Interesting…when I was in lab school we learned to remember AST (aspartate aminotransferace) as “all systems test” because it is easily elevated when various organs stop functioning properly or are compromised and ALT (alanine transaminase) as “a liver test” because it is very indicative of chronic or acute liver failure… so that we could more easily understand the meanings behind various lab values. Which it always stuck with me…and part of our liver/hepatic panel is ALT, AST, and ALP
The past few months I’ve seen some patient results for these values well above normal, into the thousands (our normal range for each is roughly 5-40)
I’ve simply attributed these to patients that must be hepatitis patients and what not because that was typically the trend.
I’ve honed in on our elevated ferritin and d-dimer levels being thru the roof on Covid patients but your post has me wanting to keep a better eye on the correlations with the liver enzymes as well!
