New York (CNN Business)The coronavirus outbreak has plunged the world's economy into a global recession, according to S&P Global.

The credit-rating agency, which determines the credit worthiness of governments and companies around the globe, said Tuesday that the virus has severely disrupted economic activity -- far more severe than previous estimates. It said the damage to economic activity is about to get worse in United States and Europe.

Manila.

first day of enhanced community quarantine. seems there was a lot of confusion about just when it started. some media put out that it started yesterday night at midnight, some thought it started today at noon, while others thought it stared tonight at midnight. hint don't use midnight or noon as a start time for these things. some people seem to think (i guess since the clock says 12:??) that until 1 am, it is still the night before. others and this is a situation i have seen actually rather often, is that people again likely to do with the "12" thing. and think 12am is noon, and 12pm is midnight.

so when i went out this morning, there were all sorts of tricys running, and i even saw a taxi. even t he car wash next door was in operation. so upon hearing the tricys were running my friend went out to the market to pick up vegetables, and a bit more meat. she was there before noon and they had announcements "reminding everyone" that the new rules, such as no public transportation was starting at "noon". and lets be honest, this whole no public transit at all thing is an issue. the market which is the closest to us is not really walking distance, i think it's about 2 km or so. especially if you are carrying vegetables and fruits, or something like a 25 or 50 kilo bag of rice (which are pretty normal amounts for people to buy). the closest variety store is almost 1 km away, i walk there all the time. now they are building a 7-11 just around the corner from me. but still not open after almost a year. all it's needed for months is the shelves to be stocked. and the closest sari sari to me is not really much closer since the bust yard moved out and they started to build the condo that is there now, and the sari sari and small sari sari type restaurants closed down. as my small area is going through a bit of gentrification. so not having transit will make buying food difficult, for us and anyone else in my area that doesn't have a car or motorcycle (since of course under the rules a friendly neighbour is not even allowed to give you a ride).

many shelves at the variety store were getting empty. but the also had new stock that has come in, waiting to be put away. still no rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. on the way back i stopped in at the bakery supply store to pick up a couple things we needed. man have they changed the way they do business. instead of going in like normal, they set up tables at the front and you submit your order. then since they have not yet at least moved their registers, a person hand calculates and writes up a receipt for the transaction. and this supply store, which is normally quite busy was dead. i was the only one there, when i was there. but hopefully they do enough business to stay open since we do buy a lot of food products there, especially butter, best butter and best prices for it in the area. as well as good quality and decent prices for sugar, flour and other baking ingredients.

from what i am seeing on facebook from friends, everyone is desperately bored out of their minds. and this is only day one of at least a month of this. technically a can't even walk my dog, and so even she is depressed, since her walk is her highlight of the day.

There's still no treatment for the virus. It will come back with a vengeance as soon as china opens everything back up. There was really no point to what they did.

Actually, there are two or three that are promising - remdesivir and Chloroquine are two I recall off-hand, but...

NOTE - I am not recommending anyone try vitamins via IV outside of a hospital, and I also want to point out that oral application of Vitamin C has also been shown to be effective as well (I'm up to about 25grams per day of oral C, almost past the loose bowel stage) - see below for a link to an NIH study backing up this claim.

there may be good news on the horizon...

China is engaged in a formal trial of high-dose IV Vitamin C, using 140 participants. They are only using the lowest recommended dose (24gram per day) that has anecdotally been shown to be very effective against both viral and bacterial infections and specifically with regard to flu/pneumonia and other things like this, but it should (will) still show efficacy. Once it does, hopefully they'll expand the study to a lot more people, using the higher doses (up to 100grams per day, which is where this stuff really shines) - and I really wish our own government would be so proactive.

It is cheap, can be administered by any/all medically trained people who can do IVs (nurses, EMTs, Doctors, etc), and could even be done in a drive-thru type setting - drive up, roll down your window, turn off your car and stick out your arm and get comfortable for the hour or so treatment, then drive off.

This could change the world, because it works on flu/pneumonia and all kinds of viral and bacterial pathogens.

Think I'm talking out of my backside?

The NIH has acknowledged Vitamin C has serious antiviral and antibacterial properties:

Two Excerpts...

From the Abstract:
"Two controlled trials found a statistically significant dose–response, for the duration of common cold symptoms, with up to 6–8 g/day of vitamin C. Thus, the negative findings of some therapeutic common cold studies might be explained by the low doses of 3–4 g/day of vitamin C. Three controlled trials found that vitamin C prevented pneumonia. Two controlled trials found a treatment benefit of vitamin C for pneumonia patients. One controlled trial reported treatment benefits for tetanus patients. The effects of vitamin C against infections should be investigated further."

