I said eons ago that the answer will be carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (used to treat altitude sickness).

Guess what one of the trial treatments is now?

Carbonic anhydrase is essential in the initiation of taste and smell.

Altitude sickness causes a range of symptoms - the obvious like confusion, shortness of breath, etc.

But also eye pain (glaucoma), dry persistent cough, etc, etc, etc.

It's (IMHO) causing a reaction in the body where there is too much carbonic acid (CO2 combined with water) which releases more of the carbonic anhydrase emzymes (which break down carbonic acid (H2CO3) into H2O & CO2 in the lungs).

Ventilators pump more of the 17 times more than normal CO2 back into the blood, which creates more carbonic acid, which releases more anhydrases, which produces more CO2 in the lungs, which are then pumped back into the blood, creating even more Carb acid, etc, etc in a positive feedback loop that creates a death spiral.

Carboic anhydrase inhibitors break this cycle by forcing the carbonic acid out through your urine, and the more acidic blood tricks your body into believing there's more CO2 in your blood so your breathing changes to shorter shallower breaths to force more O2 into your blood.

Standard treatment for altitude sickness, acute mountain sickness - same symptoms, same cause, same treatment.

That's what the experts are now trialling.

When you look at the daily average, since this is still a developing situation, it is second only to Heart Disease and Cancer, and those are not contagious like Covid-19.

Sad day

Yes, it is sad. Just under 3 weeks ago, on April 3rd, it was at 6,469 total deaths in the U.S., or 215 average daily deaths. On the bright side (if there is one), it appears we are reaching, or have reached a peak, unless we as a nation do not exercise proper distancing for a few more weeks, in which case this would only be a resting point before going even higher. As a consolidated nation, will we decide our future.

Just to note since I’ve seen his briefings live mostly including last night, he said he had not looked at or been briefed on the recent two studies that have been referenced in this thread.

Also, subjective report from Manhattan East by Weil Cornell Hospital - ambulance traffic is way down this week to my ears. Hope all are well on this thread.

Good luck with him or his party winning the next election with the debacle that has been our government's response to Covid 19 thus far.

Considering the people who are most susceptible equate to the greater part of the Tory voter base aka the old and elderly.

People are apt to remember whos fault it was their granny or grandpa died alone in a care home or hospital, when the situation could have been prevented, or at least the circumstances and spread of the pathogen severely mitigated by simply acting sooner or at least providing our medical services with the proper equipment and PPE.

This has come as a shock to the general public - and I don't think it's sustainable to be honest.

UK will need social distancing until at least end of year, says Whitty
Government’s chief medical officer says return to normal in short term is ‘wholly unrealistic’

Social distancing will be needed until at least the end of the year to prevent fresh outbreaks of coronavirus even though the UK has reached the peak of the current epidemic, the government’s chief medical officer has said.

Prof Chris Whitty, the UK’s most senior medic, said it was important to be realistic that “highly disruptive” social distancing would need to be in place for “really quite a long period of time”.

He said there was only an “incredibly small” chance of a vaccine or treatments being ready for use this year, and social distancing would have to stay in place to suppress outbreaks until then.

His stark assessment dampened hopes that the lockdown would be largely removed when it is reviewed in just over a fortnight.

Goes on to say

“In the long run, the exit from this is going to be one of two things, ideally,” he said. “A vaccine, and there are a variety of ways they can be deployed ... or, and/or, highly effective drugs so that people stop dying of this disease even if they catch it, or which can prevent this disease in vulnerable people.

“Until we have those – and the probability of having those any time in the next calendar year are incredibly small, and I think we should be realistic about that – we’re going to have to rely on other social measures, which of course are very socially disruptive as everyone is finding at the moment.

“But until that point, that is what we will have to do but it will be the best combination that maximises the outlooks but it’s going to take a long time and I think we need to be aware of that.”

They are saying that we may need to do this for a LONG time

From Guardian Article : " UK government accused of cover-up over EU scheme to buy PPE "

Ministers are being pressed to reveal the full details of how the government missed out on four opportunities to join an EU medical supplies consortium, in the wake of a U-turn by the top civil servant in the Foreign Office over comments suggesting it was a “political decision”.

The Labour MP Chris Bryant, who sits on the foreign affairs select committee, said on Wednesday that he “feared the government was involved in a full-on cover-up” over how it came to miss out on four rounds of procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilators and laboratory supplies launched by the EU in late February and March.

It's not going to go anywhere fast.
The uptake curve is pretty steep, but the down curve is very, very slow.
China has shown it can be done with very drastic measures, but even they have trouble 'opening up' again afterwards.
Masks should be mandatory all over by now, to prevent spreading it to others, the Asian countries have known this for years.
The only reason it isn't implemented in Europe and elsewhere, is that they don't have the production capabilities to have 'proper' masks provided, without taking away from the front-line workers.

Any type of mask at the moment, would be better than nothing, if we have to get back to work, which we do.
There should be official guides on how to fabricate your own, washable mask, and what to make it out of.
Also, what NOT to make it out of.
Some industrial filters (Furnace and air-con, and others) have Fibreglass, and you shouldn't really be putting that up close to your face, unless you want to go to hospital.

France has banned all purchase/sale of official masks, so I don't know whats holding them back from indicating that people can make their own, and use them.

I think most of our countries are waiting to see what others do, and what effects it has on them, and their economies.
Open too early, and re-start the spread.
open too late, and there is not much to reopen.

They don't want to take the bloody decisions, but that is what they are paid to do.

Hey, I’ve been shouting that since February, i even drafted up a version that’s probanly nearer the truth than their re-writing of history that’s underway:
www.abovetopsecret.com...
I cna’t believe anyone voted for Bojo the first time, but walked it thanks to Brexit fatigue. And now his opinions polls are through the roof. So although it seems implausible he’d win next time, after this fiasco, I wouldn’t bet against it. Between the gullible masses and his (and Cummings’) dark arts we could be under their cosh for many years to come.

Politics in this nation, just like the NHS, are broken by design.

The politicians are all full of nothing but piss and wind, out to do nothing more than line there own pockets at the expense of the very same people who they are supposed to represent.

End of the day we live in a totalitarian technocracy of our own making.

Seems that Turkeys do vote for Christmas after all.

All "they" had to do is scream Brexit very loud and go on about immigration to sway the masses.

Now, who is it they are flying in by the planeload, as far as I'm aware, unchecked and untested, at either end, to pick our fruit from the fields?

That would be the Romanians.

Anyhoo i somewhat digress from the premise of the thread.

Well, vaccine or built up immunity, if you don't get too sick.
Have to hope for the best.
If those two chips get taken off the table, we're a bit fecked for a very long time.

Hell of a game of spin the bottle to be playing all the same.

And it's not so much the chips on the table to be worried about but access to a respirator if needed.

Do you know they are actually refusing to take the old folks dying of Covid in the care homes to the hospitals now!

How's that for national insurance?

The DWP will be down on the pension payments next year, that's a given.

Not wanting to be too down, but no one is going to want to go to a care home any more.
Those that are there now, have no choice but to live with it, and maybe even die with it.

Most of the people in care homes are paying 3-4 grand a month to have that 'priviledge'.
Not for much longer, i suspect.

As for pensions, how many had their money in the stock markets ?
yay. Count on it even less now.

The future is looking pretty bleak right now.

As for a respirator, will have to bite that bullet if and when the time comes.
'Are you feeling lucky, punk?'

I hope so.
