Italy will be at 17k cases today I bet.
Good job they're in lockdown but unfortunately many from there spread it about to other Country's!
First confirmed case on Driver of London Underground Tube today aswell... that means many tube passengers will have this by now. Get ready for a burst in confirmed cases in London.

unless things are really different there, the driver of a subway really has no contact with passengers. every light rail transit system i have even been in, the driver is closed up away from passengers in their own cab. the only exception to this is transit systems like the TTC in Toronto where there is a guard position, where for some stops they leave the cab to go to the other side to open a window to do their duty. so even in that case contact with them is limited to pretty much one or two seats (since of course they keep the seat in the spot they use folded up so they can go there at the needed stops.

They're not really worried, it's the economic and health system overload they're worried about. Quite a few prominent workers are dropping out of the research because of families. We have researchers from China dropping because they're worried about being labeled. Some have dropped out because of a chronic condition. It is strictly voluntary to work on.

They were surprised by the speed, I think everyone was. I don't think they know aside from coastal to hubs to Central US, we're such a diverse nation. They do joke about the media and it being here to stay. There's no way to fully stop it but slowing it can help the health systems manage and maybe limit the economic hit. They're not worried about getting sick just worried about being locked up for 14 days because they're being monitored by employee health programs. I will ask them specific questions next week after their meetings and updates, one thing brought up was our reliance on truck shipping and how much we move increasing spread.

The goal is to get treatment options for vulnerable population groups and maybe find a nice vaccine or antibody target that can be rapidly deployed.

Just in from the Tokyo Embassy:
Location: Japan

Event: There is an ongoing outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) first identified in Wuhan, China. The global public health threat posed by COVID-19 is high, with more than 110,000 reported cases worldwide.

The Government of Japanhas implemented enhanced screening and quarantine measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Travelers should be prepared for travel restrictions to be put into effect with little or no advance notice. Visit the website of the Japan National Tourism Organization for additional information on these new measures.

CDC has issued a Level 2 Travel Notice for Japan.

U.S. government personnel have been advised to review their readiness for any emergency. As we have consistently recommended due to frequent weather-related emergencies in Japan, personnel are reminded to have “go-bags” for themselves and family members, containing ample prescription medication(s), Japanese cash, mobile phone chargers, and copies of any vital documents. Personnel are also advised to consider supplementing their emergency food and prescription medications to cover a period of at least 14 days without resupply. Staff are encouraged to maintain an emergency supply of potable water for at least three days.

Feeling a sense of rising panic a little here in the UK, despite following this from the beginning there is a reality sinking it and it's not nice!
Hearing from friends in London that there are no supermarket deliveries in their area for weeks and food supply is very low now especially dried foods, tins, pasta. Also heard Ocado now leave bags on the doorstep and won't enter the house and refusing to take back plastic bags.

@musicismagic have you heard more on this?

There was footage in China of people coughing on lift buttons and stuff like that ages ago, I can't believe people do this!

If you see anything on it with ammonia or ammonium don't use it. That site has some quaterinary ammonium compounds that don't work effectively and it has to do with the lipid bilayer, this came from our biosafety officers. We switched to bleach/chlorine dioxide and peroxide.

Not worried just uneasy, people get weird in these situations, they can't process stress and abnormalities. I am worried about older relatives, thankful kids brush it off, concerned about the economic hit. My state says if you have symptoms stay home and assume you have the virus. It's abnormally quiet, the roads are quiet and I'm glad we stocked up weeks ago. Now the schools are closing, all the fun stuff is closing and who knows what else is coming with people being bored or not having money because they don't have full time benefits.

Update from I-64 east of St louis. Traffic seemed a lot lighter today coming into work.

I almost feel if we are due for a calm day or two.

I have spoken about this a few times before on these update threads. There is a pattern to the chaos and calmness.

I feel like the market may ease a couple of fears for the short term and the news will be a little slow going into the weekend.

But I could also be way off here, so this is my opinion of course. Which I hope I am right because the doom is killing my anxiety.

We will see how this will play out today.

Is it weird that even as cases pop up around me I am more curious than worried now, I have some co-workers that were seriously worried while I was trying to figure out where the lunch lady came into contact with it south Georgia.

The driver was not even at work. He had been isolating at home after returning from holiday. Cant find the link, but it was somewhere on the BBC live feed.

Some posters just seem to like panicking/causing more worry!

I wasn't able to listen to the news all day, but if true, it should be on TV tomorrow with police reports. I'll check around now since my day is finished. I've been posting a bit about the mentally ill and Japan has its share and they are free to do as they please. I can see the Japanese govt. acting pretty fast on this case. Hope it isn't true. Stay tune.

American Airlines pilot tests positive:

www.nbcdfw.com...

They will not tell us where he flew, which is ridiculous. We also have 3 more positive cases in Dallas and they have declared emergency in Dallas county.

***I have a small pet sitting business. This virus has effectively ruined it.

ETA: Dallas cases now at 5, and the Frisco man that tested positive also infected his wife and 3 year old. He has a child in school that just happens to be in my neighborhood. I can walk to this school. This is just crazy...

Well, again from a different angle, I believe the opposite would be true. This is showing people, IMHO, the folly of being interdependent with other countries. If China could have been just encapsulated early on, we would be in the mess we are right now. But countries either could not shut out China, or were afraid to, because so much of their economy depends on China and China's good will. Personally, I think once China shut down Wuhan, every other country on the planet should have shut down China completely and totally. China raised a huge red flag over this, and everyone just chose to ignore it. IMHO.

I absolutely agree, but I don't see why you think this is the opposite of what I said. It is another angle, yes, but it is completely unrelated.

Also - my post is just a pet theory. Yours is fact.

So with that in mind, I believe countries will see the benefits of returning to self sufficiency as much as is feasible. ...
Globalism is not the answer that PEOPLE need for their continued well being.

100% agree and have stated as much in this and other threads.

My hope is that this will be a wake up call to passing laws - yes, many will call them protectionist, and I agree, they are for our protection - requiring all manufacturing of mission critical components/items on US soil, and also requiring that any Company that sells into the US Markets must follow all US regulations and laws, including but not limited to EPA, FDA, Labor (ie minimum wage (which I'm totally against but...)) laws, etc.

Who knows? the idea of open borders might become bitter. Nationalism has been on the rise in lots of countries, perhaps this will solidfy that logic.

I sure hope so.

I've already told you this is the most contgeous and infectious disease ever seen.

Yes, you have - but that is just your opinion, with no basis in fact.

Merkel isn't joking when she says 70% of Germans will be infected (58 MILLION of them).

No she isn't joking, she is pulling things out of her rear end.

ETA: I have been trying very hard to not post OT stuff.

I am constantly accused of making repetitive posts debunking garbage posts like this.

Please go start your own doom-porn thread, so I don't have to try to keep myself from responding constantly to fear-mongering hyperventilating panic driven posts like this.

The knock on effect for business is crazy, I was focused on the effect of the healthcare system for a long while but have been discussing with friends how badly this will hurt so many businesses. Basically everyone.
Anyone that can't work from home, shops, events, bars, theatres, gyms - the list is endless. We just have to hope the governments can some how do something to stop the fallout from that - reduce/freeze tax, maybe some sort of compensation fund or something - but if/ when it affects us all I can't see how those sort of measures can save all businesses.
I keep wondering how long the lockdowns will go on for - someone on the BBC was talking about the timing of closing schools and said it has to be timed right as it would be for several months. I'm thinking more and more it could be that and longer. I'm not sure what would happen after that period of time - you can only prep for so long.
