move East and the interference and placement of weapons in the former Soviet states , he also used the weapons of mass destruction excuse in regard to Ukraine and their ability to regain them.

What has been happening to the East Ukrainians since the 2014 globalist coup/civil war (Soros style color revolution) is absolutely criminal. They catch agents trying to blow up a pipeline, making aggressive moves and now it appears that Russia is looking to step in, honestly surprised it has taken this long.

The EU will impose sanctions on Russia recognised two breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine as independent.

In a statement, Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, and Charles Michel, president of the European Council, condemned "in the strongest possible terms" Mr Putin's decision.

The statement said: "President von der Leyen and President Michel condemn in the strongest possible terms the decision by the Russian President to proceed with the recognition of the non-government controlled areas of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine as independent entities.

"This step is a blatant violation of international law as well as of the Minsk agreements.

"The Union will react with sanctions against those involved in this illegal act.

"The Union reiterates its unwavering support to Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders."

With all the Russian troops/equipment kept in Belarus after the ‘war games’.
Plus the huge number of troops/equipment moved into the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea in 2015.

It is now home to Russia's Baltic Sea Fleet, as well as the Chernyakhovsk and Donskoye air bases, with thousands of Russian troops stationed there.

I said this before in another thread and I still think its right; Putin's primary driver here is his own ego.
Putin has been in power now for some time, well over 20 years now.
He's stopped Russia's slide and overseen a sort of resurgence in Russian national pride.
But he's not a truly GREAT leader.
He can't be compared to the likes of Lenin, Stalin, Gorbachev and even Brezhnev, great things occurred when they were in power.

Putin wants some sort of legacy, something that will put him alongside those 'greats'.
Regaining land lost after the collapse of the old Soviet Union will go some way to him getting that legacy.

NATO assured Russia that they had no plan to encroach into the old Soviet nations, but they have.
Putin has also played on 'national pride' and stirred up ethnic Russian sentiments.

'The West' is lacking a strong leader at present - and has done for quite some time now.

What better time for Putin to try to achieve his dream and assure his place in Russian history.

Unlike Hitler, Putin has no desire to march across Europe and impose his ideology upon everyone and anyone.
He just has dreams of recapturing what he believes was Russia's former glory and being remembered and revered for doing so.

I don't think 'we' have anyone of the stature to stand up and oppose that.
I don't even think there is the desire to do so.....