And from the Conclusions (scroll way down):

"From a large series of animal studies we may conclude that vitamin C plays a role in preventing, shortening, and alleviating diverse infections. It seems evident that vitamin C has similar effects in humans. Controlled studies have shown that vitamin C shortens and alleviates the common cold and prevents colds under specific conditions and in restricted population subgroups. Five controlled trials found significant effects of vitamin C against pneumonia. There is some evidence that vitamin C may also have effects on other infections, but there is a paucity of such data. The practical importance and optimally efficacious doses of vitamin C for preventing and treating infections are unknown. Vitamin C is safe and costs only pennies per gram, and therefore even modest effects may be worth exploiting."

Fyi: these studies - even the ones showing great promise - were all based on oral ingestion, and all use comparatively low doses. Studies that showed no or low activity used extremely low doses (half a gram and less).

But high dose IV Vitamin C has been anecdotally shown to be dramatically more effective because it can use much higher doses with no loose bowel side effects, and I believe it is criminal that this hasn't been pursued.

The therapeutic dose, as determined by the last 25+ years of usage with zero safety concerns, starts at 25 grams (lowest/starting dose), and goes up to 100 grams (max) per treatment/IV session.

To learn more about a specific case of its use, watch this Australian 60 Minutes documentary about Aussie farmer Alan Smith's 'miraculous' 'deaths door' recovery from Swine Flu complications:

Part I

Part II

Then read more about it here:

From the arrogant reactions of some in the medical community - this doctor in Part II is a classic example - they seem to actually be very afraid of the ramifications of high dose Vitamin C being as effective - as life-saving - as it appears to be (and I believe it is). It is extremely safe, and cheap, so, to test it, all they have to do is - try it. Use it, and let the results speak for themselves. Yet they fight tooth and nail against it.

WHY???

Human life > economy

You’re silly.

What is silly is refusing to acknowledge that we could save more lives by doing it my way - without destroying the economy.

What is silly is believing that simply stopping the spread of a virus temporarily will result in a permanent stoppage.

As soon as you end the quarantines, it just starts all over again.

This is the circular flow of income diagram. The red X's represent where Covid19 is disrupting the flow of money.
I'm posting this again, because absolutely no one responded to my post the other day.

THIS is the situation. The flow of money has and is grinding to a halt. It's like the engine crashing into a wall, and all the carriages piling into the back of it.

I could say much more, but I just advise folks to look out the window at the carnage going on many carriages ahead (see DOW futures) The comments there should open your eyes.
To ignore what is happening up ahead means you're still sitting looking at the trees going past from the rear carriages, blissfully unaware of what is happening up ahead. This isn't doom and gloom, it is just what is happening. Look at that diagram at the top. We are in this because of supply train and this accident waiting to happen has been going on for a long time.

Let’s pretend the economy and health care system that America has is still there after all is said and done .

How is your beloved economy going to even function when millions of Americans have a newly acquired trillion dollar medical debt.

Will be hard for Americans to pay mortgages and bills with a lifetime of medical debt .

Absolutely. So once again, this whole thing favours the rich. The rich can stock pile, quarantine and play it safe..

In SA we have taxi cabs which take 15-20 passengers in a minibus that should take 12. That is how the majority of this population get around.. 1 case could mean a whole lot more infections for us in Africa.. None of those people can afford testing or hospitalisation

Just imagine all the people being put into icu on ventilators around the world. If you charge these people the prices of 2019 for their medical care, that is enough to destroy any world economy.

Stay safe out there man. Your family are your only friends now !

No one is safe.

What use is being hospitalised when there is no cure.

Once the numbers hit a point where 10% are greater than the ICU beds available then everyone in that group die.

That will be within the month, if not within a fortnight.

People on ventilators need to be on them for weeksand months, there is not enough exygen to sustain that.

So 10% at least of everyone who get this will die.

That's going to be millions.

Doesn't matter how much food or gold you have, or ho many people died in Africa of anything in the past.

It is not relevant and has no bearing on this.

Everything favours the rich...

That is why you save just a little bit of whatever you earn for a rainy day.

Even the not rich can do that...

Funnily enough... those that do that find themselves "rich" before too long, and able to prepare for the future.
