I tend to agree; yes, it "could" have been pulled off. It wasn't, but it 'could' have been. The argument that too many people would have had to keep it secret is not a valid argument, never has been. Here are several reasons why:

1. No technology available at the time could have ever determined, with 100% certainty, if we were actually ON the Moon or just very 'close' to the Moon.

2. Photographic and Television technology of the day was not sufficient to prove, with absolute certainty, the events weren't staged.

3. Objects and devices could have easily been placed on the Moon without man being there to do it. Case in point, the NASA Surveyor missions which preceded Apollo were all unmanned, and they placed a number of objects on the Moon remotely, even took pictures. The Russians did too. Interestingly, Apollo 12 even visited one of these sites which is the only rendezvous with another man made object on another planet.

4. Photographs, even from recent Lunar exploratory mission, could easily have been doctored to show virtually anything. Modern digital photographic systems are easily manipulated.

5. Even the biggest question of all; "WHY?" has some compelling reasons 'why' there would be the desire to try to deceive the public.

Were the Moon landings by Apollo faked? NO!

Could they have been faked? Absolutely!

You're unconvinced they went there , you can be even more unconvinced that they came back again , IF they got there .
Earth to moon is one thing , plenty of chances to get that wrong , but moon to earth is another entirely other mission , never before tried , requiring 'hitching back up with an orbiter' before 'blasting off' back to earth . What's easier to believe , that they pulled off this stunt , or that the people of earth are credulous and prone to government conspiracies .

There are in my opinion two possible answers to the question.

The intense rivalry between The U.S and The U.S.S.R. in those days, a fake moon landing would be one way of getting " One Over " The Russians, in making them think it really happened.

Funding. NASA successes would continue funding for other projects. Failure doesn't get rewarded.

Who said it wasn't tried? Every aspect of the mission had been done one way or another apart from the launch back to orbit and home, and the Russians did that with an unmanned probe. Unmanned probes orbited and landed before Apollo got there, Apollo 8 went and orbited, Apollo 10 went and tried undocking and redocking with the LM. All documented in full view of the public with verifiable imagery.

The flag moves because of moister and temperature variations...not because of an atmosphere.

It's not going to be from moisture variations - there isn't any moisture! Any movement is from vibration, actual contact and electrostatic charge. In some cases the movement is only apparent, not real, thanks to poor quality rendering.

look at how much the USSR recovred [ moon rock ] with unmanned missions

I would imagine there were enough Russian spies to know what was happening with the space mission. Russia would have let the world know of a faking.

Apollo 11 could have well been sent to The Moon.

Who was to say there was anyone actually onboard ?

So now the cold war was a fake and the US actually ran the USSR?

That's just getting stupid with conspiracy.

What happened is they committed to the Apollo program, got really invested in it, and then learned that there is intense radiation that would kill us all instantly if it were not for the earth's Van Allen belt, which shields us and all DNA-based life (all life).

"NASA" went to the moon; if by "went to the moon" you mean "sent robot vehicles remotely controlled from Houston" to the moon. They used what we today would call drones. So yeah, you can see where "the vehicles" touched down on the surface. you can see the trash still left up there by the Apollo missions.

But they found out, several hundred million dollars into the project, that no humans were ever leaving this rock alive. Not to the moon, not to mars. And if we are ever visited by extra terrestrial intelligence, it will be the robot drones which they had launched hundreds of thousands of years previously, into the radioactive void of space.

If people found out that we could NEVER go beyond low earth orbit, there goes all of that NASA funding.

Look at what we've done since Apollo.

Unmanned missions to venus, to mars.

The space shuttle, in low earth orbit.

The international space station, in low earth orbit.

Drone mission to the surface of a comet.

The human race is stuck here. America and the other other space agencies still want their research money, but the dream is dead. no "Lost in Space." No "Star Wars." No "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".

No Space Odyssey

It's kind of off-topic, but there is some pretty stunningly amazing things which happened during the Apollo missions which many don't understand. Bluechip hit on one of them; think the landing was amazing? Well, think about the return; that's even more amazing! And, there was no way to test that! Not on Earth anyway. Taking off from the Moon, establishing orbit and rendezvous with the CM was an one time shot the first time they did it.

The other thing which has always been amazing to me was the cojones it took to press that button for the TLI (Trans Lunar Injection) maneuver. It's a wonder a Saturn 5 rocket had enough power to boost the nards of the astronauts who did that into orbit at all.

Most people don't understand that once that maneuver was initiated the astronauts were either going to the Moon, or they were going on a REALLY LONG one-way trip! They would either be captured by the gravity of the Moon, or they would have shot by the Moon and went on a sight seeing mission of the solar system. The only way they could have ever returned was if they missed the sphere of influence of the Moon completely which was pretty unlikely. Even then, re-establishing a stable orbit for re-entry would have been nearly impossible.
