India on lockdown

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a “total lockdown” in the country of 1.3 billion people during a televised address Tuesday night, the most extensive stay-at-home order yet in the world’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The 21-day lockdown was set to begin at midnight.

Thanks guys. I class all of us as the UK to be honest. I don't look at the seperate areas. We're all on the same island.
I best leave the updates to other people so as not to confuse anyone.

I haven't said thank you to EVERYONE on all these threads yet, but will do now as we are all playing our part in keeping others updated. Keep it up.

This thread has quietened significantly. I've got to assume, and is the same for me, the reality has already hit, and now we've just got to stay bunkered and deal with it. My input will probably be minimal from here.
So just want to say thanks to everyone for all info and updates. Wishing you all well, and hope for the future.

We've just crossed the 400,000 cases mark, and it continues. So just take as many precautions as you can within your circumstances, stay strong. Much love to everyone.

Needless to say, The thread seems to work in waves. When there’s nothing new or exciting to report or it’s a weekend, this thread slows down. When something major happens, hold on to your horses, it takes me hours to sift through all the posts I missed. Looking for nuggets of good info. Edit:the airlines are tanking. www.marketwatch.com...

'Street talk' here in the US via social media today is that people think the US has found a cure and that is why Trump is saying the country will reopen at the end of the two week period on April 2nd. The general belief seems to be that the government is currently testing this cure and doesn't want to announce that the have found a cure until it has been tested on enough people. A LOT of people are saying this is what they believe is going on behind the scenes for Trump to be planning to lift restrictions.

For the record I don't believe this myself, I'm just reporting that a lot of other people do apparently.

Just wanted to add a poignant song to this thoughtfully concluded thread, which seems to have come to an end by mutual agreement.

Godspeed folks.

This seems low compared to other countries. Are they correct?

* Never mind my question, I got the answer further down the line.

That is the first I have heard that one.

Apparently the people that believe that, have never dealt with the medical system too much. LOL They make snails look like race horses.

Details of India's recently announced National Lockdown, from the BBC Live Feed at 16.33pm :

Indian PM Narendra Modi has just announced the most wide-ranging lockdown the world has seen yet - with some 1.3 billion people affected.

Here are the key points of his address:

- The lockdown will be "absolute" and in force for 21 days
- No citizen will be allowed to leave their homes during this period
- It will come into force from midnight local time tonight
- Mr Modi said it was the only way to break the cycle of the virus and that if the country could not manage the next 21 days, it would be set back by 21 years
- He also announced a fund of nearly $2bn (£1.7bn) towards health infrastructure in combating the coronavirus
- He called on people not to spread rumours and to follow instructions
- He said he was confident India would emerge from the crisis "successfully"

I will back up this statement. I’ve been hearing the same speculation. I personally think it is the malaria drug he’s banking on. He just sent it to NY. If it is something else he is doing a hell of a job keeping it secret from his own health advisors. Hospitals are getting strained . One hospital I know , I’m sure there are others, are turning away visitors. One woman whose husband needed emergency surgery for an aneurism wanted to wait for him and even go later after the last surgery and she was denied even that.

Worldometers adds that calculation for whatever reason but it's not the way the WHO or virologists calculate the CFR. Go to this link and they calculate it for you. It's number of deaths divided by number of cases. It's not a perfect method but it works if you use the same math for every country to at least give an estimated idea.

Correct, and it helps if you look at from the standpoint of showing a trend.

You can get a much better idea by also looking at the details for unresolved cases.

For example, in the USA:

49,594 total cases, 622 deaths, gives 1.25% CFR.

Then look at the numbers for the unresolved... hey, wtf??? Those numbers are no longer showing up.

Hmmm.. and there is this disclaimer at the top:

"We are working with State and local officials to constantly improve the accuracy and timeliness of the data. Please bear with us while we fine-tune the process."

I guess they decided to stop providing those until they 'tune' the process - or maybe tptb didn't like the fact that they were shopwing that, at least for the USA, 95-99% of all unresolved cases were mild (not requiring hospitalization).

I've been watching those numbers for many weeks, so the fact that they are gone is ... curious.

I expect the CFR to come down eventually. Don't like how the unresolved (open) cases are treated as resolved though. Doesn't make sense to me. It's either resolved and done with or not.

Who said they were being treated as resolved? They weren't.

There should be a way to modify the simple 'Deaths/Cases' formula to include the number or maybe percentage - of unresolved that are mild, but I wouldn't have a clue how to do that.
